Thank you Sensei. I’m always a bit nervous when doing kumite and thought this was a weakness of mine. I see it in a new light now after your “embrace discomfort in learning” angle at sparring.

Points 5 and 6 are connected, if you practice kumite with someone who treats you with respect then you will both learn from the experience. Sometimes picking the right partner makes a big difference in whether you enjoy kumite or not.

Yes, Sensei. So true. As a girl, a big part of the nervousness in my case is due to not feeling safe when sparring with way stronger and more apt partners. But I’ll send your video to all of them 😅. Thank you again for the insights!

10/10 on #6, some people definitely don’t think respect is important in training. My club bows to each other before and after partner drills, and at the end of class as well. Respect is one of the most important things in the dojo, too many people let it fall by the wayside

I really like your videos and shorts, because you go straight to the point, not for the sake of it, but for the sake of teaching. You don't babble on and off about stuff. Keep it up. Thanks for the infos.

Since discovering your video Mr. Gardiner, I enjoy your tips and conditioning advice which I find it very essential not only inside a dojo but outside in the real world. Keep up the good work and hopefully, new videos will come, especially in outside the dojo conditioning and if any I missed out, let me know which of your vids so I can check out. Be safe Mr. Gardiner.

Nice, great tips and videos, enjoying following your ideas. Thanks ! I'd add that - especially on social media, keeping an open mind and humble opinion can help... Karate is such a widespread martial art that it knows a lot of different variations, and isn't always practiced with the same mindset everywhere.

Great advice. Respecting my training partner is something I had to train myself to do. Sounds weird, right? I would just line up and start the movements we were training on without bowing out of respect. I make sure to bow now. It’s the small things (like Sensei telling me to work the pads here in this vid) that helps. Thanks for the video!

Stretching and strengthening in the dojo is enough. The problem is rather, it is completely neglected in many many dojos! I trained in countless ones where they don't do ANYTHING in that direction: no (proper) stretching at the beginning and at the end; no push-ups, no sit-ups, NOTHING! And when asked, many say, here we do karate, the rest you can do in the gym. And I'm like... are you f*cking stupid?? Stretching and conditioning is 100% part of karate training! We just don't do it with iron, we do it with bodyweight. And IF you want to go the EXTRA MILE, you can go to the gym for extra resistance if even piggyback is still not enough for you. And don't get me started on Makiwara and mits and stuff. It terrifies me how many dojos don't include that in their training program. Very frustrating!!!!

The majority of karateka only attend the dojo 1 or 2 times per week. Stretching only 2 times per week is not going to produce the same results as a higher frequency. The same thing applies to strength and conditioning, are you suggesting that they shouldn't do work outside of the dojo? Press ups and sit ups is not a complete training programme and most people would benefit from one, not just for Karate but for general health and longevity. Hitting pads, yes this should be done in all dojos, but it's surprising how many don't.

@@jkgardiner yeah, once a week is definitely not enough. But 2 times should be the sweet spot for most people. 3 times probably optimal. Anyway, I don't think it is a matter of "shouldn't", but rather "shouldn't need", especially that we (amateurs) have lives and jobs to pursue and stuff ;-P (and then there is muscle recovery...) I envy Kyokushin practicioners, they really value stretching and strength training in the dojo. I actually even recall Mas Oyama saying, gym training is useless. I really get angry when we don't do this kind of exercises regularly in the dojo: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oH_ZdYRsiKahaqc
