Hi Emma, I really enjoy watching your videos. I am native English. I was born in England and I find gerunds really hard and confusing. I thought I understood them until I tried taking your test at the end of this video. I only got 3/8 correct! 1. It’s no use avoiding him. He’ll keep asking you until you say yes. After a preposition (wrong) The first question I didn't really understand what I was supposed to do. 2. Do you feel like watching a horror movie or a romantic film? The gerund is watching. (correct) It is used with a subject. (wrong) 3. Not realising that one of my kids is sick is one of my biggest fears! The gerund is realising. (correct) It is used with a subject. (correct) 4. In spite of being injured, she still managed to finish the marathon! The gerund is injured. (wrong) It is used with an expression. (wrong)

I think that it would be helpful to also mention that gerunds can be more easily recognized by understanding that they all lack the accompaniment of an auxiliary verb. All -ing verbs must be preceded by words like will be, was, or is. A verb phrase must indicate tense. If it doesn't do that, it's a gerund.
@andrewsupp6693

I know it's been a long time since you left this comment, but I have a question. Near the beginning of this video she gave us some examples of gerunds (singing, performing, standing). However, the last word in those examples is the word terrifying AND it is preceded with the word "is" yet she doesn't list this as a gerund. Am I wrong to think that "terrifying" is a gerund?

Waiting on a long line can be frustrating. Eating a balance diet of proteins,fats, and carbs is good for a healthy life. I dislike going shopping. I prefer ordering my groceries online and going to pick the up later. I am fed up with asking my husband to put his stuff away after he used them. I can’t stand being around a person who chew gum with its mouth opened.

My biggest problem usually is to explain why students should use gerunds in the first place. They say "yes, I could say I love playing football! But I could also say, I love to play football. What's the difference". So are both versions correct? Or is the construction with to+infinitive in this case really incorrect? Or is the answer simply that gerunds sound more natural?
@heatherwoodley8244
@heatherwoodley8244 Жыл бұрын
I would say that gerunds just sound more natural,.in the same way that spoken English favours a phrasal verb over a single, usually Latin-based verb equivalent, which generally sound more formal. But honestly I don't know that for certiain.

@fenettemesgen4324 Жыл бұрын

@hithere_1967
@hithere_1967 3 жыл бұрын
What is most confusing for those whose native language is a Latin-based one (Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, etc) is that gerunds are only used for actions in progress... In English, gerunds are used in a whole lot of different contexts besides actions in progress! (nouns, adjectives, verbs as subjects, expressions, verb + verb(ING), preposition + verb(ING), etc...hahahaha).
@chamorvenigo3128
@chamorvenigo3128 8 ай бұрын
English doesn't need the concept of gerund to understand how to use verb(ING) form. Also, having a foreign-sounding name "je-runt" for commonly used features of your language would normally impede learning, by subconsciously imposing a mental barrier to the understanding of the concept being taught. In my days, we just call it the continuous form with its noun meaning an activity. Therefore, feel like verb(ING) are activities that we imagine doing and then try gauging our body's emotional response, for making decisions. --- However, the more egregious issue is that to understand Latin gerundo (ought to carry out), you need to also understand the Legal concept of deponent (ought to give/do, or what was promised). At this point, we might as well strengthen our understanding of Roman indicative mood. Now, most people might mistake the Romans for being the creative type, no different than their Greek counterparts, judging from our method of teaching the Latin language. Yet, historically, Romans are the boring logical type who excelled in doing things in columns or building columns. So, it is possible to imagine them preferring a cut-and-dried method of expressing themselves in Latin. For example, if we were to imagine that the Romans were supposed to use Latin in the same manner as how they should write their contracts, some Latin aspects are easier to understand, like: i. Why is there a lack of personal pronouns, with a readily available set of reflective pronouns? Ans.: We don't use personal pronouns in contracts. ii. Why is there a lack of aorist tense, compared to Ancient Greeks? Ans.: A contract only talks about relevant stuff. iii. Why is there a BAM tense in Latin? Ans.: Roman engineers demanded a simple way to state when a project had started, started, or will start. iv. How to use subjunctive? Ans: According to Deconstruction theory, meaning can be obtained within the literature system itself. This means we are dealing with less-than-zero meanings (e.g., good cannot exist without bad). If we strengthen our understanding of one side, the other side is also strengthened. In summary, if we were to take all that is allowed in a legal contract to be Indicative, then the rest is subjunctive. So, now we can see why future tense "will verb" is indicative, the "conditional verb" is indicative, and the "comparative less-than-vivid verb" can be indicative. The next part is something that I paraphrase from my prior reading of D.J. Taylor's translation of Marcus Terentius Varro's fragmented writings: Deed are done three times. Once in the mind (including meetings and discussions), once in the words (giving your word is the same as signing a contract with your words on it), and once one last time, in the verifiable. For this reason, the word dō means "I give" which have the same sense as "I have given" or "I promised to give". The person who promised became a deponent (the promiser). Deponent nouns are those that had promised to give. If what was promised is an object, then it is a danum (gift) or damnum (legal gift). Else it is a gerund. The gerund name in Latin originated from gerō (I carry out … what I had promised to do) and the Roman ablative noun gerundō means "ought to be carried out".

This was perfect. I'm studying Japanese, and nominalization of verbs to talk about what you or someone else likes or dislikes, or are good at or poor at. First of all, I never heard of "nominalization" so I had to look that up. It helped a bit to understand the concept, but your video dialed in to exactly what I needed for this lesson: essentially using gerunds (another word I've never heard of until today) as objects. You also stated that the way to tell gerunds from progressive forms of verbs is all about the context of the sentence., which answered another question of mine. I appreciate it.

Identify gerunds in the following paragraph: Running through the forest, the hiker enjoyed the tranquility of nature surrounding them. Breathing in the crisp, fresh air, they felt rejuvenated with each step. Listening to the rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds, they found solace in the peaceful melody of the wilderness. Pausing at a clearing, they marveled at the breathtaking view of the distant mountains, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore such majestic landscapes. Continuing their journey, they embraced the sense of adventure and freedom that hiking brought into their life.
