I play a Magic the Gathering Online Pauper league with Simic Turbo Fog, a deck from Patreon subscriber Aethus. This deck uses combat prevention effects like Fog, Moment's Peace, and Tangle alongside life gain in Weather The Storm to make it impossible for your opponent to beat you with damage. Then you ramp and hit your land drops until you can one-card combo blast them with Stream of Thought! Get in the pillow fort! MTG

@43:00 to this point I think he missed the main point of the deck that stream of thought is 1 mana spell that the other copy shuffles back in with a couple counters and fogs. It's very cool to see an experienced very talented player learning a pretty hard deck to pilot on the fly. Some of the niche interactions like arcane denial your own weather as a 4 mana draw 3 and gain some life being a key tool that is not obvious at a glance.

Yeah. Hearing "I don't like arcane denial in this deck" is weird since it's so important.

You can cast Stream without replicate. Just 1 mana, it's fine. Keep the shields up. You can shuffle back the 1st stream when you get the second. Anytime you have a Stream in hand and 2-3 things to shuffle, just cast it for 1. You were hoarding them like you needed to cast boh of them to win. You were actively discarding to hand size instead of just casting it for 1.

There's a couple of different builds of turbofog in pauper, I'm a bigger fan of the builds with preordain over brainstorm, since it is much more efficient at finding specific effects, and never has the option of brainstorm locking you. Additionally, Desert is an all star in turbofog, allowing you to pick apart your opponent's creatures if they attack, even if you fog the damage. Additionally, I'm not a fan of Pieces of the puzzle, with it being a sorcery, and basically being forced to keep a stream of thought if it shows up, even if you aren't ready for it. I rather to play 1 deep analysis and 2 behold the multiverse.

@CheeseWedge056 5 ай бұрын
@@benlittle5543Okay Grandpa, time to go back to bed. For real though, I miss erasure being good. I think that discard is not the way forwards, since you just don't care about your opponents threats if they're dealing no damage, and the same is true of sweepers. 3 Colours is also incredibly difficult to support in a pauper deck. Not impossible, but I don't think that the cards that you get off a third colour outweigh the downsides of having to mess with your mana for it..
@CheeseWedge056

An additional thing to acknowledge is that the best thing to do is almost always cast your instants on your opponents turn, then follow up with a big weather. You noted denial as being a bad card, but you missed a very important interaction, which is that you can counter one of the copies of a weather the storm with arcane denial and then draw 3 on the next turn.
@benlittle5543
@benlittle5543 5 ай бұрын
I tried running opt over preordain for a bit to boast storm count. It was not worth it. Though binning the first AK was pretty sweet. Discard would be helpful against counterspells and the non combat damage sources. I agree 3 color is usually not worth it in pauper.

Stream on 1 mana seems so good. Was surprised to not see that in the first two matches. Increase the density of fogs/cantrips and then stream your stream later to win. It only ever needs to cost 1 mana to win. Replicate is just icing and protection.

This is my favorite pauper deck to pilot. Arcane denial belongs main because it doubles as Ancestral. Play some bait spell, it gets counteted, deny your own spell on the stack. Draw 3. Turbo fog is def tier 2, but it has game plans vs all pauper decks.

Dont use your life gain as pseudo fogs. The deck as enough real fogs. Play the fogs, get into a counter war over fogs and then at the end of their turn gain life boosted by the counter spell storm count. Fog - counter spell - moments peace - counterspell - Weather the storm is way better than tapping out for ponder ponder brainstorm Weather the storm, because this line doesnt take counter spells out of their hands.
@brandantuck3147
@brandantuck3147 5 ай бұрын
Its been said but stream for one instead of replicate and also i think the storm gain life card works best as the last "fog" for over the counterspell war, this way you get extra storm for opponents counterspells and becomes much more substantial and harder to interact with the further you go in a counter war
@Fandwicksvhs
@Fandwicksvhs 5 ай бұрын
Yeah I was pretty confused when he kept playing multiple instants and a weather the storm on his turn, then "holding up a fog" on the opponent's turn. Should you play fog first, then after the fight, do your instants and weather.

A thing to consider at 16:34 was Arcane Denial'ing your own Lorien, to draw 3 and not get opp any draws. It's also a "draw 3" spell if you counter your own unneded spells, or Weather copies. But don't worry about the lines you might have missed - this deck is much more intricate than it looks. Always nice to see you jumping into Pauper every now and a while!

This was a fascinating video! On the one hand it was very interesting watching you learn a deck you have little experience with and not know many of its interactions (as covered in some of the comments), and on the other hand it was quite frustrating. I’d love to see a follow up video with another version of this deck discussing and trying some of the more nuanced plays it is capable of. And more pauper content in general!

Pauper!? A man after my own heart. I'd love to see more. And I'm really hoping you feel the diversity and fun of the format post ban. I have been loving it. And despite what a lot of people think, "brews" have felt pretty viable as long as you're doing so within existing shells or using established engines. You just need that background. Cheers!

The "replicate" line on Stream of Thought is a trap unless you need it to get 1 copy through a bunch of counters. Just pretend it doesn't have replicate, use them to loop each other, and you'll do better.

Weather the storm is a very strong card to play over a counter fog war or them attempting to burn you out. If you got storm up 5-6 upon casting it can potentially convert into an uncounterable fog winning over the head of their combat step.

R1G1 was definitely a matchup inexperience thing. It's a pretty straightforward resource battle where the key axis is usually card draw/attrition, not the outcome of individual counterwars.

I play this deck myself (a different version with red and swirling sandstorm to relieve the pressure sometimes) and I have a couple of suggestion if you ever play it again: The deck is very punishing, as you have seen, and a small mistake in the mid game can cost the game. 1. You already figured it out but against blue decks you want to have available every instant speed thing you can: never replicate a stream if it’s not lethal, you can sometime cast it to shuffle a brainstorm or to reshuffle some tangles or cs but otherwise just keep it in hand 2 there is a useful trick with arcane denial and it’s arguably the reason they are in MD: you can counter a copy of weather to draw 3 in upkeep at the cost of a fraction of a card, sometimes using against your own spells can be beneficial when they counter something like a fog that wasn’t protecting you from lethal. 3 monarch is good for you, given that you play correctly sometimes it can backfire but the majority of the cards they draw does not matter and cuts your “clock” in half 4 that’s more of a deck construction thing so I think it depends more on who sends the donation decks rather than on you but I’m still going to say it: mystics is good instead of the terrors in the side, you are going to spew out many instant and sorceries anyway and you are never the aggro, even terrors are more on blocking duty usually so having a chump blocker engine is usually better even given the higher casting cost

A big play for arcane denial and the reason it's in the deck is that when you get in a counterspell fight over a fog you follow that up with weather the storm and denial one copy of weather. It's 2 mana and 3 life to draw 3 next turn.

As an avid walls player, I believe bringing in the terrors may have been correct. Threatening their lift total seems to be the only way you win against the walls player, they develop faster than you and have so much card draw that you giving them cards off of words of wisdom and such that you'll get overwhelmed since fogs don't do anything to them.

Honestly I think a lot of these games you may have tried to play the turbofog deck way too fast. It’s not like the deck is trying to speed towards victory, it’s trying to hard grind the opponent out. Things like playing stream of thought with no replicate, saving card draw spells as long as you have a land drop and can durdle might be the play so you have more options when it matters rather than just churning through your deck for the sake of churning.

I love Pauper but I think most of the current meta is boring as hell... Tons of heavy control decks, and tons of aggro/burn. No other archetype that can do much against: WotC constantly bans key pieces for most combo decks, and downgrades even more oppressive cards suitable for the two previous categories, Murmuring Mystic being the perfect example...
