In this episode, I attempt to describe the comfort zone and how one needs to poke at the boundaries of the ring.
Permission to Torque is a Mental Health movement set up to show others that you "get it" by displaying a discrete symbol for others to take comfort in. Its not about sitting around in a circle feeling sorry for yourself, its about shared experience and getting out there to find out what makes us happy - this is the aim of my trip and why I am sharing it on KZbin, the good days and the inevitable bad ones too.
I hope you enjoy the journey with me and find it at least vaguely useful! :)

I started watching this series a month or so ago. Unemployed, depressed, stuck. I live in the eastern US and had a wedding to go to in the south, and watching these suddenly made me think "what if I just keep going?" So I did. I drove all the way across the country and am currently typing this from the last hotel before getting home again, 16 days later. I've seen incredible sights that I thought I'd never get to see. Thanks for the inspiration.

Most days im a depressed miserable c**nt but 18:05 had me in stitches. I know how you feel on a day to day basis just i'm in a terrible place in life financial wise, it's hard to live in ones mind with your own thoughts but you have to realise you make others feel good about themselves so feel good about yourself knowing you do so. I regularly watch the old uploads of you going through the misery of traveling to London each day but you still had humour

You're right that we can't escape our problems by going on holiday, but I find that thinking through my problems when I'm traveling is some of my most productive thinking. I find that getting away from something helps me think about it and make sense of it. That makes me feel better, so I have to think it's emotionally healthy. Also I have a "theory of travel" that every trip/vacation is really made up of three trips: 1) the one you expect before you travel, 2) the one that actually happens, and 3) the one you remember afterward. They're all different, and the third one is probably the most important and most restorative, and the one that takes the longest, because I am constantly revising my memories of it to make it better and more interesting than the actual trip (#2) was. I also find that during the actual trip (trip #2), I usually start off very optimistic and upbeat, then have a one- or two-day period of weariness and depression. Then when I see the end of the trip coming, I buck up and start trying to make the most of what's left of the trip, and I get happy again - and that attitude seems to carry over to life in general and to the specific problems I have been pondering. Anyway I kinda see you going through a similar progression in this series. Bottom line, thanks for doing this series - I loved it and I hope you do more in the future.

Great series Chris. I totally agree with you regarding being trapped in your comfort zone. I spent 15 years in a job being miserable, angry and being horrible to the people I love just because I thought there were no other options. At the age of 51, I quit that job and a whole world of opportunity opened up. I'm now outside my comfort zone but enjoying learning my new job. Life is looking up. Cheers.

I've just come back from rolling round Europe on my 'happy shopper' SV650 with my son. Made it down it lake Como via the Ardennes, Baden Baden-blackforest, Swiss alps and passes then over the Stelvio and back up through the Timmelsjoch. Stopped of at the Nurburgring for a few laps too. An incredible 8 days. I never thought I'd do it and it was better than I could dream. Lucky with the weather, the trip was perfect. Watching you and Al on the BBBs made me say 'fuck it, I'm giving it a go' so I got my A licence a couple of years ago and here we are. Decompresing now, French alps next!

I worked my arse off for 40 years of which I was somewhere else on this planet other than my home for over 5 years of it. I got through it by accepting that life is going to throw crap at you whatever, so you have to face up to the problems by treating them as a challenge and I don't like being beaten by life's challenges so I fight like hell to prevent these problems from spoiling the life of my family. You have to be honest with yourself though about the cause of the problem. Anyway, at the end of my working life now so fighting to create my own challenges now!

I can relate to a lot of what you discuss (I've had bi-polar for years), there is a fine line between thinking screw it and going away on a whim or becoming a hermit. Sometimes both help short term, but not ideal. In the past I've reverted to Spock mode (logic) to cope until things levelled out. The bit about surrounding yourself with friends who are more in tune with the person you are now, who you want to be and understand your situation. I love your content and 44teeth, I've only just come across it...parp. *I developed my own cognitive therapy and was lucky enough to cope without meds. I have been coping with the anxiety thing since childhood (age 53 now). I'm watching the 44teeth News episode where you discuss it. My routine in the morning is to get up, cuppa, washing up (relaxing), then shower...small things, but a structure and a bare minimum of achievment for any given day. Any time you need advice from someone who has been through the ringer...steady. Oliver's Mount this weekend, I'll enjoy it once I'm there. 🏆🍻

Greetings from the US. Long time 44 teeth and baron fan. Been following this series, but one thing you said in this one i can attest to. "Picking something you want to do rather than something that's cool or popular to do". Been going thru a few uneasy times and life got real busy this past 6 months. Had some anxiety and didnt realise it. Had a work trip to Suwanee Georgia, somewhere I'd never been. Anyway, got out early one day and my flight was the next morning. I had a whole day to myself and didnt know what to do. Everyone said check places downtown Atlants and bars and restaurants. But I didnt want to do all that for some reason. Spent 45 minutes trying to decide. It was a gorgeous day so I drove my rental north and came across a beautiful state park in a gorge with awesome views and waterfalls. Was not geared for a hike but I did it anyway. Had a great relaxing and eye opening experience. Had the whole place to myself completely alone since it was a weekday. Was so peaceful and I got rid of so much anxiety, it put things into perspective. Had a full hike and for some reason i was not fatigued. Truly something great that happened spur of the moment. Let life take me there and it was rewarding even if it was one day. We all need that from time to time. My anxiety was gone. The only thing missing was my motorcycle but no matter. Thanks guys.

The first part of this vid I totally relate to . I go on solo trips on the tet and on road . I usually ride for a good 4 / 5 days solid get to the med and then decide I’ve cleared my head enough and end up riding back early in one day as I miss my life back home. Maybe that’s why we do it , it makes us appreciate what we have ?

Great series, thank you. I’m lucky enough to have retired in my 50’s and although I have urges to go off on my GSA with mates (although might try a solo next) I have to consider my wife. If I was single I’d be off… maybe not quite as far as Bruce Smart, but I’d do far more 2 wheeled adventure trips. I’ve already had a whizz through France this year, I might be able to squeeze another one in? 🤔 Watching this series definitely increases the urge.

Cheers to you sir, and cheers to the rest of us who use our motorcycles as outlets to escape the doldrums of life’s bull shit and rediscover ourselves. Curiously I arrived at somewhat of the some conclusion as you after my trip; Because I'm insignificant in the grand scheme of things, it's okay to take a timeout for personal growth. The world will keep revolving without me for a while. We're so priviliged, that we can exist just to have fun while it lasts! BTW the mental image of someone frantically washing the insides of the Tulip Curtains while being watched through the peeping window in the bathroom, absolutely had me in stitches! 😂

Aside from the adventure and experiences one often gains from a long solo moto trip, you can’t deny it’s also just naturally a great way to sort through any mental garbage one can accumulate over time just living, with work and other obligations and all. After I get home from a long multi day trip I often feel very much rejuvenated and like you noted in this vid, actually enthusiastic to get BACK to normal life. To me it’s a great sign you got what you were looking for out of a trip if you can get to that point, rather than dreading having to go back home. Been fun following your travels on this trip and happy to see your spirits renewed.

It takes great courage to do what you did on this trip and above all, huge resolve to get it done so you should feel a great sense of accomplishment. I hope you are doing well now that you are back with your son and please keep up the great content. I used to watch a lot of your videos from all those years ago when you rode from Farnham in to London because your route up the A3 past New Malden, down through Roehampton, Barnes, Hammersmith, Cromwell Road, Kensington on up to Regent Street etc etc were all places where I lived and worked over the years. I agree re the comfort zone - it's good to do something that scares you from time to time. Fair play to you 👍 I’ve been riding off and on for 30+ years now and in the last couple of years I’ve got back into it in a big way even buying a 125 for my work commute even though I don’t have to deal with traffic or cover any distance but riding my bike just puts my mind in a better place Cars and bike have been my passion from childhood but going anywhere in the uk in a car is so stressful nowadays I only do it if I have to I have other bikes and I’m trying to get out as often as possible but what with the current financial situation it’s not always possible I’ve been trying to explore the UK with little weekend trips etc I would like to get to a stage where I could do something in Europe but it feels me with dread just thinking about it I need that familiarity like I have with UK travel “money/laws/petrol stations/hotels etc” Keep doing what you’re doing many of us enjoy it and understand where you’re coming from

Ha, we all get a bit 'zen and the art...' philosophical when logging mega kays on the bike, & thereafter a bit pure nuts towards the end of a long day in the saddle wriggling around to alleviate the numbness. As a veteran of a round-the-world 13 month bike adventure 23 years ago I tried to recapture a bit of that with a 5000km 6.5 day blat to Aragon for the GP last year on my 900SS. Europe so much easier than the sub-continent riding wise, enabling big kays. But motorways are hideous. Better to get lost, as non GPS riding me does effortlessly. Then hidden worlds appear. Baden-Baden; yes sleepy Bavaria. Hope you got your mojo on in the curves of the Schwartzweld. Budapest: Fantastic weekend break city. Chris, you need more bed bugs in your hotels. Those places you stayed you can only get away with on a Beemer.

Getting ready for Wild Atlantic Way tour starting on Saturday. Anxiety is really kicking in, especially as just doing it without planned accommodation and booking on the fly or camping. This series has really motivated and helped just to chill and get on with it and enjoy the adventure. Cheers Chris.

Really great series, man. I’m currently dealing with a breakup that I wasn’t dealing with when this series started. I can definitely relate to a lot of what you were going through on this trip. I’m itching to kit the bike up and head out somewhere now. Love from Ohio, USA.

Fantastic series mate. I toured europe on bikes years ago when i was a lad. Going to Saltzburg with my wife in August. Was a bit apprehensive but not after watching you. Witty and reflective. All the best.

I did a lot of travelling 10-15 years ago because I didn't know where my life was heading. Since then I got married and I have 3 children. Life is great and my life has purpose. I can see myself travelling with my wife once the kids get older. Looking forward to it all.

Nice one, Chris. I’m on a solo 10 day trip around France right now. Everyone thought I was crazy, but it’s one of the best things I’ve done. Will tell you all about it if I see you at Bahnstormer again one day.

Chris, we eastern europeans cherish nothing more than watching and gloating over other people's suffering. Like you suffered in that car park. :D
