I am revisiting some final things in my extreme minimalist home that I may want to declutter. That I previously thought I would not be decluttering. However, recently I have had a shift in some of my values about practicality & aesthetic style with some areas of my home still giving me a feeling of overwhelm. Especially, in regards to cleaning & storage.
Whilst I still have a want to keep my home stylish with a minimalistic interior design and aestheticism. I have been reconsidering some choices that are hard to maintain, clean & tidy up.

Thank you for showing people what sustainable minimalism looks like. You share your thinking and process. You don't dictate what is more or less minimalist, you let the process of what works for you evolve and you share it with everyone. This is how my partner and I practice minimalism, and we've learned so much about ourselves and each other in the process. Too many people want a process that will magically solve all their problems so they dive into minimalism, make changes that don't work for them and then get frustrated and blame minimalism because an influencer sold them a snake oil cure all.

Our house is over 100 years old and I bought custom sized roller shades for the windows. Theyre double hung windows, so we roll up the shades when we open the windows. We installed thin curtain rods and i made voile semi sheer curtains for the windows. The shades and curtains are white, as are the walls and sofa. The sheers bring in some light during the day and the shades are great at night to block light. You can get blackout vinyl that adheres to the windows if what you mostly want is privacy. You can see out but people cant see in. Its a plastic disposable product so not eco friendly but its a less expensive alternative if you are looking for privacy and not necessarily light blocking. We have this on our guest bathroom window downstairs because it faces the neighbor's house and I dont want curtains in a bathroom or a heavy roller shade on a small window. You just cut it to fit and i used 2 sided tape to adhere it to the window. You can still open the window.

I don’t know whether or not you own or rent your apartment, so this may not even be doable, but what about taking the carpet up? Is there hardwood floors underneath? BTW… I really appreciate you sharing your process. I would love to be able to declutter my stuff. I’m finding it so difficult to let go. I can only attribute this to having had so much loss in my life that wasn’t under my control. My mom died in 2008, my sister in 2013, my older brother in 2019, lost my job in 2019 do to a disability and my younger brother in 2022! I absolutely KNOW THAT GETTING RID OF THE JUNK would be so beneficial. Just really having a super hard time doing it. I even have a very good friend that puts up with me in the process and she still tries to help.
@SagelifeMinimalism
@SagelifeMinimalism 9 күн бұрын
Thank You ☺️ it’s rented otherwise we wood absolutely take the carpets up 😊… That’s very sad for you and I suppose we all deal with grief very differently. You could say that grief for me had the opposite effect. I lost my stepdad in some very horrible circumstances. Then a very close friend. Then our family dog. Then another friend. All in the space of two years. I don’t say this to compare I say this to empathise. The irony is that all 4 lived life in the moment. Made the most of everyday and lived life to the full. A minimalist way of life became easier to me because I realised how truly fleeting life can be. Its paradoxical. Because although ‘stuff’ doesn’t matter & Our lives & experiences do, when someone we love has gone from this earthly plane the tangible seems somehow more important. However, I tried to not let the loss overcrowd my life. I know the loved ones who had gone wouldn’t want that for me & they were not gone from my heart. I picked the smallest sentimental item to have a tangible token of their memory. But it is a memento that reminds me to live my life in a way that would honour them. Like a talisman of their mortal energy. That reminds me to not waste time. Just as they never wasted time. (Even a day sitting in the park is not wasting time if it’s what you want to do.)I felt having too much stuff or too many mementos was taking my time. Time is taken from too many people, sooner than it should be… Life may never be the same, but maybe one day it will be at the very least, peaceful🕊️ 🙏

@@SagelifeMinimalism thank you for your kind words. I know they are true. The disability is the biggest thing. Losing the physical ability to go, see and experience. I’m divorced with no children so it’s easy to ignore what’s behind a closed door, all the while, knowing that it’s causing anxiety because it’s not easy to do on many levels. I didn’t take mementos and I really am not sentimental. It’s possibly a thing of attachment. I know it doesn’t make sense. Lol. I will say that I have made a little progress as a did take a load of donations off last month. Just need to keep doing maybe little more each month.

I love your channel, I only discovered you recently and have gone back and watched many of your older videos too. I just wanted to say that I think you should keep your thick block out curtains. I think it is the wrong time of year for you to do the RIP method for the curtains, you really should do it during the coldest part of winter when the curtains are most needed, and THEN determine if you can live in peace (and don't freeze) without them. I am saying this as someone who lives in a similar climate to you, but I am in the southern hemisphere, so it is actually currently winter here for me. I just moved into an older rental that doesn't have double glazed windows, and has very poor insulation... and just like your climate it also gets down to about -5 degrees celcius here. It has been so incredibly cold in this rental that I had to go out and buy thick curtains so that I could insulate the windows and keep some of the heat inside. I was also thinking about how you want to sublet while you travel. If you remove the curtains, then the person you sublet to is going to need to go buy some new curtains to replace the ones you decluttered, especially if they sublet during the winter when its cold. It would just be better and easier for both you and the next tenant if you leave the old curtains (and better for the environment, because your old curtains won't go to landfill, and you won't be fuelling consumerism by forcing the next tenant to buy new curtains).
@SagelifeMinimalism
@SagelifeMinimalism 8 күн бұрын
Thank you…I don’t have the previous black out curtains anymore. I got rid of them as they were green and didn’t fit the room anymore. I was trying to brighten the room up as much as possible. Because ironically in the winter it’s really dark. The ones I took down in this video are sheer.That is why I’ve had to take them down. I thought two layers of sheer curtains were going to be enough when I originally took the green black out curtains down. I won’t be buying anything new so in that way I’m not being additive to a consumerist or wasteful cycle. Anything I get will be secondhand. Also the sheer curtains were originally my mums so I will just be returning them to her 😊
@LauraBronson
@LauraBronson 8 күн бұрын
@@SagelifeMinimalism oh, sorry you don't have the thick black out curtains anymore, I must have confused this video with a previous video. Great to hear that you're not contributing to the consumer cycle and that you were able to get your sheer curtains second hand from family. Perhaps the best option would be to get some nice thick black out curtains in a lighter colour (like white or cream), so that they still perform the functional task of blocking out the light while using your projector and keeping the warmth inside during winter, but the lighter colour will also help to make your room look brighter too. Good luck! I hope you find a lovely option to use in your windows that is both functional and aesthetic. ❤️

You can get stick on sheets for windows to make them opaque but still let light in. Depends if you like being able to look out.
@SagelifeMinimalism
@SagelifeMinimalism 9 күн бұрын
I know, I got the opaque blinds that stick on just at the top then you let down. But they were too sheer and not opaque enough. I need a lot of light in the day for filming, the odd plant 🪴 I still have, to not feel trapped inside 😂 but also because I like my sea view and wood 🌳 view. Which I can see when I look sideways in the bay window 🪟 I just need to be able to close them on an evening. For privacy and for the projector on the summer evenings when it doesn’t get dark til 10pm. I need both 😂 🤦‍♀️ I need absolute brightness in the day to film but then absolute black out later 😂 2 ends of the spectrum 😊 ☀️ 🔆 🌒

Hush the space! I've recently come across this concept of hushing the room or space. Fantastic concept. I hushed the top of my formally packed top of the wardrobe. Now, the only things up there are my work backpack and day backpack. 😊
@SagelifeMinimalism
@SagelifeMinimalism 8 күн бұрын
I think many minimalists do a similar thing. That perhaps sometimes they’ve thought of themselves but come up with different names for it ie: ‘hushing’. However, I think there is a fair bit of plagiarism going round on KZbin 🫣🤭🤥🫢 It’s annoying for small creators. Especially when larger creators don’t give credit. So I just have to let it go or put it down to coincidence. I know it’s hard to be original or creative 🙄 Right after I did my 40 days of decluttering. (Which was back in February for the original) I was putting stuff out of the way to leave the space to rest. (Which for me is in the other room) I noticed an influx of other minimalist channels all doing the same thing 🤷‍♀️ I suppose that’s the nature of being an influencer. But a little recognition from a fellow creator wouldn’t go amiss. I know I always deal with it by giving credit if I’ve liked an idea. Then if it’s one of these typical videos that’s been made by everyone so you can’t find the original. I’ll say I’m going to put my slant on this ‘trending’ video. To show I’m not trying to claim someone else’s idea 😊Live Long & Prosper 🖖

I Love it. You have a great room. Is there no opaque, window film that will stick to the window to make it not see through but still let the light in? I don't know if that type of thing is always patterned but it may be much lighter on your eye than bamboo blinds?
@SagelifeMinimalism
@SagelifeMinimalism 9 күн бұрын
Thank you… I know what you mean with the blinds but if I stick an opaque film up it would then be difficult to get light to film and be in the light through the day… not to mention I do enjoy my sideways view from the bay window which is of the sea 🌊 and the woods 🌳 when I look down the street. I’m currently thinking of just white black out curtains bought second hand. But made to measure the window exactly. So hopefully the white would just blend into the background 😂 🪟 😊

There was too much light coming in. They were so sheer that they barely filtered any light at all. Which in order for our projector to work better, (now it’s light til nearly 10pm), we need the curtains to block much more light.
