You should strengthen the lower back muscles if that's your case. With preference to progression and technique over weight loads. Exercises such as normal plank and lateral plank, glute bridges, light weight good mornings with Barbell with knees more bended to engage more glutes and lower back(for beginners medicinal ball it's more recommended). Suitcase Kettlebell dead lift among other exercises with just body weight like dead bug, alternate swimmers are absolutly effective to produce excelente results over time. Basically the way to protect any conditions we might have in terms of pain or injuries related to back muscles is to gain more muscle + strength in that area and surrounding muscles as this will work as an Armour. Hope this helps. I have a disk injury L4 and L5 and only feel the pain coming back when there's loss of muscle volume or strength due to longer periods without training. Good luck and take care of yourself. Never rush the process and you will get great results at your own pace
