Dear Mary Barbera, First of all, a big thank you for your commitment and effort. As the mother of a 4.5-year-old son with autism, it is an incredible relief to have informative videos that make working with the child easier and supportive. I bought your book Turn Autism Around, am right in the middle of it and am overwhelmed by what you are sharing with us. At the age of 3.5, my son was diagnosed with the comment that he had a mild form and had to undergo the standard therapies. We started immediately and also see huge differences compared to last year. At 3.5 he was diaper-free, he now also speaks (has a large vocabulary). Of course, the communicative should improve, but he tells when he needs to pee or is hungry, etc. He has no fear of contact, listens to his name, follows instructions, goes to an inclusive kindergarten... However, he is sometimes at a loss when it comes to playing goes (with me or peers) every time I take his things, such as his car, drive it and make noises about it, he takes the things from my hand, blocks them and says no games..or if I try to show him a deck of cards or Board game or handicraft painting, he just blocks and I'm totally at a loss as to what to do. Funnily enough, he's really motivated with his therapists and does quite well, but when he's with me he's dismissive. Can you give me a few tips on how to improve his play skills? Do I find suggestions in your book? Or in your videos? Thank you very much for your answer and greetings from Munich/ Germany

I've never met a 3.5 year old who wants to play board games or cards. I'd say he's blocking you out because you're telling him there's a right or wrong way to play. Play is supposed to be fun- what is fun to him? How does he naturally play? Instead of telling him to play your way try playing his or parallel play- do your own thing close by.

I fought for years to get my son evaluated and diagnosed which lead to my own diagnosis at 30. We both have an "aspergers" presentation with IQs in the 99.8th percentile and hyperlexia. Yet he wasn't potty trained until 4 and i couldn't ride a bike without training wheels until 11. I think more education about the spiky cognitive profile with intense strengths and weaknesses could help.

SM child age 0-9 yrs..play,OT, play therapist…Ffwrd to 17 and finally have a “interview” next week but virtual…then testing will happen if she seems it’s needed, third would be results. We switched from public with an IEP that wasn’t followed, to Christian school where child was bullied by the teacher to homeschool where we see child thrive but all of us agree “something isn’t just right”… no eye contact, no real empathy when someone gets hurt, likes to holds parents hands and give BIG hugs, hyper focused on certain subjects, only eats certain foods, no real friends, and all the etc.
