My oldest son is in his early 20's and he has type 1 diabetes. But thank God for this piece of article kzbin.infoUgkxVYhghKWmrUgXARZ_ydZTvmmcrw5L0I5i At first he thought he had the flu and was lying down on the bed for three days until his sister took him to the hospital. They took his blood and it was 600. What I do not understand is how he could have gotten it, since no one in the family has it. But he is winning the battle now. This is good stuff.

It’s a good thing she took him to the hospital. Almost 20 yrs. ago, I worked with a gal who lost her seven year old son to undiagnosed diabetes. She took him to the doctor and they said he just had a virus. She took him home and a couple of days later found him dead in bed. It was so shocking and devastating!! I’m so glad your son made it!! ❤

This 20 minute video was more helpful than any of the drs I have talked to. They are a group that was recommending 175 grams of carbs at 13 weeks pregnant and going up from there. I don't do that it made me feel sick. I feel best if half my plate is vegetables. Reading lily's book has helped a lot, but also knowing that there are other physician/dieticians that don't subscribe to high carb during pregnancy is helpful.

I was recommended 175-245 gram of carbs per day at 16 wks pregnant. I’m so frustrated because I didn’t eat a lot of carbs prior to pregnancy, so I tried to get as close to that 175 and it made me feel sick. I’m so frustrated now at 18+ wks and stressed, because they prescribed insulin that I’ll start this wk. This is all so scary. I had a pretty healthy diet prior, but I’m 41 and have family history with diabetes so I figured I would have GD but wasn’t expecting insulin. And I just hate eating all the carbs they want me to eat. I also walk 2-4 miles daily. 😩

The only thing that has mostly worked for me to get my fasting sugar levels to 5.0 mmol or below (think it’s 90 for US/UK) has been at least 30 mins of cardio after dinner. But tbh, it helped me in week 29-33 but my fasting levels have been increasing towards week 34 so it’s now 90-93 (5.0-5.2 mmol), so hormones still play a factor! I am on 35 weeks and my OB-GYN predicted GD in my first trimester because I have had PCOS for 12 years, which increases insulin resistance. My blood sugar level spiked too high after meal, it could not be controlled with oral hypoglycemi and finally had to switch to Insulin, even then my endocrinologist had to increase the insulin dose last week. I kept researching for low GI foods, ended up decreasing carbs and replacing it with healthy proteins and fats (lentil soup and cheese worked wonders). I am praying that my baby does not have any complications due to my GD.

Managing my fasting glucose has been very challenging. Limit in Australia is 5.0 mmol. Not having snack after dinner and doing one of your pregnancy HIIT classes before bed was working. But no longer at 35 weeks. Now trialling the 1 serving of low GI carbs before bed. Whilst it has brought it down, I am still 0.1 and 0.2 over. Thanks for reassuring me not to beat myself up about it and making me feel more comfortable with the prospect of insulin should the doctor go that way.

You are doing amazing, Rachael! You are testing and trying. Yes, be kind to yourself. Some moms can do everything and their body still just doesn’t produce enough insulin to overcome the insulin resistance. Also keep in mind that in a week or so your sugars may level off or even decrease as your placenta’s hormone production decreases a little. But also don’t stress if your sugars just increase until the end.., your diabetes team will help you. Sending you strength to get through this! Be so proud at all the work you have put in!

Theoretically if you have a high fasting BS which is bad for baby long term couldn’t you just not go too long in between snacks/meals? Example I work overnight shift so my “fasting” doesn’t start until 8am when I get home. Some days I sleep a full 8 hours other days (now that I’m pregnant) I’m up in 3, then I have to force myself to be hungry until I’ve hit the 7-8 hour mark to test my fasting. Wouldn’t it just be easier to eliminate a fasting sugar altogether in a case like mine? Or even if I didn’t work overnight and had a normal sleep schedule, why not get up halfway through the night and have a snack to balance it out. Sorry that’s such a long question but it’s been driving me crazy!
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV 4 жыл бұрын
Sarah M This is such a good question and I don’t think all health care providers would answer the same. What I do know is that in research they look at fasting numbers and the higher the fasting number the more increased risk for baby and mom. The fasting number is to evaluate how well your body is handling the sugar that your liver is putting out without the confounding factor of food intake. We can only evaluate this when food intake is not an influencing factor (usually overnight). Each blood sugar is just a snapshot to help try to get a view of what is happing overall and to look for trends. There is no research to show if a woman with GD keeps snacking and avoids fasting to keep sugar down that risk is reduced. It’s possible that it decreases the risk, but it’s also possible that it’s not about the individual number, but related to how well the body moves sugar into the cell overall and between the times we are testing. For your individual case, it does seem awful to leave you starving after an overnight shift. You could ask your doctor if you can eat on those days? I would think they would be less concerned if overall or on days you do sleep 8 hours you are getting fastings in target. Sorry, I don’t have a better answer. Looks like we could use more research in this area.

I haven’t been diagnosed with GD (yet) but I checked my fasting blood sugar right when I woke up this morning bc this has been some concern for me since I’m obese and have familial history of type 2 diabetes. It was 119. I didn’t do anything but brush my teeth (no water or food and laid in bed) and it went down to 87 after like an hour. I tested 1 hour after eating breakfast it was at 166. When I had dinner a couple hours later i decided to do a brisk walk for 10 mins and at the 1 hour mark I check my glucose I was at 127. I’m wondering if this means I’m borderline or I am GD bc of my fasting blood sugar. I wish I checking my blood sugar earlier bc I genuinely did not know how harmful it can be to baby and I don’t know how long my fasting blood sugar has been this high. Thanks so much for all ur info and anything else to help with fasting blood sugars would be much appreciated! I’m super confused about mine bc I am not sure which one to go off of. I’m currently 27 weeks pregnant. I did a one hour glucose test at 19 weeks and I was at 134 btw. Not sure how my glucose test at 28 weeks will go and I’m super nervous seeing these numbers today.

I am seeing a lot of conflicting reports. However, my doctor had me take a 1hr glucose test but had me fast for 8 hrs before. I have seen others post in which you normally don't fast for the 1-hour test. Would that have increased my sugars? Also, I did not eat well the day before. Would that have affected the score as well? Making sure my score didn't misread due to miscommunication of how I should prepare for the test. They said my sugars were pretty high and didn't even recommend the 3hr glucose to me, just said a diabetes team would reach out.

Hi! Not a dr or health professional at all but I also have GD and am on bed rest for severe IC. All my doctors and diabetes educators have agreed that the benefits of most types of exercise is not worth the risk with this specific combination of complications. So basically they said not to worry about exercise and focus on diet and medication as applicable (I am on insulin). However you can do some bicep curls or arm lifts from bed, for 5 min 2x/day. Hope this helps anyone reading this.

@@laylahamidou I agree regarding the risk and thank you for your suggestion! I actually followed the "Incompetent Cervix: Bed Rest During Pregnancy" program available on this channel. Did it every evening. And only once a week a 30 min walk. I also found something that worked for me with the blood sugar values: a keto dessert 1h after my evening meal (e.g. keto cheesecake or brownie), followed by few spoons of Skyr before bed (so another hour after this keto dessert). It worked like magic and I convinced my doctor to keep me away from Insulin. Once I passed the 38 week mark, my levels started to calm down slowly. Now I'm 3 days away from my due date, trying to get this baby out! :D Baby is doing great and it's in the 55 percentile growth wise, no need for C-section. Very useful information. Only my question is not related with pregnancy if a person is having fasting blood glucose level as 13 and not on medication, how do we know the liver is producing extra sugar and what food to take to get a healthy liver.
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV 5 жыл бұрын
karishma mudaliar karishma mudaliar Thank you for your question. If someone that is not pregnant has a fasting blood sugar of 13, the liver is not producing “extra” sugar. The liver stores sugar that we eat (carbs) and then slowly releases it 24-hours / day to keep our blood sugar levels stable. If blood sugar levels are high then either someone has insulin resistance and has difficulty moving the sugar from the blood into the cells and/or they are not producing enough insulin to “unlock” the cell door to move sugar from blood to cells. So a “healthy liver” diet wouldn’t solve the problem. The liver is just doing it’s job. You would want to focus on a healthy lifestyle to reduce insulin resistance. Www.fitaftergd.com/preventtype2

Hi ma’am. Thank you so much for sharing! I’m currently 30 weeks pregnant and feel like I’ve tried every trick in the book to get my fasting down 😞 exercising after dinner, cinnamon in my tea, snacking on protein only at night, ice cream and peanut butter at night (bad idea for me). I did gain some good nuggets from your video. I havnt been counting my carbs throughout my meal. My after meal numbers are always low so I probably haven’t been sticking to the 90-120 carb a day. And I will give the apple cider trick a try! Just ordered some apple cider supplements so I’m hopeful it’ll work. If not…medication or insulin may be in my future. My question is, how many failed attempts do I get before being put on meds/insulin? My fasting numbers have been going up and down for 2 weeks so far…sometimes in the low 90’s sometimes in the highs. My target is 95.

@@vargas7080 the apple cider thing didn’t work for me. What did was lowering the amount of carbs I had for dinner. I literally just ate meat and veggies each evening at 6 or 7pm. Hello, I have a question which concerns me. I took glucose tollerance test and the results were the following: 5.23 fasting sugar, 5.65 glucose level after 1 hour, 5.55 glucose level after 2 hours. My health care provider still suggested to consult with endocrinologist, mainly because of fasting sugars. On the other hand, I read that if I start testing my blood sugars every day, my target fasting sugars should be under 5.3. Therefore, I cannot understand why my health care provider sees any risk in my test results (fasting sugars are under 5.3, but she said it would be better bellow 5.1). Would you have any idea why? Thank you.

Usually it’s in the range it should be in (90-130) one hour post meals. I’m taking this one a little too hard. I had some juice with the meal I ate. Very informative! Having gastational diabetes has been very stressful. I was diagnosed with GD solely because of my fasting levels as BGL fasting is required to be below 90mg/ld and I was 97mg/ld. I'm on Protophane insulin before bed every night now and continuing to increase my dose every few days as my fasting levels will be under range for a day or two then over range. I don't understand why the insulin only appears to work for such a short period of time 🤔 I'm also experiencing levels as low as 74mg/ld during the day which makes me worry I could be going too low but the doctors, educators and dietitians are not worried by the low numbers at all. After seeing this video I am more concerned about being too low than being too high with my levels. Am I worrying over nothing? I've also started realising that my BGL will increase drastically when I'm experiencing high stress levels after almost every meeting with these specialists 😔
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV 5 жыл бұрын
LivingWithSueann Hi Sueann! Sorry, it has been so stressful... it really is a lot to deal with. That’s good you are titrating up. They often start on very low doses and will need to go up. Your blood sugars will likely also keep increasing as your placenta grows and produces more hormones that cause insulin resistance. You may be constantly adjusting your dose. 74 mg is not too low, but getting close. You don’t need to be afraid, but just be ready to treat with quick acting sugar if you do go low. You will likely feel sweaty, dizzy, unwell, hungry, thirsty or shaky. Yes, stress can put your blood sugars up for sure. Your diabetes team will be looking at your meter for trends and not just at your number at the appointment. You can do this! How many weeks are you now?
@LivingWithSueann
@LivingWithSueann 5 жыл бұрын
@@PregnancyandPostpartumTV I'm 23 weeks now but was diagnosed at 13 weeks so it's really only been 2 months of monitoring levels. I've definitely been experiencing the shakiness, dizzy and light headedness when I'm under 90mg/ld on occasion. Unfortunately I'm finding that I'm constantly hungry during the 2 hour gaps between eating despite adding more non carbs into my meals. I get full quickly but come an hour later and I'm ready for more food 😔 I've done some naughties and forgotten to take my insuline at night twice now but my fasting levels remain consistent with the 93mg/ld I keep getting when I do remember. Of course that's still higher than what the specialist want but I've also been told from the diabetic doctor that if I was not pregnant my levels are considered normal and healthy. The diabetic educator also said that there is no risk to the baby until my fasting levels go above 108mg/Id. Is there any truth to what they have told me? I'm sitting on the fence with being told how normal my levels are and the fact I'm not at a level that would risk my unborn baby yet I'm aiming for lower levels and consequently on insuline. Because of how low levels are required to be in the Australia's gastational diabetes test more and more women are getting diagnosed who would have normally been considered healthy. In the end I guess it's a small sacrifice to make but I'm very unsure if it's worth this high level of stress that we are put under which can also cause more issues for our unborn babies 😭 the more information I seem to read the more confused I'm getting in this rabbit hole.
@LivingWithSueann

@Amy Stokes Ricks I've had a healthy baby girl since this message and there were no signs of issues with the placenta. Midwife said the gastational diabetes didn't effect anything so I really didn't need to worry about it and no issues with bubs sugars either. So really disappointed in myself for not trusting my instincts, I won't be doing the gd test again for the next bub. For my personal situation the stress is more of a risk than the borderline gastational diabetes. I'd tested myself every 15 mins for 2 hour before and after a GD appointment and watched my levels skyrocket purely due to the stress. I hadn't eaten anything because of the worry about the appointment before hand either. That's when I realised that I was putting myself at risk.

@@ukvlogs3612 I was tested just last week and my levels are completely normal. Most women will not have to worry after bub is born. I must say though that when I am not pregnant my fasting levels are 5.1 (completely normal) and when I am pregnant my fasting levels are still 5.1 (this is then considered GD) despite my levels not changing from the ordinary, the medical staff have forever labelled me as having GD.... Just completely at a loss for how idiotic this is. It is a good idea to find out what your blood glucose level is without being pregnant so you've at least got a ball park to make a more informed decision in regards to your health. All the best for your pregnancy, try not to stress! In the grand scheme of things, as long as your bundle arrives safe and healthy than it's all worth it!

My case is very different. I have been prediabetic for the past 6 years as my HgbA1c has ranged from 5.6 to 5.9. My body is extremely insulin resistant. Even high complex carbs are like poison for my body and simply don’t let me lose weight even on a well balanced diet. I’m just very different. With my last 2 pregnancies l was put on insulin (high doses in the last trimester) and followed a low carb diet and still my fasting blood sugars were 100-110, rarely in the 90’s. Thankfully my babies were normal weight I didn’t gain more than 20lbs. I can’t imagine being on 150 units of insulin, that can not be healthy for your body. My question is is it really damaging to the baby, that fasting blood sugars be in the 110’s as long as the baby’s weight is in normal range at birth?
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Maya,Yes, every pregnancy is different and has different needs :) The research shows that the higher the blood sugar is the higher the risk is. It's a continuum so the risk will be increased at 110 compared to target.

Hi Jessica! I am 46 and currently expecting my 11th baby. This is my 2nd pregnancy with GD. My 1st was diet controlled but this go round my fasting sugars are a bit higher. I have discussed insulin with my MFM doc but I have a specific concern. Between pregnancies I developed Mast Cell issues which includes hives. I have had hives at least twice during this pregnancy. As I near the end of my pregnancy I know that my mast cell issues will return and I am concerned that insulin may be a trigger. There are several ladies on both of my GD FAcebook groups who have allergy type symptoms from insulin. My question is do fasting blood sugars that run 100-105 really require insulin? I feel that even though they are elevated and “above target” the risk of chronic hives for 10 weeks is a real one (I am almost 29 weeks and usually deliver between 38-39 weeks)
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV

Hello, each case is different and the risk of higher sugars is a gradient so the higher the sugars the higher the risk. Your numbers are out of target. I’m in Canada also and diabetes clinics are still seeing patients (some are doing phone call or virtual appointments). It’s likely your doctor will call you when they review the numbers, but it’s a good idea call your doctor right away to follow up about a referral to a clinic. Hello Sajida, I'm so sorry you are so stressed. Yes, your blood sugars are out of the target range. You should bring them to a doctor or your diabetes team so they can make recommendations. They will make medication or insulin recommendations for you. I'm not sure what is in your chicken motton recipe, but from other recipes that I'm finding online it should be OK. If you have more questions feel free to join our gestational diabetes support group facebook.com/groups/2097872227176950/ You are almost there!

Keshilla shpirterore You have Type 1 diabetes? Type 1 is an autoimmune disease which destroys the function of all beta cells of the pancreas. Very different from gestational diabetes. Do you mean you have gestational, but you already require insulin? Mornings are often the most difficult to control. Do you have a doctor or diabetes team helping you?

prajeesh ravindran Many women take Metformin first trimester, especially those with PCOS first trimester. It does cross the placenta barrier so some moms opt to take insulin instead.

Thank you so much for your video on #1 excercise for controlling GD, can you please suggest if my glucose level is between 98-100 should I go for insulin, as I don’t want to 😌

Hi Pramila, I can't give you medical recommendations as I don't know your full history, what you are eating etc. If you are already trying everything else to control your blood sugars and still getting an average of 98 - 100 this is above target and likely something that your doctors would consider. I would also consider how many weeks pregnant you are as they tend to go up as you get farther along although some women see it levels off in the last couple weeks due to the placenta hormones leveling off. Are you limiting carbs to 90-130/day and did you see this video? kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKfdaoqDrbuhgNk

Thank you so much for your time and response. I am in my 33rd week of pregnancy, I have just started limiting my carbs and yes I have seen your specified video ..and your suggested 15 min work outs which I do only for 11-12 min actually helping to keep my post meal sugar level at around 105-108 range .. will surely wait for another week n see how it improves ... n surely in contact with my doctor 🙏😊

Hi Jess, after following high protein and low carb diet my blood sugar level was under good control as fasting was 78-85, after mean 1 hr sugar was - 126+-, after 1 hour it was around 106 to 112, doctor also was very glad hearing. But day before yesterday I got severe feet pricking and but swelling so didn’t so any walking so fasting sugar for today is 95 and yesterday it was 100, will this continue to increase if I don’t do excercise and how long I completed 34 week 2 days back ☺️

Pramila, it depends when you are getting those readings. If it's fasting, that's not good. If it's after a meal, they r good. So it depends.

Yes, you can just add however many carbs your diabetes provider recommended to it :) or have it as a snack if you didn’t require carbs at that time.

I had a horrible MFM doctor he said bc I was overweight and had gestational diabetes my baby wouldn’t make it. All he did every time I saw him was remind me how overweight I was and how that would kill my baby. I did everything they told me to do I was so strict about my diet. I ended up on insulin and was told that was my fault and when my baby came at 32 weeks they said it was bc of my being overweight. I thought I gave myself gestational diabetes I was a wreck the whole pregnancy he was such a jerk shouldn’t be a doctor.

Megan Ma Hi Megan! Congratulations on your pregnancy! Did you grab the meal plan? www.fitaftergd.com/meal-plan ? If you try all the lifestyle things, it just may be that your pancreas isn’t producing enough insulin to overcome the insulin resistance from the hormones your placenta is producing. Feel free to reach out with any specific questions :)

I am 31 weeks pregnant expecting my 3rd child. I have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I take 4 blood tests a day but my morning 12 hours fasting blood glucose levels is always between 5.5 to 5.9-high results. All after meals test is normal.I am currently taking between 90 to 150gram carb everyday still my fasting blood tests is high.I have my dinner at 7pm, can you tell me where I made a mistake and I am getting this high result?I am not on medication presently.

Hi Beema! Congratulations on your pregnancy. First of all, I don't think you are "making a mistake" . This is not your fault and some women can do everything and still have high blood sugars due to the insulin resistance and their pancreas just isn't making enough insulin. However, I did notice that you said 12 hour fast. I would try 8 hours and see if that helps. Your liver is putting out sugar 24 hours a day and sometimes sugars can be higher at the 12 hour fasting mark and 8 hours is still fasting. Also, if you are including 45 min activity per day that can help deplete glycogen stores in the muscles and then you use your blood sugar to replenish lowering your sugars again. Some moms have a protein snack at 11 pm to help their 7 am fasting reading. There isn't any research on this, but it still falls in the guideline recommendations. But, definitely ask your doctor and only do if it works for you (if it's making your sleep deprived don't wake up as lack of sleep can also elevate sugars). Hope that gives you some ideas :)

@@PregnancyandPostpartumTV .hi Jessica thank you for replay . I followed your advice and tried it yesterday and results was better and so I will continue this pattern and see the outcome. It does seem to be the lack of sleep along with following the fasting timing of my blood test. I do 20 mins cardio workout and 20 mins walking after each meal. I watch all your videos which is really helpful for G.D. Keep up the good work and keep safe. Thanks once again for your advice.
