Gerunds look like verbs, sound like verbs, smell like verbs, but they're not verbs -- they're nouns! This lesson explains why that's important and how to use gerunds.

Thank you for a great lesson!. I noticed that the ING at the end of the gerunds were clearly pronounced, is it different then pronouncing the ING in a verb? Like swimming in a gerund the ing sound is clear, but in a regular verb we hear Swimmen .

Great video, as always. Talking of linking, maybe you could say a few words on the final consonant of a word linking with the initial vowel of the following word? As in, "cut it" is pronounced as one word but with the syllable boundary between "u" and "t", not "t" and "i." At least that's how I perceive it. So it sounds like /kʌ.tɪt/, where the dot indicates the syllable boundary. Or "take it" is pronounced /teɪ.kɪt/. In other words, "touch it" is not pronounced /tʌtʃ (very short pause/syllable boundary) ɪt/ but /tʌ (v. shot pause) tʃɪt/.

Very good but my criticism is with Prepositions used in the lesson. Surely it is AT the weekend ( timing 0.45) not on the weekend? It can be ON Sunday or ON Sunday but NOT - ON the weekend. Or maybe the rules are different in correct (British) English - I am very fastidious when teaching Prepositions whereas Prepositions don't seem to be so important in the American version.

+David Green Thanks for your comment, David. "On" is the correct preposition here! I don't think I've ever heard a British English speaker say "at the weekends". I could be wrong, of course. "At" would be for a location or time. For example, "what do you enjoy doing at 8 o'clock on the weekends at home?" And I can assure you that American English teachers are equally fastidious with our prepositions ;)
@polianapolain
@polianapolain 6 жыл бұрын
David Green you nailed it! According to Cambridge dictionary , among other reliable resources- we say AT the weekend as opposed to On the weekend ' At is used with particular points in the week: What are you doing at the weekend?' Whereas ON is used with a singular day of the week to refer to one occasion: I’ve got to go to London on Friday. Aside from that, this video was helpful and concise.

+Poliana Polain Very interesting. That is not the case for US English; we would say, “on the weekend.” I didn’t even realize that British English speakers say “at the weekend”!

you are wonderful very useful lesson but can I use gerund after " to " ?? or after to must be a infinitive verb ??
@elementalenglish
@elementalenglish 8 жыл бұрын
+Autonomous You can use a gerund after the preposition "to"! The example on the web site is a common one: "I look forward to meeting you." How about this? "He went from riding a bike to driving a truck in one year."
