A little tip for you. On your instruments bus, use an M/S utility to split your signal. Put Trackspacer on both channels. Have the lead vocal sidechain the mid and the backing vocals sidechain the sides. Then use another M/S utility to recombine the signal.

Maybe a dumb question, bit of a noob, but... Do you recommend rendering the instrumental tracks down to stereo separately and adding the lead vocal track later, or did you do that here merely for the purposes of this demonstration? I really like your vids, btw. Especially the fact that you tend to get right to the point without spending an endless amount of time "introducing" the topic.

this kind of trick is generally used for more compressed kind of music like house or modern mainstream music or other stuff like this, you know...if you're mixing on more acoustic and dynamic music like soul music or other stuff of this kind, i think it's better to mix the vocals in the same project of the instrumental...my 2 cents

Apologies if this is a stupid question (although I personally believe no question is stupid). I am a relative newbie, and I just wondered will this work also for a Choir? I am having issues with a Choir in the mix just crucifying everything else from the Orchestral side/drums etc. I have tried a few different things, and about to try this method. Thanks for your Videos, straight to the point and VERY useful. thanks.

So I love using Waves' C6 plugin, but anytime I watch a tutorial or masterclass that includes the FabFilter Pro MB it just looks like it was meant to be in your arsenal of plugins! However, I'm curious as to what the biggest difference is when using a MB Compressor vs a Dynamic EQ? I've tried and tested both of them on my mixes and I can clearly hear a difference after trying similar settings around the same frequency ranges. Obviously the MBC compresses, but I can still get great and similar sound out of a Dynamic EQ when used in its place. Of course it doesn't give that same compression effect, but you still get a groove out of it. So back to my question: What is the biggest difference? Am I missing out on some secret sauce when I reach for my Pro Q 3 in Dynamic Mode (on a mix or as a sidechain) instead of a multiband compressor, or is it really more of what sounds good to you (me in this case lol)? Should I stop overthinking it or am I wrong in my assessment of how the MBC works in comparison to a dynamic EQ? p.s. (example): I'll sometimes use a Pro Q with a dynamic point on my sub lows before putting it through a mix bus compressor or MBC. Am I doing too much by applying this process? Like I've said before, it sounds good to my ears but I don't have a whole lot of trustworthy ears around for me to ask for feedback on a mix without receiving feedback on the song itself. Like I'll get feedback along the lines of "yeah I think it's a good song" rather than "it's a little harsh around 4.5kHz" lol. Thanks for reading!
