My glucose test was terrible. My provider didn’t tell me that the solution may make me sick. I usually go to my appointments by myself since my husband can’t come in the office. I was tested for it at 12 weeks due to being clinically obese and a long family history of Type 2 diabetes. I have maintained a great glucose level throughout my adult life, despite those factors, and I failed my 1- and 3-hour tests by maybe three points above threshold for GD diagnosis. Because of that, they had me checking glucose at home for a month. Diet and exercise didn’t control the numbers; they didn’t start me on insulin right away, but they did put me on metformin due to the levels being tiny enough to possibly control it with oral medication. So far, it has been just enough to keep postprandial levels below 140, so if you’re inching above threshold, look into that first.

Hi, I took the 1 hour test. I got 137. According to Kaiser I failed it because their range is 70 to 135. I did the 3 hour test failed it again. Who in their right mind drinks 100 grams of sugar at once. My fasting number was 84 Kaiser range 70 to 94. After the 1 hour my number was 181, Kaiser range 70 to 179 and I felt so nauseous after drinking it. After 2 hours my number was 174, Kaiser range was 70 to 154. After 3 hours my number was 121, Kaiser range 70 to 139. I feel horrible for not passing it because now they want to test my glucose levels 4 times a day and I have a needle phobia. I am bruised from all the pokes. I don't understand how I even failed the first time if according to the ADA my number was in the normal range of 70 to 140.

I'm pregnant with my second child and this time around I chose not to take this test. I started checking my blood sugars occasionally after high carb meals from around 10 weeks. They were perfect (125 1 hour after high carb meal) until one morning I had a peanut butter and jam sandwich with a glass of milk and my blood sugar was 147! This was at 16 weeks pregnant. I'm so glad I decided to test at home because A. I caught it a lot sooner, whereas I was only going to be tested at 26 weeks! B. I didn't have to take all that sugar and chemicals, and instead noticed the blood sugar spike with a nutritious meal. I appreciate doctors and modern medicine. But it's time they stop following the books and start researching healthier methods that are actually going to help people and not make the rich richer.

So if the glucola is 50g of glucose, what if someone never eats/drinks that much sugar/glucose at one time? That seems like a lot of sweetness without any other macros to balance it out. Also are there alternatives to the glucola since the ingredient is not optimal?

The one my office gave me I don't think was 10oz--but it's all about the amount of glucose in the drink. So it is very possible that yours were both 10oz--that 3 hr would have 100g of glucose, so is just more concentrated than the 1 hour! Hope you got a good flavor!

The 1-hour and 3-hour glucose tolerance tests have been known to be terrible tests for at least 30 YEARS. For instance this paper from 1993 showed that women who "failed" the 1-hr and took the 3-hr test and failed so were then diagnosed with GDM but were able to control blood sugar with just eating less crappy sugar and exercise (walks after eating and before testing) aka type a1 GDM had no difference in outcome from the women who "passed" the glucose tolerance tests and did not get diagnosed with diabetes. This was their rather scathing conclusion again 30 YEARS AGO "The diagnosis of class A1 gestational diabetes is not significantly associated with obstetric and perinatal morbidities. A nondiscriminating diagnostic test undermines the validity of population screening for glucose intolerance." (Lucas, et al, 1993) What have doctors done about this issue in 30 years...nothing apparently. Not saying you should entirely skip the tests because GDM is so serious, but definitely worth the talk with your doctor to maybe try blood sugar monitoring at home instead (if you are willing to do 4 finger pricks a day for 2 weeks for the peace of mind of really knowing what's going on with your blood sugar and avoiding a massive dose of sugar (plus various chemicals) and a bad diagnosis either way). Eat as you normally would is best according to real experts (or as you plan to eat for the rest of your pregnancy) - the eggs beforehand thing is NOT voodoo it definitely alters your metabolism protein helps to regulate blood sugar. If you always eat pancakes covered in syrup as your typical breakfast eat that the day of your 1 hr test and see how you pass or not. Me=pregnant cranky lady obviously.

And the Glucola drink is apparently nasty with harmful chemicals (dextrose and many others) artificial ingredients.. and elevated sugar levels can negatively impact the baby. We have to do so much research outside of what the "doctors" tell us.

Despite more diagnoses of GD with the one-step approach than with the two-step approach, there were no significant between-group differences in the risks of the primary outcomes relating to perinatal and maternal complications. I know glucola is 50 grams of sugar and my body definitely isn’t used to that. I’ve heard of some people opting to skip the glucola test and just take their blood after each meal for a period of time to make sure they don’t have any spikes. Would that be a better option?

I would not test again. Pregnant women tend to have some sort of insulin resistance anyway hence why we shouldn’t have large meals and we should snack and eat healthy. This test is extremely inaccurate, in UK they make you fast for like 12 hours, they they are never on time and give you 75g of sugar and chemicals after like 16 hours of fasting which is not healthy for you or the baby, especially carbs on their own in such a huge amount, for many people that don’t even eat sugary stuff. I felt physically so sick after it that nearly passed out. GD should be diagnosed if you take your sugar at home, have a balance diet and exercise and the levels are still higher than usual. Other than that is an outdated inaccurate method. Also, I find it baffling that all doctors speak about this studies/statistics. I requested one in UK and guess what? They don’t even have one available

I was quite devastated when I was diagnosed because I was in the best shape of my life and not over weight and exercised every day. I was able to control my gd with diet and exercise and everything went well. I would often bike or walk after my meals and limited my carbs. I was able to keep my weight good because of needing to be so careful and 5 weeks after my baby’s delivery I was back down to my pre-pregnancy weight. I am pretty sure I will have gd again unfortunately. I wish there was something I could do to lessen my chance of that. I am very healthy and active. I’m a runner and at an excellent bmi and exercise every day.

@Tester about a year before conceiving I started doing 16:8 intermittent fasting just as a means to be healthier and lose a little weight. I lost 5-10 pounds of stubborn weight and felt great. IF is great for glucose control. Then when I conceived i stopped IF but I kept a diet of somewhat lower and healthy carbs with a higher healthy fat and protein and cut out most of my sugar. I exercised every day. My exercise varied with each trimester. If I did eat a little more carbs or sugar I went for a walk afterward. I was basically careful and trying to eat as if I had GD. I never really felt like I had GD but I was eating and exercising as perfectly as I could and then when I tested I tested negative for GD. Good luck!

I was told to fast before doing my one hour test

Hello, well wishes from Oklahoma. I am wondering for someone who is diabetic prior to pregnancy. Would she have to do the glucola test and would it affect her already well managed diabetes?
@TheDoctorsBjorkman3 жыл бұрын
If you have diabetes before pregnancy, you do NOT need to do the glucola test (or GTT). You may need to make changes to how you manage your diabetes during pregnancy based on hormone, diet, and activity changes, but you are already hopefully working hard to keep your blood sugar under excellent control to reduce the risks to yourself and baby.

I failed my glucose test so im testing regularly and consistently have low blood sugar to the point where the nutritionist told to keep sugary snacks on me :( so confused on how I failed

Pregnant women can have NORMAL lower blood glucose than non-pregnant people, you might want to check that advice from the nutritionist with your doctor...

Why did my obgyn label me diabetic. I fail the 3 hour?

How about if I go fasted to the one hour test? Basically avoid food and definitely not have any carbs...scrambled eggs is a good idea but which is a better option....eating eggs or going completely fasted? My test is scheduled early morning so I can hold off eating :) please advise?

would it not be better to start a low carb diet when pregnant and this way just avoiding diabetes in general?

27W5D & I did my 1hr test - the lab cutoff was 135. I scored 139 (which is under the 140) - did I technically pass?

Same! Waiting to see what they tell me 😳

I got 138 - the nurse called me and just said I was "high and failed" recent literature suggests that there is no increase in risk of GD or adverse/harmful blood-sugar associated outcomes for the pregnancy if below 144. 135 is a made up cutoff. But if your blood sugar is consistently in the 130s or higher after meals that might be harmful so it's good to know if that's the case. The test is rather imperfect. Even if under 135 there is still some risk of actually having GD and the 1 hour screening test just didn't diagnose you.

Thank you for all the information! I'm a few weeks away from my test. If I am diagnosed with gdm would I still be able to have an unmedicated or natural birth? Or does the diagnosis automatically mean that a c section and induction will happen?
@DOMEENAYTION2 жыл бұрын
Not a doctor, but I think it depends on how big baby ends up. My sil only ended up with a csection because baby was reading to be about 9-10lbs and there were concerns that he wouldn't fit.

I don’t think I’d be able to handle this test. I absolutely hate pop and I know that the drink they use in the test is more sugar.

Is your blood glucose better if you are in a fasted state? I have my test in like 3 weeks and it's at like 10 o'clock so if I needed to wait to eat it wouldn't be a big deal. Just didn't know if maybe it would help pass

I failed my Glucola Test at about 26 weeks. The doctor told me to not eat anything before the test. Do you think because I took the test on an empty stomach is what caused me to get a score of 170?

In the Netherlands you only have the 3 hour test. Yeah me..... Pregnant of baby nr 2 so not looking forward for this test 🤢
