The words น้อยNoí and หน่อย Noì are some of the first words anyone learns when studying Thai or just visiting Thailand, but it's surprising how many people actually still don't fully grasp the difference between these two words even after becoming quite proficient in Thai.
In this clip we look at the difference between น้อยNoí and หน่อย Noì and by the end of it, you'll finally be able to order Thai food with the correct level of spiciness to suit your taste!
This clip is the result of requests that have been sent in since uploading my latest set of language clips.

I've just recorded the video clip for you - there's a lot in it, so I think it will take quite a bit of editing today. This is one of the main requests I receive, so hopefully it will help many people.

Great idea for a clip! I actually have stuff I use in my Cracking Thai Fundamentals course that I use to explain these. I'll try and get the clip out in the next couple of days.

Now I know why my food is never just a little bit spicy. Thanks

Precisely - this is why in my Cracking Thai Fundamentals class, I spend 2 days getting people up to speed from the word go in the writing system and how it hooks in with tones, throat positions etc. It mitigates a lot of grief and unlearning in the future.

I guess depending on the context, it could have that meaning too!

I completely missed it. I don't understand the difference. For me the explanation is very confusing.

ไม่เคยคิดมาก่อน ว่าภาษาไทยจะมีศัพท์ที่ยุ่งยากขนาดนี้ "นิดหน่อย" "นิดเดียว" "เล็กน้อย" "น้อยหน่อย" ให้คนไทยอธิบายก็คงงงเหมือนกัน

My goodness, I have going around for a long time asking for my food to be pet nit noi expecting but not getting just slightly spicy food. I thought they thought it would be funny to make it pet for me anyway. LOL. Thank you for clearing that up! I can not understand why my Thai friends NEVER ever explained this to me! AARGH. Pet noi for me for now on. Question. Do the 2 noi come from the same cognate or root? If so I guess I don't understand why the spelling difference is so.

If hard pressed to translate อยากกินเผ็ดนิดหน่อย into English, I'd probably say something like "I/(whoever the subject is) *kind of* want to eat [something] spicy." The phrase "kind of" just conveys the feeling นิดหน่อย has in that sentence to me, if indeed an English translation is needed. Maybe that might be a good way to explain it to people just starting out in Thai? Or maybe I'm just strange, haha. I agree with another commenter though, this is definitely a good example of why learning the Thai script is helpful (or the script of any language one is learning, especially tonal languages for native speakers of non-tonal languages).

Please show us how to learn the writing systems based on the Indic sound system using the Indic consonant compass that you devised. It is something that I really want to give a shot at before school starts.

This would be a good example of why a learner of Thai should make an effort to learn the Thai script pretty early on in their study of the language.

Yes, I know. I was a little hasty to ask this question not seeing that the difference was only the tone. Thanks. I have to learn the Thai script!
