Thank you for the support, Marcelo. I've enjoyed making the Language Notes over the summer and into the fall. It's a different kind of lesson. I plan to return to more traditional topics soon. I need to finish my other playlist on punctuation! Have a good weekend!

Hello Borka. I think the more common question (at least in the U.S.) is "What do you do?" The expression "earn a living" doesn't necessarily mean that the person likes what s/he does. There might be too much of a focus on making money to pay all one's expenses. In the professional world, people like to focus on building a career (with the unspoken hope that it will lead to good money). I'd suggest using the more neutral and general question, "What do you do?"

Hello Céline. Yes, I suppose we sense the different positions people occupy in life, and money is one contributing factor, so we feel questions about earnings are taboo.

Hello Bimal. Yes, I only talked about direct deposit to explain one of the payment options. Employees can have their pay deposited to their savings or checking account. Some professionals may also be given the option to have stock in the company. Kind wishes to you!

Ha ha. Yes, it's strange, but several people over the years have told me I look like Winona Ryder or Uma Thurman. I'll take either comparison as a compliment since both actresses choose interesting roles and look good on camera! I'm glad my videos are a part of your studies. Thank you. I also have exercises for review on my website. I hope you'll continue to follow my lessons, and please tell others at your call center about my channel. :) Kind regards!

Hello! Yes, perhaps for another video the main title could be "Making Money" rather than "Getting Paid." I decided to put the secondary title there for now because "money" is more readily understood than "paid." I'm certainly not an expert on business investments or finance, but I could consider basic business concepts that the average person might speak about. Thank you. Regards!

Hello Krishna. If you are learning as you watch my videos, then I am happy. :) Please know you can also post questions on my website. I can answer at length there, but in this case, the answer is quick and easy: Use "since" + simple past to mark the past point in time. You can say, "It has been a long time since we talked." In your other sentence, you'll also need the simple past for that completed action. "I think the last time we talked was 1.5 years ago." Regards!

Hello Muhammad. That's interesting. I suppose every bride's family worries about the groom's potential. Traditionally, that's why a nice diamond ring must be given. It's proof that he can provide for her. Then again, in some cultures and some families there is more concern about whether the bride is a suitable choice!

Hi Luis. Are you asking if a fee gets paid only if the service results in a positive outcome? The answer in most cases is no. You must pay a professional for his or her time regardless. For example, a patient goes to a doctor for a consultation. The first meeting costs $150/hr. This fee must be paid before the doctor sits down with the patient. Perhaps the consultation will lead to a desired answer, perhaps not. However, as I understand, some lawyers get paid only if a case is won.

Hi Jennifer. We should call it these days "plastic income vs. plastic spending". Don't need to carry much money in the pocket. Bills are direct debit and what left on your account after tax is the saved money. A happy person who can save some!
@Englishwithjennifer6 жыл бұрын
I think it's all becoming digital. There's less and less plastic. We can pay with smartphones. Plastic spending is being replaced with digital payments. We don't need to carry much cash in our pocket either. Yes, if we can manage to save a little after taxes, we're happy! :)

It's also not good to ask people about their salary in Egypt. It's a private matter, unless you're proposing to a girl. Many families would want to know how much a groom make before they gave him their approval. I mean, it's sometimes an essential matter in marriage. Nowadays, many families wouldn't approve of their daughter's marriage to a less-paid person.

Hello Jennifer! Very interesting your video about the topic "getting paid". In general, if we talk about "making money", we could consider the activities concerning to those which allow us to receive money from investments or business. For example, an independent work done by an individual who receives money from small investments or small business. In this case, would the vocabulary related to these economic activities be pertinent for this study?. Many thanks, indeed. Good luck! Regards.

Hi, Jennifer. I love your beauty mark. And my question this time is how do you call it in American English: Is it a mole, a birthmark or a beauty spot? I want to know which one is used the most in spoken American English. Thank you very much. By the way loved this lessons. I a worker and here in Brazil I work more than 4O hours a week. And receive monthly. I have to work on Saturday from 9:20am to 6:00pm.
@Englishwithjennifer11 жыл бұрын
Hello. Well, if you want to be kind, you can call it a beauty mark. :) Doctors would call it a mole. It sounds like you have a demanding work schedule. Most work 40 hours a week, but a good number of people work more than that, and not everyone gets paid for overtime. If you're on salary, you often take work home and you don't get compensated for that. I suppose the nature of the job is a key factor.
