On May 1st around 3:30pm President Obama received a message from a Navy SEAL saying "Geronimo- E KIA" the code meaning Osama bin Laden is dead. We humbly disagree.
Geronimo was a product of his environment. A human. One with flaws. One with enough history that the person charged with defining who he is can shape the narrative any which way he likes. People chase him today, just as they did then. His story, or peoples versions of it, lead us to this point where we are today. But this poem isn't about Geronimo is it?

He is Mr. Atkinson in Oklahoma, who authored Resurrection After Rape, who gives voices to survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and abuse. A teacher, friend, social worker, therapist...that let us sweat with him, in a sweat lodge he built from the earth with his hands, our tribe of survivors, as our tears fell on those hot Grandfather Stones last May. He is Geronimo. Namasté.

What I understood was a people reclaiming their heritage and their identity by not letting others dictate who they were, who they are, and what they will be. It is in regaining the narrative of one's own history that allows knowledge to foster into self-empowerment and freedom. A'ho

I gave water to my fellow Marines when it was hot, gave them the last bit of food I had when they were hungry, stood watch when they were sleeping, motivated then during toughest time, I let it be known that I would put my own life down for them, and I would do it all over again if I had too. I'm a US Marine from Copper Mine Az Navajo Nation and I AM GERONIMO

Are you kidding me? Geronimo was a savage murderer. He bragged about killing 500 or 600 Mexicans. He had no remorse about killing entire families. Natives complain about Italians celebrating Columbus but think that Geronimo is some type of hero. Disgusting.

It would be so cool if this great video could be set up like "It Gets Better" where other tribal people can add their piece -- so many stories, so many warriors. Thank you. I hope the president and his staff and everybody working on that hill and in that white house who do not know these stories will see this. It would make them better leaders if they knew the people and the stories represented here -- the first peoples of this land.
