Hey! I’m actually making a video on this topic soon! But in short, anything that will allow you to experience the medical field (scribing, research assistant, etc.) are always great options if they’re available

Answer these next 2 questions: what is the maximum you personally are taking out in student loans per year? can it exceed $80,000 or not? That’s $320,000 before tuition gets taken off.
@JenCheng14 жыл бұрын
The Fee Assistance Program only helps a little...how would you endure four years of medical school and paying the rent each month? Can you help me out and tell me how it is you are paying the rent portion?
@EvolvingMedic4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jen Cheng! Great question! So student loans are given to not only account for tuition, but also cost of living (rent, food, etc.). In my case, my wife works, so our family has a source of income, but we still take out a small loan to cover other expenses. The financial aid office at every medical school should be able to walk you through the cost of tuition (taking into account any scholarship awards) as well as other expected costs, and then every semester you are given a loan (presuming that you would like to take out a loan) that covers all of that. This of course is something you have to pay back with interest, so you should take out as little as possible. But there are funds given to you so that all you have to worry about it school 😊. I hope this helps!

The Fee Assistance Program only helps a little...so how would you endure four years of medical school debt and paying the rent each month? Can you help me out and tell me how it is you are paying the rent portion? That I would really like to know. Are any of your parents helping you out with the $800 or so of rent each month?
@EvolvingMedic4 жыл бұрын
My parents do not help with any expenses, but student loans take into account living expenses as well and will cover tuition, housing, food, etc. My wife also works so we have a steady source of income that helps. But for student where this is not the case, student loans are in place so you don’t have to worry about costs of living while in medical school (though we will have to worry about repaying these loans afterward so borrow responsibly!). I recommend speaking with your schools financial aid department for more details on this and to set up a plan that works best for you
@JenCheng14 жыл бұрын
@@EvolvingMedic But what if it's living in NYC or LA then it's $3,000 a month RENT!! What do you do then?
@EvolvingMedic4 жыл бұрын
Lol your loan will consider all of this Jen. And if cost of living is a very important factor for you, I would just consider that when you’re choosing which schools to apply to
@EvolvingMedic4 жыл бұрын
But again, I suggest speaking directly with the financial aid office of the schools you interview at. Then you will have specific information for your particular situation and with that information you will be able to make an appropriate decision. But to sum up an answer to your questions, student loans are for paying for tuition AND cost of living. You don’t need a source of income to be a medical student. Most do not. It’s just about how much of a loan you will have to take out and based on your situation and your preferences, this will look different for everyone. But you will have funds to go to school and survive in medical school either way lol
@JenCheng14 жыл бұрын

Evolving Medic I am a French Canadian so we only have 3 francophone medical schools where I live. Here in Quebec we have what we call CEGEP that you need to attend for 2-3 years between high school and university. To get in med school, they first of all look at your R score (a complex score /50 that basically evaluates your performance based on other people and your program's difficulty). Then, if you have a high enough R score, you can be invited to interviews, but you only need to do 1 interview because the 3 schools share the results. They send their offers based on your R score and your interviews (50%-50%). No need for CV or anything else. This year, interviews were cancelled because of Covid-19 so we had to take the Casper test, which is basically a personnality test used for programs like medicine, pharmacy, nursing, etc (maybe you already know what it is). The offers are sent on the same date and at the same time for all of the schools (this year, it was May 13th at 4pm). This is a very brief resume of the application process, there are a lot more differences haha! sorry for my English, as I said I am a French Canadian 😅
@EvolvingMedic4 жыл бұрын

Does medical school send out interviews invitations during your 3rd year or 4th year of undergrad? So if i applied in the summer of my junior year will i get invites by the winter of that year? Im still kind of confused on the timeline for applications...
@EvolvingMedic4 жыл бұрын
Good question! Interview invitations are sent out starting in August/September for most schools. The earliest most people apply is the summer between junior and senior year. That would mean interview invitations would be sent out starting in the fall semester of your senior year and interviews run until February/March for some schools. So your interview season would span your senior year if you applied in the summer between junior and senior year. I hope this helps!

I see that you got accepted into Emory and that’s the medical school I want to get into. If you could give me some tips on how to get in and what my MCAT score needs to be. Also what my GPA should and what extracurricular activities you recommend. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you and good luck.

Hello, thanks for reaching out! In my last video I discuss how to determine what MCAT score you need using the MSAR. I would recommend finding the statistics for Emory on the MSAR and setting the median score as the one you want to hit. I will be discussing things like GPA and extracurriculars in the next few videos of this Medical School Application playlist. Hopefully this playlist will give you all the tools needed to get into the school that’s best for you! 🙌🏽

What is the best pre med major for medical school
@EvolvingMedic4 жыл бұрын
I can honestly say there is no single best pre med major. One doesn’t look better than the other. I’d recommend pursuing what interests you. Then you’ll do better in those courses and enjoy them at the same time. Some of the most competitive applicants have non-science majors and this is interesting to medical school committee members. At the same time, if biochemistry or other science courses interest you most, go for those! They’ll do a great job at preparing you for some of the classes you’ll have during the first year of medical school. So I would just say pursue your interests! I hope this helps!

It ain’t cheap to be going to medical school. Besides the tuition, how do you fare paying the rent each month, especially if it’s in NYC or LAX? They’re like around $2,500+ each month. I feel like med students contributes the most to our US economy, borrowing and lending $250,000 and that’s just from one person. Who pays for YOUR rent and boarding and food and car payments?

I will be sharing my stats in my upcoming medical school application playlist, starting with my MCAT score in a video dropping this Saturday. But I can assure you my stats are not mind blowing at all.

You most have a perfect MCAT and gpa 😂
@EvolvingMedic4 жыл бұрын
Hahaha they’re actually not too great. Far from the ridiculous averages that some of these schools have. I’ll actually go over my application in a future video so you can see first hand what my gpa and MCAT scores were.
