I post new love life advice for you every weekend.

I’m about to share a recent public moment that bothered me . . .
While watching a video clip from my recent appearance on the Pretty Intense podcast with Danica Patrick-an experience I thoroughly enjoyed-I couldn’t help but notice something: I kept saying a particular word. And not just once or twice. Over the course of just a couple minutes, I couldn’t even keep my total in the single digits (and you can see the final staggering tally for yourself in this video).
As someone who’s spent an entire career in public speaking and content creation, the more I said this word, the more the demons in my mind went into “media frenzy press conference mode.”
Prepare yourself: This video is an honest reenactment of how embarrassment plays out in our heads.
I hope this gives you a laugh and also helps you realize that you can take something like this and use it to turn a mortifying moment into an opportunity for growth

John 15:11-14 (KJV) These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

Great, great video! Very, very helpful! But I gotta say- I’m born and raised in Cali, so I don’t hear the “like” word, the same way most non- California people do.… So, all those “likes” don’t appear on my radar! His tone, his cadence, his everything else speaks in the foreground. He lives here, right? Well, the “like” word comes with the territory, unless you make a real effort to suppress it. 🥴 Thanks again for this one.

This video proves how genuine you and your content are! Seriously, soooo many people on KZbin have been creating content on communication skills, personality development, confidence, and mental health. But Matthew, you are one of the rare people who confidently addressed the topic of "embarrassment" and "mental demons" as you rightly mentioned. Have been following your content since a very long time and will continue to do so! Stay the way you are! Kudos ❤️❤️❤️.

Matthew 6:27-30 (KJV) Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

UGH those negative spiral demon thoughts! As much as I know whenever I catch myself on that downward spiral, it takes so much habit breaking to get myself out of it! It. is. so. tiring. Another note, you made me laugh big time when you became aware and started counting 'like'. My English High School teacher taught me those are thinking word breaks and most humans automatically ignore/don't hear them when we/others speak (words like "but, um, like"). But the really funny thing is once we notice it we can't UNnotice them on anyone! My teacher got me to stop using word breaks by throwing a wine cork at us whenever we used them! Did the trick I guess hahaha

This is exactly what I needed to hear right now! I just completed a course in Advocacy for the Disabled (just came home from our graduation luncheon a couple of hours ago!) I plan to start a nonprofit serving the homeless with disabilities. This will involve, in part, public speaking and giving testimonies and presentations to legislators--as well as presentations for raising awareness and for fundraising. One of my disabilities is Social Anxiety Disorder, wheee! I'm going to die a thousand deaths to do this, but I've gotta work around my fears if I want to make this work, if I really want to serve a grossly underserved population. We talked about presentation anxiety in class, and this video is rounding things out for me. Good tips! I'm putting this video on my "nonprofit tutorials" playlist, thank you!

Actually, I haven't noticed the frequency of the word "like" until Matthew pointed it out in this video too. 😀 It just means that it was not annoying enough to me to be focused on that 😀. As far as speaking English is concerned, as a non-native speaker myself, you know what they say "Practice makes perfect". It's important to extend your vocabulary by reading. The 30-day challenge, the 5th challenge to be exact, is a perfect occasion to do that- that is what I decided to do in this round; each day, I look for at least one new, unknown English word and try to memorise it and use it afterwards. 😀 Maybe you can try this approach in the next round of the 30-day challenge, and your vocabulary will slowly but steadily expand. 😉

Every body make mistakes. We are not perfect. We just have to remind ourselfes that we are human beings. I always judge myself so much harder than I lately think other people judge me. I think lot of people do the same and overanalize themselfs, and surly they find something that they can name as a mistake. Because we go sooo deep in the analisation till we don't find. Or am I the only one with this?

It’s disheartening to realize how many people think that they need to self-monitor/correct non-moral elements of their lives in order to be acceptable to other equally flawed human beings. I guess the good news, if you choose to go the performance route, is that it’s something that can be learned and not something that’s inherent to anyone.

I understand nervousness and could see a bit overenthuasm in that interview. The thing with the word like is practice. But I rather have an authentic speaker, especially one that doesn't hold back swear words, and is genuine than an over practiced person that reaches for perfection. It's easy to lose yourself in that. Some people watch so many self help and sales or strategic books they don't learn to apply these things, they become these things. Huge difference! Why it's a slippery slope and why often strategies don't work anymore. I think your success came from authenticity but also giving exact scenarios, examples people could see a concept applied. OR my favorite: the best answers or replies when.... the hard questions we don't always know how to reply to. The sneaky ways men will use that mostly either leave us looking prude, boring or bitter, or fall for it earning zero respect. You had awesome examples in the past. I believe it was the response to a nude pic request or so. It was a radio interview. Quite a whole ago.

I noticed the woman listening had a certain judgmental look to her body language it was like she was like judging you. Ive noticed when i m talking to people who appear to be judging me or other people, i lose my focus on what I'm trying to communicate and make mistakes in my way of expressing myself.

@@xdxdxdxd4575 i was told by a world famous speaker that the trick is to only use one criteria for judging ones own speaking content...do you find it very interesting..? Then if the other person doesn't something is up with that person and not with ones own content.. so we have to stay focused by staying interested, by being interested in what we are communicating ..the idea being that as we are more similar than different to others so therefore if we find something very interesting most other people will also... and therefore judgement from others we must assume is related to things outside of our content /control.. ...unless we aren't interested in what we are talking about. Is that clear

The scenario in this video is exactly what makes me cringe about myself the most! I'm a journalist and I interview a lot of people, and when I transcribe them, listening back to the audio, I hear myself say "like" a ludicrous number of times just within one question. I somehow still have an over decade long career doing this though so it must not have affected my reputation too much!
