Fights in this game can end in one exchange if you go in like a dumbass and get killed by a one-hit counter with proper timing. Fights in hellish quart are super-tight. Yay this game's spread from Skallagrim into the Woolie Verse :D Little notes from Swordtube: 19:14 "You just step into it!" Good, so they made rapier feel right :P The reason rapier keeps the point forward, aka is 'presenting threat,' is so that opponents have to reconsider running right up to you. This is why in Nidhogg, you can kill _without even pressing a button_ based on spacing alone. That twist at 27:50 wasn't _just_ to widen the wound -- in fact that may have been an afterthought! It was more about keeping the hilt in a defensive position, because Barabasz's limp body _almost dragged your sword down out of defensive alignment!_ You don't want to penetrate somebody all the way to the hilt, _least of all_ if it's following a track that leaves you wide open, so Isabella had to adjust her angle to prevent that! That wacky angle at 42:48 is closest to Krumphau (hard P, hard H, not a ph), one of the Master Cuts or Meisterhauen. The idea of these cuts is that they have the leverage to hard-counter certain guards or blow through certain other attacks -- basically, insane _situational_ priority. You just saw why the Krumphau is considered a Master Cut :P We saw another one, Zwerchhau (my personal favorite

longswords are actually really light handed weapons because when you two hand a weapon, you are basically reducing the load by half in each hand. The opposite would be a rapier because you are controlling a big metal hilt and blade with only one hand. Rapiers tend to be heavier than longswords on average due to the extra complexity of the hilt and longer reach.
@irtazaazam25733 жыл бұрын
Not a 2 handed long sword but for a one handed weapon they're pretty heavy.
@We1mann3 жыл бұрын
56:13 Typically, using a two handed sword in two hands requires less strength than using a one handed sword in one hand, since the two handed sword is usually less than twice as heavy. Really, despite the stereotypical fantasy images, two handers are a good choice for those with a lower strength stat (unless the thing is bloody huge).

About Woolie’s comment on the longsword possibly being the most tiring to use, The swords on display in Hellish quart, and most historical swords in general are somewhere in the neighborhood of 2.5lbs to 3.5lbs. The Rapier is actually notable as on average being the heaviest weapon in this lineup with roughly the same amount of steel as an average longsword in the blade but with a more elaborate hilt requiring more steel and therefore more weight. The longsword is on average just a bit lighter still, and the lightest swords being the sabers. Cheers to you all and I really enjoyed the vid. Was wondering if/when WoolieVersus might give this game a look.
@CosmicG7773 жыл бұрын
Ironically though, the lightest, the saber, is the most tiring because it FEELS the heaviest. While the heaviest, the rapier, is the least tiring because it FEELS the lightest thanks to the fact that half it's weight is in the hilt. Weight distribution makes a big difference.
@irtazaazam25733 жыл бұрын
Same amount of steel as an arming sword more likely
@jakubfabisiak98103 жыл бұрын
@@CosmicG777 dunno. I have both a rapier (~1200 grams), and a saber (740 grams), and the difference is in favour of the saber. It feels a lot more lively, too. That said, even a 1500 gram longsword can be very nimble, because of the leverage afforded by the use of two hands, and I know of longswords as light as 1100 grams. Can't wait for more characters - the schiavona might be sick, and the turkish/tatar characters. There's also talk of a scottish basket-hilt claymore, and maybe some rapier and main-gauche/cloak combo could be really sick if implemented right (there's already a taste with Gedeon using his mug to parry in one of the videos from Kubold).
@CosmicG7773 жыл бұрын
@@jakubfabisiak9810 Right. I was referring to 1 handing the swords based on the weight distribution and leverage. 2 handing definitely helps immensely.The saber I own is a nice chopper but there is some weight to blade so it can tire the wrist a bit. Specifically it is a Civil War Light Calvary Sabre. I also have a Czech Dusack but that's a little different since it's a shorter blade than the types of sabers we've been talking about.
@jakubfabisiak98103 жыл бұрын
@@CosmicG777 light cav is better than the ol' wristbreaker, but I guess a lot depends on how the saber is handled. The stuff you see from Sieniawski and his sons is one example (the saber I have is actually made by Sieniawski, and is the same that was used in Born for the Saber). Then again, the rapier is more about control of the lines, than speedy pokes - in that it is quite different from the fast stabbing weapon for people with much more finesse, than strength. And in the game (meaning Hellish Quart), the most scary thing you can do with the rapier is actually nothing. Do nothing and keep your options open and it makes it really difficult to close the distance - depends on very precise timing, and spacing, and the punish is brutal. Man I love this game, evem if my potato laptop has to run on 640x400 on low to get a proper framerate. I only wish Kubold had the balls to do what the developers of the old Barbarian for C64 did when they put Maria Whittaker on the cover :)

With Marie, you have very quick crossups and great range. Thing is, a lot of flubbed stabs are probably due to using normal thrusts instead of lunges at a long enough range - you hit the heart hitbox in the chest, go through the head/neck or even deeply enough through the arm and you're good. You have to manage her range very well, but she's very quick in and out. That said, you aren't completely screwed when relatively close to your opponent, that's where circling around your opponent and cutting at the legs then head comes into handy. You might also choose to be an asshole and just snipe the hands when baiting your opponent into attacking into a feint of yours. She's also good with binding opponents who fight at longpoint. There are two special moves in particular which are good for this. Anticipate where your opponent's blade will be at any point (and a very good way of doing this is by making them commit to an attack that you expect and combining this with movement), and you can generally safely attack if you launch an attack from an appropriately safe quadrant (generally where you expect their blade to be when you launch your attack, effectively blocking off their blade's path as you attack). This is called attacking with opposition - it's the safest you can get. It's also important to not just fight linearly - small sideways steps here and there before throwing in an attack will help you angle in on your opponent by getting around their weapon. sauce: fencer of various systems for 14 years and counting

Woolie. The heaviest weapon there (or the most tiring depending) is the rapier. The Longsword is actually fairly light, and the rest are about the same as the rapier. It is more taxing on the wrist and because of the range, makes it awkward in very close combat/quarters where you would draw a knife or throw a fist. Another thing to note, is that rapiers aren't great at cutting. They are a peicing weapon, unlike the longsword which can do both equally well but not better. No the sword itself, appears to be a cup hilt rapier in spanish style (I think, I am watching on a tiny phone so sorry for any inaccuracies); and telling by his clothes he should have a gauche with that rapier. A gauche for those unaware is a dagger of sorts, it is usually paired as a parrying dagger. The use and tactic of deflecting a thrust by a enemy with the Gauche, while stabbing them with the rapier is favorited by those who use this combination. All of this being said, the game reminded me of the Deadliest Warrior game on ps2.

imagine a lot more differnt characters with different swords and styles and people playing high stakes tournaments like the ones they do for mortal kombat, it would be fucking awesome

it's just a longsword. "bastard sword" as a term is usually meant to refer to a hand-and-a-half sword, which is commonly understood to be a longsword with a shorter grip to aid in one-handed use.

I have honestly always wanted a fighting game about European fencing, so I’m stoked this exists! I don’t have a ton of interest in historical re-enactments though, so I’mma see if I can mod all the music to be theme music of all the sword lesbians in anime fightgames prior

Would be interesting to see you revist this, and see how it has improved, and the new characters.

This reminds me of Virtua fighter 4 a little. Where 75% of the things you are doing only never show up on the screen. You basically have to get a PhD in physics to play it.

Wonder if Woolie will ever play Omen of Sorrow. I played the demo and it seemed like a low budget game that kinda reminded of me of KOF. But don’t quote me on that.

It's been far too long since the FGC got a game like this. Too bad there is no online or it would pop off!
