Well done. Inspirational…After the Log Cabin Academy I put off or remained on the fence about taking the stone course…and I love stone.

Hope to go forward soon. I always wonder how to gather and/or procure the kind of stone that is needed…

Glad to hear it Jon! Depending on where you live, you can find stone either on the stone yard or in the classifieds. It's amazing sometimes what's out there!

Here in Michigan we have an abundance of rocks, mostly glacier fallout with a wide variety of sizes to choose from. Mostly free on dirt roads and your own property. Do you have any reservations using field stone, or have a preference for a particular type of stone?

In general, my recommendation is to worked with stone that has been previously faced or to search for stone that has a straight face...that is, depending on what you want to create. I go over my recommendations in the Stone Mason Academy on sourcing and looking for the perfect stone.

I have the same question. I plan on just pulling stones from piles in farmers' fields. With their permission, of course.

Thank you for these great videos, I have a mix or older chinking, in good shape, and newer chink and I want to stain it to a similar color in your background. Can you recommend a product I can paint over it and help seal it as well? A more tradition color since it's mostly mortar type color now.

Basically, no. You can try to paint over it but your results will not likely be as pleasing as you would hope. But still, you can try... For the best results, I recommend, tearing out the existing chinking and do as I recommend in the chinking academy--a full wiring with metal lath with cement topcoat.
