can I use nankin instead of sumi for same results?
@hellostudiom5 ай бұрын
I haven't personally used nankin ink before but if you have it, definitely give it a try. Try using it in a small bowl first to see if it will float on water. If it does, you should be good to go!

Hi thanks for your video! After printing my design, the ink tends to bleed a little bit when I lift the paper. Any tips to reduce this?
@hellostudiom2 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, thank you so much for watching. 😊Several factors contribute to ink bleeding (ink, paper, technique, etc). Before troubleshooting your materials, try holding your brush in the water for less time. This will prevent too much leftover ink on the water's surface when you make a print. As you place the paper in the water, gently submerge the entire sheet of paper so you can get rid of additional ink on the surface. It took me quite a while to get my technique right to prevent so much ink from bleeding, and it still happens from time to time. 😅 I have to remember to be patient and use less ink than I think I need. I hope that helps! Feel free to reach out to me on Instagram if you have more questions or want some feedback: instagram.com/mekeyahm/

Hi, thanks for sharing your process, material and technique! Really beautiful suminagashi artworks. May I ask you if you have tried on watercolor paper? I bought a black sumi-e ink and tried in Canson Watercolor 300g paper, which I really like in texture and thickness (I saw that a danish artist uses a similar watercolor paper and it works for him (not sure what type of ink he uses, he says that an indian ink)), but I am not able to get the black tone that I expected, it seems that the paper doesn't absorb the ink properly and I am just able to get a greyish tone. Any thoughts?

Thank you so much for the kind words! 😊 I haven't tried watercolor paper but when I first started I used cheap printer paper. 😅 Try using a bit more ink on your brush and hold it on the surface of the water for just a little bit longer to see if that helps. It's really just trial and error. If you're still having issues try a different paper (search for "unsized" or something made for printmaking). I hope that helps!

Hi @@hellostudiom ! Thanks for the answer :-) I've tried it on rice paper and the difference is remarkable, I'm now able to get the black tones that I expected. For sure, there are many variables at play, so trial and error is required in the process... (I've tried also passing absorbent paper over the surface of the water, just in case this modifies the surface tension of water or whatever...). Maybe the danish artist that I mentioned treats the watercolor paper with alum mordant... Hope to see more of your works, love all the care in details 💙

I also have a problem with the ink staying on. I read the advice in the previous comment and unfortunately it didn't give much. The ink stays about 30 seconds on the surface and then falls off. In another video I saw that they use kodak-flo. What do you think about it?
@hellostudiom10 ай бұрын
I haven't tried kodak-flo because it was quite expensive and hard to get my hands on when I first started. But many people use it and have found it to be helpful. I use traditional yasutomo sumi ink and cool tap water or distilled water (when I have it). There are a few things you could try before spending your money: 1. use less ink 2. dip the brush very lightly on the surface of the water (don't go too deep) 3. use a piece of paper to skim the water before you start

Thank you for sharing ❤ i really wanna try this in fabric. Will the supplies be different? And what kind of fabric should i use?
@hellostudiom2 жыл бұрын
Hi Fiona, I am so glad you found it useful. I am also thinking about experimenting with fabric for the first time soon. The supplies will remain the same, but I have been reading that mordanting fabric is an important first step. Linh My Truong has some tips for this process on their site: linhcreates.art/resources/

My sumi ink keeps sinking what can I do
@hellostudiom Жыл бұрын
Hi Loretta! So annoying when that happens. It could be one of two things: 1) your water is too hard or maybe has some metal in it, so you could try distilled or bottled water, which should help. I have to do this where I live. 2) you may be using a little too much ink. A little goes a long way, so start with just a bit, and you can squeeze out any excess. I find it helps to test my water and ink in a small bowl or cup before adding it to a larger tray. I hope that helps!
