I wouldn’t say this ticket is meant for long distance travel. But it comes in very useful for regular German people who already have and use a monthly ticket for their region. Because now when they arrive in a different town or travel past regional borders. They won’t have to buy an extra ticket anymore.

As a tourist I will visit Germany starting from Hamburg in June. In addition to that I would like to see some cities like Berlin and Munich. Do you recommend this ticket to me?
@jjoou
@jjoou Жыл бұрын
@@kad1820 It really depends on what your intention for the ticket is. If you want to just have a metro/ bus ticket for when you’re in those towns and if you use a lot of public transportation within these cities for a longer time, maybe even visiting close by towns like Potsdam, then yes. But for traveling between Hamburg to Munich or Berlin I wouldn’t recommend it. For that I recommend buying ICE tickets several weeks in advance so they aren’t as expensive.
@Psi-Storm
@Psi-Storm Жыл бұрын
@@kad1820 Daily public transport tickets for the cities you visit are already around 10€ a day, so you basically get the 49€ ticket for free. The Hamburg-Berlin route is 4 hours with regional trains, so totally doable. If you want to go to the Baltic sea from Hamburg thats also an option. For Berlin-Munich and back to Hamburg i would book super saving tickets for the ice next month.
@Kni90270

@@kad1820 Just to remember: the (+) no need for local tickets inside the cities and beyond when travelling across the south and north. the (-) only usable for regional trains meaning it add extra time for your journey if you are travelling between cities.

You forgot one kind of transportation that can be used with the D-Ticket: ferries. When they are part of the public transport system, like in Hamburg or Berlin, they are included in the ticket. One of the ferries in Berlin - the F24 or Paule III - is a rowing boat with space for 8 passengers.

That's 100 % true, the famous Harbour Ferries in Hamburg for Example. Don't made a "expensive" Hafenrundfahrt, take the Harbour Ferries. Easy like taking a Bus. Every 10 Minutes from Landungsbrücken for Example....You can go to Finkenwerder for Examble, Airbus Factory. No German City have Ferries like Hamburg. It's like the famous Habour Ferries in New York...
@MausTheGerman

@@wolfgang6915 I did both in Hamburg last year in summer. The Harbour ferries with the 9 euro ticket but also the große Hafenrundfahrt. The Hafenrundfahrt is moderated and you get lots of infos and usually the Captain is super funny and also goes very close to the big vessels in the Harbour. It also goes through the small channels in the Speicherstadt with couple of nice photo stops. So I would still recommend the commercial Hafenrundfahrt for people who have never been to Hamburg 😊

In my case, it's even just 28 € because my company is one of the largest corporations in Germany, so they can make a better deal with the local transportation agency, plus they subsidise the job ticket through the rent car drivers pay at the company's garages. Before the D-Ticket, the job ticket cost me 40 € for the greater Cologne area (VRS), which was already a bargain compared to the official monthly ticket at 250 €, now I only pay 28 € for the whole of Germany - great!

As for any long haul journey, ICEs still remain dominant because of course you don't want to get ultra tired or break your body out of say 13-14 hrs journey but once you reach a region via the IC/ICE/EC, the 49euro D-ticket gives you the ultimate freedom ! My only wish is, the trains won't continuously be late or cancelled like last year's summer ! That thing is frustrating for sure. But, I am happy that I'd get to see more beautiful german villages.

Thing is, there's no way to really just increase capacities, trains can only be so long (for various reasons), you can't stock wagons higher than double decks, and even if there was all the personal available, there's only so much room on the tracks for a limited number of trains. We need more tracks? In Germany? Ja, that's being common sense for at least 3 decades now, the keyword here is "in Germany" though! ... Just to point it out: for tourists this ticket won't be as convinient as one may think. if you stay in a city, a 6 or 7 days pass may be cheaper than 49 euro (e.g. Berlin LGBT Pass - that anyone can buy in reality - is ~ 35 euros for 6 days and much less for 3 days). If you travel between cities, if you book in advance, you can get ICE train rides for euro 29... Doing Berlin to Frankfurt or Berlin to Munich by regional train is just a stupid way of wasting valuable tourist time. If you do a trip seeing two cities stayin 2-3 days in each, it will be more convinient therefore to get an ICE train ticket for the long distance and get more existing day passes for the two cities. In fact, from a turist POV, the D-Ticket seems very much to benefit Deutsche Bahn than the customer. And if you travel europe on an EUrail pass, it gets even worse since germany will be just one or stops of the trip and travelling between them will be covered by the EUrail pass already.
@Psi-Storm
@Psi-Storm Жыл бұрын
Daytickets for the inner cities are already 8-10 Euros. If you use just one regional train for a daytrip on the visit, the 49€ ticket is cheaper. For example Hamburg-Lübeck, Frankfurt the Rhine region, Munich to Berchtesgaden, or even Hamburg-Berlin which isn't that bad.
@patrickhanft
@patrickhanft Жыл бұрын
All true and still if you visit more than one city, paying for daily or weekly passes more than once or twice and needing to adjust to different borders of their respective Verkehrsverbünde might often be more expensive than a D-Ticket, it certainly will not be as convenient as the D-Ticket will be. I have been on an interrail trip to France and Spain for two weeks and I certainly paid more than 49€ for only public transport without regional trains in addition to my already existing interrail ticket (with which I used the regional trains of course) in six different cities. Something like the D-Ticket would have been great even with already having a valid rail ticket.

I was in Germany almost all summer 2022 and I have to say the 9€ ticket was a blessing, and yes, it incentivated tourism, I went to cities that weren't in my itinerary, just because I could travel there very cheap. Public transport in Germany is espectacular, but it was very expensive, my last 2 weeks without the 9€ ticket were pretty pricey, even buying the weekly ticket. That said, I am also aware of the lack of planning and logistic issues thare arose from this ticket, one time I was stranded in Köln for 90 minutes because there was no train conductor, and the last weekend of the summer, coming from Hamburg was pretty intense, also I'm aware that that's part of the reason the DB employees are protesting at this moment. But this is a good idea, specialy for Germany's energy transition, German citizens told me the public transport was good, but they'd rather use their car because it was cheaper. Now to solve the logistics issue of higher train demand, who knows? Maybe they'll hire me because they need more people haha.

I bet they called it "Deutschlandticket" this time because the original name 49€ Ticket would not allow later price raises. It's also very hard to get at least at the moment because the ticket counters seem to rebel against the incredible demand and just stop selling it. If they had just kept the concept of the 9€ ticket which could simply be bought at a ticket machine it would have been a piece of cake but with their contract idea and forcing people to use digital solutions which they dont want and all it's kinda getting messy.

About the subscription, let’s say I arrive at Germany on May 20, if I get the D-ticket by that day will I need to buy it again the 1st of June or the 20th?

It's a subscription. So unless you cancel - you'll be charged automatically on the 1st.

When the 9€ Ticket launched a friend of mine from croatia, who at this time studied in vienna/austria, he used it with a friend to travel through germany :) because he has never been there before. From there he travelled to Bavaria`s capital Munich, german`s oldest town Trier/Rhineland-Palatine (with a short day trip to the world`s richest country Luxembourg bc their transport system is totally free) and the carnival stronghold Cologne/Northrhine-Westphalia. There he sadly got sick bc of the corona virus....further planned trips of him were headed to germany`s biggest hanseatic city Hamburg, germany`s capital and government seat Berlin and to the florence of the Elbe Dresden/Saxony. He really used it :D but I used it greatly as well. With the ticket it was my first time going to Konstanz/Baden-Wuerttemberg, a beautiful middle city on the Lake Constance and the swiss border, Baden-wuerttembergs beautiful and rich capital Stuttgart and the beautiful city at the baltic sea in the real north Lübeck/Schleswig-Holstein :) (A friend of mine and me compared the last visit with trips to Hamburg and Schwerin (The small eastern-northern capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with its beautiful and pompous castle). So I can really suggest to use it to get out of your comfort zone and visit all the beautiful sights and cities of Germany! I was able to discover more of the north and I also want to discover more of the east of Germany :) I`m definitely planning trips to cities such as Dresden and Leipzig/Saxony, Potsdam/Brandenburg (for the famous Babelsberg film studious), Halle and Magdeburg/Saxony-Anhalt and Rostock/Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania! PS. I`m from western germany, strictly speaking from the Ruhr area, near Dortmund. And around 2 years ago I moved to Heidelberg to study their. It`s a lovely city in the north of Baden-Wuerttemberg, well known for its university (which is the oldest of germany), its oldtown, as well as its beautiful castle on the hill. This is something I also can highly recommend to visit one time.

Can some one please tell me how to activate the ticket on the DB website or APP? I opened an account at DB, purchased the d-ticket, selected the trip I want being sure that they are not ICE (I used the filters), but then there is no option to add the d-ticket, just paying as usual. Does anyone know how to use it, to get the benefit to get the discount applied?

D-Ticket does cover all regional trains. Thus no extra ticket / surcharge needed. D-Ticket is valid for one (or more - it is a subscription) calendar month. No further validation needed.
