We do it a lot differently in the PNW. We put out fenders, have lines fastened to the boat and ready, and a boat hook on standby. Certainly not as cool looking as you Miami beautiful people, but we probably have a lot less gouges and scratches on our boats.

Been boating for decades and in FL for >30 years and I NEVER do it the way you see on these videos. Lines, fenders, and crew prepped well-before reaching the dock, and NO ONE disembarks until the boat is tied up to the dock. When single-handing, the first line over is the midships.

@RudyF6 there was one single boater that I remember in all of BG's videos - EVER, where he slid up to the dock in a controlled approach, and flipped his midships line over a piling, back to his boat cleat, and tied off. It did entertain me... even though it was an FWC Officer, single-handing. But you are correct... if it bleeds, it leads! 😅

Or only rarely is anyone ready with the lines to secure the boat to the dock. It's not rocket science. When I was young my Dad had a 17' sailboat. Everyone was expected to participate in sailing. Anyone thinking they were just along for the ride would be swiftly disabused of that notion.

My funniest boating in incident was while stationed in IN. Someone rented an old wooden cabin cruiser and was out on this lake. The bottom of the boat failed, and they started to take on lots of water. This boat was an inboard model. They rammed the swimming beach to keep it from sinking completely. Later a wrecker showed up on the beach, ran cables under and around the back of the boat, to drag it fully up on the beach. The cables sliced right thru the back of the boat. They then placed large boards under the cables to spread out the load. On the next pull, the whole rear of the boat collapsed under the pressure of the cables and boards. They pulled the severely damaged boat up onto the beach, completely destroying it in the process.

Why-O-why don't more people do this when one end of the boat is attached to the dock to bring the other end in? It seems like such a simple thing.

If you put the engine in gear with the engine, drives, or rudder in the wrong direction you want to go, the boat will go the wrong way. By that time it’s usually too late to correct it. “N” put the wheel in the general direction, bump in and out of gear, to maintain a slow speed. making small adjustments to direction. My boat idle’s around 5-6 miles an hour. You wouldn’t pull a car in a parking spot going that fast. There are no brakes. So you have to anticipate the speed ahead of time by removing the power. Shifting to N. By the time you are near the dock you should be in N, and slowly drifting into it so your crew (line in hand) can casually grab an upright and step onto the dock.

Thats a new way if taking up 2 docks at the same time.. In canada we need to take a boater safety class in order to get a boat operators license . doesnot however make us any smarter at the docks. We have the same problem it appears.
