For those applying from Sept 2016 onward, the BMAT is no longer required for entry onto any RVC programme

Hi tam would you still consider doing a personal statement video? I would really love one, I’m applying for university this year 😁🤞 also would you mind sharing the ethical question you had about kidney transplant? Thanks ❤️

Hey tam. I am currently in y12 and looking to apply for vet med. I have seen on the uni websites that 4 weeks work experience is the minimum and that more than 6 gives no advantage. I’m not 100% but I just wouldn’t want it to stress others
@LifeftT6 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the uni, i know that when i applied RVC and Surrey wanted 6 and cambridge said at vet cam that they wanted 4 because of the access to farms being difficult. I decided i wanted to be a vet in year 11 and did the 4 weeks in practice and 4 weeks animal work in that year but obviously not everyone has the opportunity. It basically gave me some more to put in my personal statement and talk about at interview when the asked the work experience related questions. I also thing it helped me be sure that it was what I wanted to do. I can't say whether doing 8 rather than 6 gave me any more advantage other than experience and talking points because you never know for certain why you were chosen, but I do think it helped me and I was able to write about the variety of things id experienced in my statement. Good luck with your application!

Thank you so much for this Tam, I applied this year and had my RVC interview today. I have an offer from Liverpool and an interview at Nottingham in February. The application process is probably the hardest for vet med, would love to know your opinion on the course and like a day in your life/ further insight into your workload and how you handle it. Idk why the application process has changed so much since you applied because we don’t have to do BMAT anymore, for any vet schools I think, though I know Cambridge makes you do the specific Cambridge test. Edinburgh’s grades are also AAA, Glasgow is A*AA. Good luck with becoming a vet!! Xx

omg thats amazing! RVC is quite a nice interview i found. i didn't get an interview from nottingham or bristol bc i was ill over my as levels so got B at as (although i rest and got three a). I’m watching in 2020 and heard you say that you need to do well in languages.. for my choices I decided not to do languages and rather psychology, does this matter? I’ve wanted to be a vet since I was 5/6.

I think this should be fine, Vet school just want you to display a range of skills and academia in GCSE. It shouldnt impact whether or not you get in! Good luck, I wish you the best! xx

honestly dw about that. my school has 3 mandatory humanity gcses that need to be taken: religious studies, a language & either his or geo, but i’m taking triple science, so i get to drop one as triples is worth 2 gcses, and takes up double the amount of time. just as long as you sub it for a subject you’re good at & will get high grades in it isn’t super important

I’m only 13, yeah I know kind of early to be thinking about my application but for experience where did you go? A lot of veterinary practices don’t accept work experience students in my area, do you have any other recommendations of what I could do? Also, what subjects did you take A levels in? I’m in Scotland so I don’t know how different it would be but shouldn’t be too different🐶🤞🏼
@anastasiaeves54815 жыл бұрын
So as a student who is doing her A levels, something I learnt is that often Veterinary Clinics will not accept you until you are a certain level/age. I applied for quite a few at 14 and got rejected but recently re-applied for work experience with them at 17 and most of them accepted me. Obviously look around and remember you don't need loads of weeks clinical experience so if you can at 13 I would suggest asking farms, kennels and catteries and animal rescues if you could help out? This would then gain you the other animal experience you require.
@clappedcircle53015 жыл бұрын
Samantha Thomson I’m also 13, personally for me there’s a small veterinary office nearby me so I’m very lucky to have been accepted to help there but I recommend asking a careers adviser at your school to see if they can help sort something, they can help you look for suitable place and any vacancies :)
@lxlamayw3 жыл бұрын
hey samantha :) i’m in y9, and i’m abt to do my work experience, for the RVC you need one lot medical & another non-medical. so in my new school, we have our first few weeks in year 10, and another few weeks in year 11, so i’m going to do non medical next year, and medical in year 11. some examples of non-med are: -farm work (just looking after farm animals, dairy farming, feeding etc) -dog grooming (this does a lot of the same stuff as a vet tech would do, you’ll learn how to shave & cut fur, trim claws, calm pups etc) -just anywhere that you can be around animals, so that you’re with them & spending time with them. by the time you’re in year 11, you’ll be about 16, and veterinary practices should allow you to do your WE there. good luck on your veterinary journey! 🐭💜

If the Cambridge Vet Science is research based, and Surrey is rather skill based, how about RVC? Is there any website or any source you recommend to learn the difference about each school? As there is no campus tour this year, I'll been joining online session and visiting websites, but difficult to find about the difference of each school, all of them seems to be very nice!

Hi tam I’m currently studying my GCSE’s but I know what I want to do which is to become a vet. I was wondering from looking at what it takes to do the bvet med postgraduate degree which allows you to become a vet surgeon it says you have to do one of a number of listed undergrad degrees. For me I would like to do biovet science at another uni. But you only need biology at a level and another science subject to do that degree. Is this unheard of? Would love to hear your response!
@LifeftT6 жыл бұрын
ok so... in the UK you can go straight into a BVMSci degree (UCAS code D100) that allows you to become a veterinary surgeon after 5 years of study straight from doing biology, chemistry and a third Alevel. In the USA and other countries you have to do a pre vet course for 4 years and then can move onto a vet course for 4 years, both at a university. There is no need to do another university course before doing a veterinary medicine degree. If you don't get the A level grades you can do another degree before going into vet med and biovet is one of the options. Bio vet is a 3 year course that qualifies you to be a vet nurse. hope this helped
@eliciajane015 жыл бұрын
hi :) i am currently on the 4 year graduate course at RVC after doing an undergraduate degree in biology. this route is not the easiest - the easiest way would be to do a levels and then do the normal 5 year BVetMed course. however, doing a degree first and then doing a postgraduate course afterwards is still an option. please let me know if i can help in any way or if you have any questions!

Hey, where could get experience?
@LifeftT5 жыл бұрын
Any vet practice around you is likely to take work experience students, also farms and stables are always wanting some help! if you live in a city maybe volunteer at kennels or shelter. Any animal place basically! I worked as a dog walker for a summer as well.

What college did you go to before applying to the vet schools? Also are you a undergraduate, postgraduate or are you still in school and just studying abroad?
@meganlake38504 жыл бұрын
So do gcse matter? If you don’t get the best GCSEs does that mean you can’t be a vet ?
@LifeftT4 жыл бұрын
so the vet schools will list what the requirements for GCSEs are on their websites but in general they aren't as important. I think most say you have to get a in sciences and above c in English and language. A levels are much more important.

Hey, so I am currently in year 9 and we are doing options at school, so I am doing animal management at Bishop Burton college as a vocational course, what would my next step be after my GCSE’s, as I would like to continue on at Bishop Burton and do animal management and animal care as a Btec. Unfortunately you can’t go into veterinary with a btec course unless you do an animal management science course and do a level chemistry at the same time

do you think it would matter if i only got a 6 in combined biology in gcses but then an A in alevel? and i will be taking a gap year so that i can try volunteering and things because i haven't had much opportunity due to corona.
