I think it was winter 2002 and we had a doozey storm that knocked the power out. I live in a very rural area of Central Oregon, nearest neighbor can't be seen but only a mile down the road. I ran about 5 miles out of town to my well stocked Mormon friends house for lamp oil (she taught me after how to be prepared) and stopped by another friend to check on her and her toddler and 3 day old baby. Both our husbands are truck drivers and were on the road. She took batteries out of the baby seat for a flashlight but was worried about getting cold because they did not have a wood burning stove. So an hour later they came to my house and we had a big camp out in my living room. 2 moms 5 kids one dog and a memory we will remember forever.

After the power outage last February here in TX, we finally took this seriously and got it together. I already had food storage but we found through the process that we were not prepared. We’re prepared now. We have a home safety review scheduled every quarter where we not only check all our supplies but we go through procedures on how to do things like draining the pool equipment and hooking up the generator. My husband travels for our business so we have to be ready if he’s here or not

We have multiple generators, including one that hooks up to our tractor. The larger ones, run our entire house, and require multiple steps. I asked Chris to write out directions for each one, step by step, (you can even take pictures, of certain buttons and switches, to look for), print everything out and laminate it, and attach to whatever machine you are dealing with. Chris has even recorded, a step by step video for family we have loaned generators to, so they could easily follow along, and safely operate it.

That's great. We are a little technology challenged and have our daughter walk us through solutions to get us going on our PC/Phones and write down the step-by-step method. Never know when we may need the information again. Called her a while ago and explained the problem and heard someone saying sounded just like her parents. Said they could have at least waited until we hung up, but had a laugh also.

@@carolynb1547 I recently found a great tip for that. Simply season your food AFTER cooking. If u cook your food without all of the spices, it won't be so fragrant. In MA we just had a Nor'easter and lost power for 3 days. If anyone can I strongly recommend getting a generator. We just had our electric panel updated and bought a generator a few months ago. It was so nice not to worry about the cold food and to have heat. Having canned goods on hand worked out great because we could only use the top of our gas stove without electricity. These days it's good to be prepared for anything.

We lose power sometimes and so hubby started getting ready. We have solar panels that can charge phones, emergency kits and 2 generators. The big one ran our fridge and computer. We have solar light bulbs as well. And hubby also started a garden and we have chickens so we get eggs everyday. We also have a small food stock but need to stock up so much more but just don't have the room. We're still preparing as hubby just built a brick oven and stove that runs on fire wood.

Our power was out for 14 hours due to the recent nor’easter. While I had plenty of led lanterns, I had never used my little butane stove. I was amazed at how easy it was to use. It was a good time to see what worked and what did not. Even though it was chilly in the house, I did not try my Mr. Buddy heater. I realized I should get a 12 foot hose and filter so I can use my 20 gallon propane tank. I also realized having all of my small propane bottles in the shed was not a good idea. A small tote near the back porch should house about nine of them.

If our power goes out we do have a generator, but we only use it for long emergencies. I could use the burner on the side of my bbq. We also have an outdoor burner aka fish cooker I could cook on. My husband got a Blackstone grill we could use too plus a coalman stove. If we lose power we also lose our water since we are on a well, that part sucks. Thankfully we haven't lost power for more than a few hours in this house. My mom was once out of power for almost 2 wks, she cooked steaks and such in her fireplace using a cast iron skillet. We did loan them our generator but it couldn't run everything in their house. Make sure your chickens have roosts inside the coop especially with winter coming.

We live in the boondocks of upstate ny so if we loose power we loose everything. Thank goodness I have a gas stove. Just an FYI about your freezer. Also here is a quick and easy cornchower recipe. Half pound bacon cooked crisp and crumbled set aside save half the drippings, to that add 1-2 large onions chopped, saute til translucent turn off. In separate pot peel and chop about 4-6 yellow flesh potatoes just slightly cover them with chicken stock cook til tender, DO NOT DRAIN. Add potatoes and stock to onions put on simmer, now add 3 cans whole corn juice and all and 3 cans creamed corn stir til blended add 1t pepper, then add 1 and 1/2 cups heavy cream or half and half heat but do not boil serve top with crumbled bacon! This soup is AMAZING we read it with crusty bread. Everyone asks for this recipe. I dont6 add any salt because the bacon and the stock and canned veg have salf in them you can add it either at the table or to taste while cooking. ENJOY1❤

if possible I need help buying a generator, how do you know how big or which would be good to keep the fridge and freezer running?

😋 yummy!! I don't care for mushrooms matter a fact, might be allergic to them. What could I use in place of cream of mushroom in many recipes?

I just got transition lenses when I got my new glasses. I’m near sighted, and while my prescription didn’t change, I needed new frames as they were all bent up. I could have gone with a second pair that were sunglasses, but I didn’t want to keep having to switch between the two, as I’m likely to forget or drop (or whatever).

I was taken aback to hear you say you went to Lacrosse. I live near La Crosse, WI and did not know there was a Lacrosse, UT!! LOL

I caught the interview with Denise Jordan and I loved it!! Denise is a great friend and has been a mentor to me!! Also, I didn't realize there was an egg shortage here in Maine! But the stores will randomly not have certain things but then another will. For example, no Del Monte Corn for the longest time at my normal grocery store but then tons of it at Sam's Club! So I am learning to shop around AND stock up!

A question for the “She’s in Her Apron” family: I’m a bit confused about what is and is not safe in the house for warmth and cooking. Can you safely use Buddy heaters in the house for warmth? Also, can a butane camping cook stove be used in the house? Is it just that you need to have a carbon monoxide detector…. is that enough? I’m a bit confused by what I’m reading on different sites. I want to invest in some preps. I want to make a safe decision.

I giggled so hard when that family passed you by while you were vlogging!😆 I've been in that same situation, videoing something for my Facebook page! Glad your power went back on quickly. Great Wal-Mart haul girl, I'm getting some of that hummus myself! It's so good!

Mainer here! I did notice my local WM was low last week but I didn't need any so wasn't really paying attention to how low it was. I'll be back there tomorrow and will check it out!

I stir my eggs in the pan too so I don't dirty up another dish, lol! Also thank you for using a plastic spatula. The sound of metal utensils on metal pan is like nails on a chalkboard. YIKES
