thanks for these interesting videos. could you provide some help to people away from US? I have a johnson seahorse 25 hp outboard of 1980 rope start. it is equipped with a flywheel of 74 tooth. I would like to upgrade it to a electric starter. I am confused with the starters available in the market as they have 9, 10 and 11 tooth pinions. how to solve this technical problem. what pinion fits the 74 tooth flywheel?

Hi! Awesome video! I was just wondering I have the same motor and starter motor as you but my starter motor is doing what your's was doing not spinning the flywheel. how did you fix this? Mine keeps arking out even tho it's earthed exactly how yours is? I'm not using a relay just straight from the battery to the starter motor
@mbrenengen4 жыл бұрын
Hook jumper cables directly to the starter first, then hook the ground to the negative battery and last try touching the positive end to the positive post on the battery. It sounds like you just don't have a good connection.

Matthew Brenengen so the throttle can cause it not to power up. Someone one told me that's it's the sensor. But I don't know which one

I ordered a new solenoid and noticed i ordered a Tilt and Trim Solenoid instead of a starter motor Solenoid. Can the tilt and trim Solenoid be used as a starter motor solenoid
@mbrenengen3 жыл бұрын
No. The starter solenoid is designed for lots more amps.

@@mbrenengen sorry to bother you again. My new starter solenoid worked perfect for 2 x 6 hour trips. During a 15 mile trip on the way back the starter motor stayed on Spinning even when the key wasnt turned or in. The only way i got the engine to start was to stop the starter motor by removing the power wire from the solenoid to the starter motor and then touching it while turning the key then removing the power cable again. Have you any idea why?

A little confused, not really explained what cables are connected to the battery itself during these different scenarios..just asking because my ignition switch is broke at the moment but I still want to check out the components of the starting system..thanks
@jeffgallant97036 жыл бұрын
I know my battery is good because its new..I have a jumpstart booster kit...almost the same as yours..then what can to get it to turn over??
@mbrenengen6 жыл бұрын
Sure. Look at 1:16. That white wire connected to the top of the square box goes directly to the positive battery post. At 1:47, you can see a thick black wire that is on a stud secured with a nut to the block of the motor. That goes to the negative post. Your switch would send 12vdc through that thin wire I am holding at 1:32 when you turn the key. You can "hotwire" it by taking a wire from the positive battery post and just touching the other end to where that little wire connects. It will turn over, but not start if the key if off because it is grounding out the coils in that position. Let me know if you have other questions.
@jeffgallant97036 жыл бұрын
so to clarify... You can "hotwire" it by taking a wire from the positive battery post and just touching the other end to where that little wire connects. Do you mean a "jumper cable" touching the positive on the battery with the positive still hooked up to the solenoid and touch the other end of the jumper cable to the end of the thin wire where it connects on the ignition wire bundle ("little wire connects.")???
@jeffgallant97036 жыл бұрын
BTW I believe my old motor is the exact same one!
@mbrenengen6 жыл бұрын
Yes. What is happening is that when you put 12v+ to the solenoid it creates an electric magnet that closes an iron bar across two points, allowing the big 12v+ (lots of amps) to flow to the starter. You just need a small wire, however (small amps), to get the bar to close the connection.
@phillipkelly46865 жыл бұрын
Looking at your solenoid you need to put a boat solenoid on that and not a car solenoid because it can cause a spark between those two points and burn your motor up there is a big difference between a boat solenoid and a car solenoid it has a plastic cover not a shiny metal one

@@mbrenengen thanks. Just a quick question - i used a multimeter on my battery, solenoid and starter motor which all gave the same 12.56V but when i turn my key the solenoid just clicks. Do you have any idea why
@mbrenengen3 жыл бұрын
@@ANDYYSHAWW118 You can get 12.5 volts but no amps from a bad battery. Try another battery. You should also try bypassing the solenoid like I do on the video.
@ANDYYSHAWW1183 жыл бұрын
@@mbrenengen i bought a new battery and NOCO jump starter. I tried the new battery with no change. Did you use the jumper to bypass the solenoid by using your jump starter positive onto the Starter Motor etc or do you use the battery. Thanks again for the help
@mbrenengen3 жыл бұрын
@@ANDYYSHAWW118 You have to use the battery. The jump pack has something in it that won't send any juice if it doesn't sense any voltage.
@AmericanConstellation5 жыл бұрын
Not to be mean...but I've seen so many of these videos...Why do people twist wrenches and try to fix outboards when the the outboard is in the water?! The thing is broken...Why make things worse by dropping things into the water? Pull it out on dry land...fix it and you're good!
