You may be thinking that there's no way to get someone to go to rehab, because "they have to want it for themselves". But, that's not exactly true. In this video, you'll discover 3 different ways to talk someone into going to rehab (addiction treatment).

About Me:
Personal Experience:
I grew up in an addicted family. In fact, it would be way easier for me to tell you who wasn't addicted versus who was addicted. Seriously, I have absolutely no memories of my grandmother without a glass of vodka in her hand. My mother died due to her addiction to methamphetamines. I've had countless addicted step-parents, and my older sister has struggled with serious (life-destroying) addiction for as long as I can remember.
All that being said, I always felt I had a great and loving family. My sister and I spent every summer swimming in my grandmother's pool. (the grandmother who struggled with alcoholism). We called her Mimi, and she was great. My mom was attractive and very creative, not to mention lots of fun!
Growing up like this gives me a unique perspective on addiction. I can know that someone is struggling with addiction but still see their wonderful qualities.
Professional qualifications:
After graduating from counselor school in 2004, I worked in a private psychiatric hospital for 10 years. This facility provided acute care (short term) for serious mental health and Substance Use Disorders. I learned a LOT from my experience working in a psychiatric hospital.
I got to see and treat almost every type of mental health and addiction issue you can think of, but it felt like a revolving door. I'd see the same people come in over and over and their families were absolutely desperate for help.
Unfortunately, the system isn't set up to help families in general. Knowing what it's like to live with addiction, I was all the more frustrated.
All this led to me deciding to leave the hospital and start my own addiction treatment center, specializing in addicted family systems.
Over the years, I had developed lots of good relationships with other clinicians, and I knew who was the best! I put together a superstar team, and we now run out own outpatient addiction treatment practice called Hope For Families Recovery Center.
We've worked very hard not to tie ourselves to the "big system." We don't work for the insurance companies. We don't work for a hospital system, We don't answer to anyone except our clients, their families, and the licensing boards that provide us with our professional license. We have all Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC)-(which is mental health counselors) and also Licensed Addiction Counselors (LAC).
We don't provide inpatient treatment, but we do partner with a phenomenal sober living facility called Greenville Transitions. They offer top-notch sober living care for young men in the early stages of recovery. www.greenville...

Hello from France, I love your videos, the no-nonsense approach and absence of judgment on all sides really is a blessing! That's why I'd like to ask you this question: my partner is addicted to alcohol and also uses marijuana and cocaine problematically, he is not in denial at all and we often have long, reasoned out discussions about his issues and what he is going to do about it. The problem is, he never actually puts his money where his mouth is, he can even detail a really great recovery plan with a glass of liquor in one hand and a joint in the other. He also has trouble making appointments but doesn't want me to help him (and I respect that, I just give him info). He actually takes steps to go see a counselor or contact a rehab centre once every couple of weeks but always gives up halfway through (whilst talking about the issue relatively rationally as I said above). Could you help me understand why this is the case?
@PutTheShovelDown
@PutTheShovelDown 2 жыл бұрын
He has has the substance, his body is calm enough to think rationally. It's during this time that he knows something needs to change. When he's not using, he's in withdrawal and it's hard to think straight.

Thank you for this! What method do you think works best for people who aren’t exactly pro therapy or pro counseling? My SO has said many times he doesn’t think therapy would help him for mental health at all even though he knows he needs to cut down drinking.

Pot is no good either, it can bring someone way down in addiction just as much as any other drug can, it's very addictive and mentally harmful to those who are pronned to mental health conditions

I think I'm doing something similar with my SO. We have agreed to an over night so we can have Christmas morning with the baby. I know staying sober for him will be really, REALLY hard. He offered to go to a neighbors house (for our safety/comfort) to spend the night if he just couldn't NOT drink. My first reaction was, "If you're leaving, why are we here?" but then I realized 2 things. 1)he was taking US into account for once, and 2) HE made the plan. So I decided that we would stay to help reinforce that as a POSITIVE step (him thinking about us for once). Am I on the right track? Is that similar to what you were talking about? Any other advice? Thank you for all that you do! For myself, but much more so for his son.

I am actually curious, have you ever encountered families or spouses, who are just content with the addiction? That it is a "normal" part of life, instead of something needed to be changed?
@PutTheShovelDown
@PutTheShovelDown 4 жыл бұрын
A. Ye most definitely! We’ve seen it all, but those types situations are the worst. It’s almost impossible to get someone clean in that circumstance.

@@PutTheShovelDown I mean, are the addicts happy in those situations? If they are truly happy and content with it, why change?

@@PutTheShovelDown have you seen addicts who are just content being an addict? Like they rather just put up with the addiction for as long as their life is, instead of changing?
@PutTheShovelDown
@PutTheShovelDown 4 жыл бұрын
A. Ye yes, I’ve seen that but it’s usually because they either don’t realize how much better they’ll feel without it, or they’re scared of getting clean, or they think they’re so bad off that they will never be able to get sober.
