Getting back into Sculpting: Arachnarok and Super Sculpey for Warhammer and Dungeons and Dragons

It’s time I got back into sculpting and making monster. I found some of my old sculpey clay i’ve had for over ten years and had not used. I couldn’t let good material go to waste. instead of sculpting something on the simpler side i decided to jump into deep waters and sculpt an Arachnarok from warhammer. Ill be using this for my Dungeons And Dragons games.

Probably the coolest thing you have ever made. For the spikes and other sharp parts you could use an epoxy putty, maybe even greenstuff, which would likely stand up to the curing temperature of the sculpey. You could theoretically have cast this before you attached the legs!

Franky I really dig your style of crafting. Other table top crafters are dark with minimal color and thats great but it's extremely refreshing to see your projects with the deep and vibrant colors "CARTOONY" as you put it. I personally love the CARTOONY effect you create in your models. It visually kickstarts my imagination allowing me to fully immerse myself into the narration. So keep up the amazing work and we'll see you on the other side.

At first I was thinking crab but as you went along it was like ok that's one crazy looking spider. As far as your brain fart not using the tinfoil on his bulbous behind I think that worked well. Looks like a mushy area that might be the only unprotected area on this behemoth. As far as finishing and thinking Hmmm I would of done this or that different that's a good thing that's what keeps us creating more and better creations. I imagine every artist has done this since the beginning of time. Even Leonardo must have had if only I had done this moments. Now I'm off to check out some of the other channels you named.

I've been into sculpting for a while now it's a talent didn't know I had. I started with small things Owls, Crows, sheep, flour sacks ( for my windmill) yesterday I spent most of the day sculpting those haunted trees Green stuff world sells for a fortune, I was very pleased with the outcome in fact I think mine are better because the expressions on the faces work better. I would definitely like to see more sculpting vids as it's nice to have ideas for projects going forward. I've been mostly using green stuff and Milliput and air dry, but I haven't tried any of the polymer clays yet.

Nice job frank-o, one trick I used back in the day (waaaay back) was to put oven curing clay on a hot plate with a damp towel on top of it. Yes it is reckless and dangerous and you need 5-6 towels to rotate but I swear in between working on pieces they dry hard as nails. Also wanted to mention the vallejo neon paints if you want crazy contrast and using a high gloss varnish when ur done painting, letting it dry and then hitting with a flat or satin varnish to finish. Your figure will be super durable and have the finish you’re going for. Keep it up champ.

Great video, great sculpt, cool paint job. My favorite part is your note that people are welcome to like what they like and the world is better for it. I'm a relatively new subscriber. Your sculpting is much better than mine, but I've been using polymer clay for a month or two (that's my pandemic windfall: more time to craft). A couple of quick notes: 1) you absolutely can bake acrylic paints (google will lead you to people baking it a *much* higher temps than you need to rebake clay). 2) you can also re-bake your clay. 3) two other advantages of polymer clay over air-dry which you'll discover as you continue working with it: polymer clay doesn't air-dry, so you can keep working and reworking it for a long time - weeks, even. I have a piece I keep by my work keyboard with some tools, on which I "doodle" during long conference calls. Also, it's just fundamentally less messy to work with. Air-dry clay sticks to everything, including my fingers. Again, great video, and yes, I think we'd all like to see more exploration of how to sculpt. Your idea of using a heat gun to partially stabilize some parts while you're still working on it is brilliant. And I look forward to the results of your tests of varying baking temperatures (and times?) on strength.

@@FrankyDCrafter Cool - add this, then. Always experiment first: do a couple of small pieces, and prove to yourself that your oven, your heat, your paints, and maybe even your brand of clay all work together, and that for example, your primer doesn't react badly.

your aesthetic rocks, great colours as always. My only criticism would have been to have raised the two front legs off the ground up into the air to give more aggressive dynamism to the pose which is a little static. However considering all the learning curves with the new medium and the stunning armour and bulk I'm only being a pedant! You invoke a delightful old school style which is so refreshing from all the 'grim dark' palettes out there. Rock on.

well a colorful giant spider is a lot more terrifying than one with regular colors. since strong colors in nature usually means a poisonous or venomous animal. now it being poisonous just makes the whole setting a ton more scary, because that means there exists even bigger monsters that easily hunt these giant spiders. and please make a few sculpting tutorials. always wanted to try it out properly

I love your cartoony style to be honest, I paint in a Hammer horror style the darks are very dark and the reds are very red the blues very blue etc ( I tin you need to watch and Old Hammer movie to get what I mean it's real but not real) I also am influenced by Ray Harryhausen's movies and the Old universal monster movies ( again great for shadows and exaggerated highlights) at first I was irritated that I couldn't get my stuff to look like the standard D&D Warhammer style. until a few people pointed out they actually liked what I do ( in fact I didn't realise I was doing it until a felow classic horror movie buff pointed it out to me then it was as obvious as the nose on my face) so I've actually learned to love my style and rather than try to steer away from it as I was.
