Paul your tenacity is what makes your videos so appealing to me. I'm on a quest to watch all your utube videos. Soon, the premier channel follows for me. WHY? Because in the work-a-day world of changing tires and doing brake jobs and oil changes and all those other tasks we do as techs, many of us hunger to be really good at diagnostics, but don't get enough opportunities. I have learned so much from all your videos. I look forward to the new ones coming out and re-watch older ones often. You drill the principles you teach into peoples minds and that is a good thing.....The test light, the 5 volt ref, tach movement, cranking sound, prove your ground, idle fuel trims/possible vacuum leaks and on and on. A wealth of knowledge and skill, derived from a whole lot of hard work, over many years, coupled with a great desire to teach and share it all, must Always be celebrated. Oh, wait, it is. 323k subscribers hit that button for a reason. Paul, thank you for doing what you do. It has helped me achieve a better understanding about a subject I find fascinating.

Small shop owner checking in here. You bring up that the parts store should pay for lost time. I agree, and I have 3 different scenarios to share. 1. My personal 2002 Ford Mustang GT. PCM went. No problem, got a Cardone reman, car starts up, we figured it was fine. 30 days later, the car intermittently would crank no start, setting U codes and flashing the Theft light. After checking CCRM, powers, grounds, doing a pinpoint test on the SCP network, everything passed. So, we called a PCM. Warrantied it out. 30 days later, the replacement does the same thing. Same symptoms, same 2 hours of diag and pinpoint tests, same results. Warranty a PCM. Third PCM - runs 30 days. SAME symptoms. This time, I tried something off the wall. Bought a used OEM PCM from Ebay, flashed it, programmed keys, and the car has run fine for 3 months now and never missed a beat. 2. 2013 Chevrolet Cruze 1.8L. Came in, had a ripped PCV diaphragm, needed a valve cover. Installed a parts store valve cover, the car didn't make it home to my customer's house! The PCV in that one let go so violently that the intake filled with engine oil. I had to pull the intake, completely clean it out, and then replace the valve cover again. This time, a GM part went on. No more trouble since! 3. 2010 GMC Yukon Denali. Reduced Engine power concern. Diagnosed a bad TPS. Put a TPS on it, it lived 24 hours. Got it back, tested, sure enough, bad part. Got a warranty replacement, installed it, and it was worse than the bad one! Went to a different vendor, and that one has been working well. Between the Mustang, the Cruze, and the Denali, that was probably 20 hours combined of diagnostic and repair time. Who didn't get paid for that? This guy.

Coming from someone who has been playing with Foxbody Mustangs since the late 90s I can tell you I realized early on that any parts store module was junk. We even had trouble with the MSD, Accel & other aftermarket ignition companies modules. The only module that I can say always worked everytime was the Motorcraft module. Although now we are using aftermarket EFI with crank triggers, cam sync's & MSD dual sync distributors, every so often we have an original or modified Fox still using the factory EECIV, I'm lucky enough to have Down's Ford close by & they still have stock of the Motorcrafts modules. This was an excellent series, thank you for still doing the older stuff including the Foxbody & other EEC-IV stuff because I still work on that stuff in 2022!

@@scientist100 that and the parts issue he’s facing here. I’ve never seen as many defective parts out of the box that I have the last few years. PCM’s, alternators, power steering pumps, glow plug modules, etc. Doesn’t matter how complex or simple the part is the quality has went to 💩. It’s about to the point where if you want to get a part that’s likely to work you have to go OEM. Just the ones off of the top of my head I put SIX power steering pumps on an accord before we got one that worked and was quiet. Four glow plug modules on an F-350 before we got a good one. Three rack and pinions on a 2012 Camaro. It will just about drive you mad. Thankfully that accord power steering pump is easy to change or I may have ended up lighting a match if you know what I mean. They also need to test these electronic parts especially the remans better. I’ve been running into multiple bad Reman ECMs on fords and Chryslers. They usually get rid of the initial problem but have something like a bad purge solenoid driver or something causing you to have to do it all again. Kind of like Dorman and how they want to make a million junk parts instead of fewer quality parts.

I finally ordered a kit to relocate the TFI module off of the distributor. It came with wires and a heat sink. I relocated the TFI module to the driver side strut post and it solved the problem. The distributor gets hot and heat sinking an electronic circuit to an already hot surface was a bad design. Thank you for all the videos and the wealth of knowledge you have shared over the years. I also wanna second the fact of new parts being bad, I can’t lie; it’s relieving to know that I’m not only one who bought multiple modules and had the same issue. These ford ignition systems make you feel insane, because you do the same thing more than 3 times and end up with the same result; only to change it one more time for it to work properly. I’m not joking when I say I purchased 4 of these modules, an absolute joke of an ignition system; they all did the same thing. To this day i have not found one that works properly, and I’ve tried from 4 separate dealers. It’s only this video that guarantees what my problem is I have checked the connector as well. Seriously thank you so much for making me feel like I’m not insane. Even finding the black module was a pain all on its own, I called Ford, MSD, Holley, autozone,Napa, oreilly’s, Rocksuto, and nobody could give me any information as to what the difference was between the two. I believe they touched on it in the previous video, but there is a MASSIVE difference in the two modules; if you have the incorrect one the vehicle WILL NOT START. It will not send spark to the Dizzy, for anyone who needs the ICCD Black module, the only ones I’ve seen that actually send a black one is TRANSPO by WAI GLOBAL and they go under the model name of FM515. Most of these dealers just think there’s no difference and act like your dumb for asking specifically for the black one, there is a difference and your motor will not start without the correct one. Sorry for the long winded comment, but I just wanted to spare anyone else the absolute journey and pain it was to find solid info. Thank you again for your persistent effort to teach us this stuff, I have a feeling we’re gunna need to know these details for the future ahead of Im honest. In closing, no it’s probably not your fuel system, it’s probably not your intake or any sensors , it’s not even your spark delivery; it’s just that dumb asinine piece of Ford history called the TFI MODULE😂(ignition module)
@richardostrowski6420
@richardostrowski6420 3 жыл бұрын
Back in the day, we came upon this exact problem on Ford motors. First, they make a TFI test kit that checks the module, pickup and coil and takes all of 15 minutes to check. That being said, we dealt with stuck distributors on these motors also. What we found was that the oil pump shaft drive that is driven by the distributor would seize to the distributor shaft itself. We would have to remove the oil pan and pull out the oil pump assembly to get the shaft out. With the pump/shaft out, the distributor came right out. There is also a clip on the shaft that keeps the shaft from pulling out of the oil pump when removing the distributor.

I greatly appreciate the guts of the module being shown! That’s the first thing I would have done after discovering they are junk. Unfortunately from that angle on my TV, I couldn’t see much. I would suspect that the terminals have some super thin wires going down to the board and one has broken loose. It would be interesting to see if soldering on new wires from the terminals to the board would fix it.
@ScannerDanner

It would have been, but I wasn't interested enough at this point in this case study. I felt defeated at so many points in this one. Once it was fixed, I didn't care why or what part of the p.o.s. ICM was bad, or made incorrectly. I only cared about knowing that it was bad. In hindsight, now that its been a month or so, that would have been cool to experiment a bit 😉

We only got to see two hours of your frustration. I’ve been there so many times. Last few years defective new parts became normal for all brands. Before TFI we diagnosed the modules in late 70’s cars by pouring a gallon of water on it to cool them. If it started then it was replaced. I really enjoy videos since retirement. Wished you were around decades ago. Aggravation was just as bad. 👍 for granddaughter to fully recover.

It is a circuit layout design issue, the high current lines that run the ignition coil trace is ran under neath all of the sensitive digital data lines impedance matching resistors, because the supplier did not pay for a multilayer board to isolate conducted emissions. This would cause loop back with the output causing random signals depending on frequency of pulses. In electronics we call these oscillations. Inductive load like ignition coils need damped with a voltage limiting diode. Also, I hope your granddaughter is doing well. Prayers for her recovery.

Hi Paul, Nice outcome. I wouldn't have suspected a fourth module to be bad but... reality is what it is. I noticed something in your behavior and I should let you know cause it's counterproductive: when you are about to catch the culprit you get overexcited and begin to omit details and make mistakes. And, of course, you get frustrated realizing the mistakes that you did and lose control over the repairing and also lose focus. You should go till the end with a supposition and get excited at the end only. Cheers!

Bad new parts definitely make one second guess things, even to the point of making mistakes in one's thought processes. I too, when I watched this said to myself a few times, that what I was chasing was not a possible issue. Like the pip wire dropping out, I proved so many times that, that was not the case, yet still felt the need to check it directly. It wasn't that I didn't finish a thought, it was me searching for the answer when I believed the module to be good. No way 3 modules are doing the exact same thing! But it was.

@@ScannerDanner A module sitting on an engine part that gets very hot and very cold should exceed some standards. Looking at the image at the end of the video I see a crappy solder joint in the upper left corner of the module. A connection that seems to go from the switch side of the power transistor to the outside of the module. That kind of thing is certainly a culprit. At least the connections from the board to the outside world should be welded for this kind of module. These modules should be mounted away from the engine in order to work for some time. Maybe that's why they seemed to work in the beginning but failed afterwards. If you still have access to the car it would be interesting to re-solder that joint and check the functionality of the module. All in all this is not a AEQ-100 or 200 module. It is just chinese junk...

As an old school tech still in the field and working on today's modern vehicles I admire your dedication to find the issue instead of swapping parts! I remember the EEC-IV and CCC systems in my early days and the hair I have lost over those terrible designs. Made me feel good seeing someone else going through the same. I will say that I have learned so much by being in the field from the beginning and sticking to the basic fundamentals with a lot of my work. today's vehicles may provide us alot of data to look at to help pinpoint an issue, but it always seems to go back to the basics when finding a problem. Great work you do and have been following you for a long time. I may have to swing by sometime when you are at Danners I have a shop on the other side of South Park.

First thing I do is install an older analog MSD 6AL (newer digital boxes are junk like the modules) then remove the “salt and pepper shakers” and solder the harness directly. I'm just an intense DIY'er. Last Summer, my 1993 C1500 was running rough with an ignition control module error stored in the ECM. I did call the local parts store to make sure they had an ignition control module tester rig. They did. The module tested bad. I had them test the one I was buying to make sure it was good out of the box. A long while back, my lawn mower (Deere with a Kawasaki engine) had a seriously bizarre surging issue. I cleaned the carb a dozen times. Spark looked okay. Finally, I sweet talked a neighbor down the street to loan me his Deere for parts substitution. When his coil assembly was fitted to my mower, it ran perfectly. Well, there we have it! A new coil and I was back in business. Sometimes, that rabbit hole is long and deep.

That was epic Paul and just shows how complicated these older systems truly were back in the day. These systems still come back to haunt techs now and I was engrossed by you and your brother trying to figure out how these modules truly operate. It does not make sense to me that disconnecting the spout wire proves a pick-up coil can be faulty when the pick-up coil is used as a signal for the module anyway in module mode. If the pick-up coil is faulty then surely the car will miss / not run correctly always, with or without spout. There has to be someone out there who understands these systems like the back of their hand, like a Ford tech who actually did factory approved dealership training on these systems and who can reveal more info. The GM systems were similar but did not seem to cause as many headaches as the Ford systems from what I have been told.

He is a lot like you but he uses all Factory Equipment. He gets the Bingo answer 98% of the time. He is also a Teacher of Carquest for the Local Shops around my area. One thing he has always stated: "DO NOT USE CARQUEST REMAN DISTRIBUTOR UNITS!!!" "Most of their Ignition parts are junk." I feel for you. You seemed to have hit a wall and went too far trying to figure it out. Just like you said, it was a good runner until the no start, Distributor was the only change for the current issue. That could have eliminated the Plug. I appreciate the extra effort you put into it. Now one has to wonder why the Distributor will not pull out... Did the other shop install it without any Lubrication on the Gear? The Rotor turns as it lifts a little, the Gear seems to have some slop, maybe Mushrooming?? Oil Pump Drive hammered in???? Does not really matter at this point..
