Baby led weaning is an extremely popular method for introducing solids. But it's not as simple as just giving your baby anything you're eating. There are many really common foods that actually present a significant choking risk for babies that you should never give them.
In this video, you'll learn about 6 seemingly innocent foods that you should never give a baby when baby led weaning (or at any time). You'll learn why these foods are a hazard for BLW, so you can also avoid other foods that may pose a similar risk due to their size, shape and/or texture.
I hope this one helps you on your baby-led weaning journey!

None of these foods surprises me, but I prefer to stick to spoon feeding for my 6 month-old son anyway, because it is better to be safe than sorry. I am a first time mom at the age of 40, so I am not risking anything that may harm my beloved baby.

The point is that spoon feeding is not innately safer. Feeding purées is the easy way of introducing new foods but unless you’re blending different varieties yourself, baby is limited to the flavors sold in stores and also not getting the different textures involved with actually eating food.

What's wrong with just puree everything until they get teeth? And who gives babies hotdogs? They're full of chemicals. I just don't get it.
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard Жыл бұрын
You can definitely start with puréed food and use the traditional approach of spoon feeding. When you follow this approach by 8-9 months they are eating a mixture of food from a spoon (mashed in consistency) as well as safe finger foods. Doing this ensures their oral motor skills develop and they happily eat a variety of textures. There is a risk if you only give them purees for their first year of life they may find different textures challenging.

I was wondering if you have any advice on how to properly introduce nuts to a baby at a young age. Since nut butters can be a choling hazard, I was wondering if there are any other ways to efficiently introduce nuts to a baby?
@MiVidaBellisima
@MiVidaBellisima Ай бұрын
I add water or milk to the peanut butter to thin it out. It should be a thin texture that slides off the spoon so you know it will slide down their throat, not get stuck like thick undiluted peanut butter. You can also add it to a cream of wheat, rice cereal, etc. there’s also almond milk for tree nuts.

What is the point of this way of introducing solid foods to babies? What was wrong with introducing /feeding soft cereals, mushy foods, etc. until babies had teeth? Just seems dangerous. Why would you want to take a chance of a child choking or gagging? I just don’t get it.

Do you have anything on getting baby to look up? This includes in sitting. I joke that our 6month old’s cheeks weigh her down.
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard Жыл бұрын
I don’t have a video on this. But you can use toys to motivate your little one to look up. Just hold the toy directly in front of your baby and then move it straight up above their head. Make sure you wiggle the toy and make the toy make some noises as this will grab your little one’s attention. What you should see is your little one lifting their head and looking up to follow the toy.

Bananas... I have seen some moms give a whole peeled banana, similar to sausage... or cut up into discs... both pose choking risks... There was an incident in our city where a child lost his life due to a banana, mom sent as snack to school 🙁🙁😔

@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard Жыл бұрын
Some babies just don’t take to food straight away. The best thing to do is continue offering her food without the pressure to eat and also let her touch and play with the food (if you aren’t already). You could also think about the timing that you are offering food. At this point you would generally be offering food after a feed but at 9 months you can swap to offering it before a feed. This might mean that she will eat more simply because she is hungry. I hope that helps!
@abigailloar956

Honestly, mine mostly played with food. I even let him play with the purees and make a big mess and it payed off. He eventually started putting it in his mouth and loving it. I think it just takes them time to get over the textures. Playing with it helps with that.

why to bother just give babies puree or porridges. I don’t understand this trend of weaning now. I my childhood my mom was giving me porridge and puree and later when I was a toddler offered me solid food
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience. As you have mentioned there are lots of different methods to introducing solids to a baby. These include the traditional spoon feeding approach which starts with puréed food and progresses to finger food by 9 months and BLW which starts with finger foods. What’s important is parents choose the method which suits their family best and spend the time educating themselves on how to do each method safely.

Agree, it adds stress and difficulty with no proven benefits. Just introduce solid foods when they are better equipped to chew. Porridge and purees first.
@ElizabethChronis
@ElizabethChronis Жыл бұрын
We do it because it’s less effort for me. It’s minimal changes to our cooking processes & our kids eat most of what we eat. I don’t have to maintain a pantry of special food (like purées) or spend additional time preparing & giving babies food. I can sit baby in a high chair with snacks (like leftovers) while I cook dinner & talk to them so they are occupied/less grumpy. As a bonus, it gives them a little more independence & free will around what/how much they eat. I know it doesn’t work for everyone, but it works great at our house.

@@Jogilusz Why do you want to introduce peanuts?
@Jogilusz
@Jogilusz Жыл бұрын
@@sherrioliver5083 Well my pediatrician advised it and also there was a study that came out this year, that if peanuts are introduced to a baby 4-6 months of age, the likelyhood of them developing a peanut alergy drops by 77%. Since peanut alergies are usually for life (unlike cow milk protein or egg alergies in babies that they mostly outgrow) and can be deadly, I think it's worth a shot. My baby is alergic to almonds (almond oil used on skin) so I was, as you can imagine, very apprehensive in giving her peanuts, but the pediatrician said peanuts are not nuts anyway, they are legumes, so I shouldn't worry. I still haven't given her any and am looking for a safe way to do so. What would you suggest?
@sherrioliver5083
@sherrioliver5083 Жыл бұрын
@@Jogilusz I don’t think peanuts are good for humans at all so we don’t eat them. They are often contaminated with aflatoxin and are full of lectins and many other anti nutrients that are difficult to remove. They are just not worth it to me.😌
