The other reason this car only had automatic is that at the time Mazda didn’t have manual transmission that could withstand 20b’s torque.
@brokenbmw34412 жыл бұрын
Don’t people swap this with an FC3s 5 speed manual?
@INUMIMI282 жыл бұрын
@@brokenbmw3441 They do, but they usually swap 5 speeds from later FD3S, which can withstand 20b’s torque.
@omarfermin22832 жыл бұрын
thats BS...rotary engines don't produce too much toque
@INUMIMI282 жыл бұрын
@@omarfermin2283 It’s true, 20b produced 297lb/ft of torque, the most powerful production car engine Mazda had ever produced at the time. Rotary=weak torque doesn’t apply to 20b, it had significantly more torque than R32 GT-R Twin turbo Z32, or 1JZ Soarer, the main rival. There were only two JDM cars that had more torque than 20b Cosmo, which were 3000GT VR-4 and Supra. Like I said in the beginning, 20b was the most powerful engine Mazda produced at the time and it was powerful by miles. It had twice the amount of torque than FC3S did, they simply didn’t have transmission that could withstand 20b’s torque, because they never made an engine that powerful before.
@tsherwoodrzero2 жыл бұрын
@@INUMIMI28 That's not exactly true. Pretty much every transmission in Mazda's catalog is shared with Nissan or Toyota because of either JATCO or Aisin-Warner respectively. Non-turbo RX7s usually got a M-series manual (M5M-D I think), while their turbo siblings received the R-series boxes. FD RX-7 is R15M-D and is a little weaker than the FC version. Crunchy 5th gear synchros are a common issue with FD transmissions. The HB Cosmo and HB/HC Luce/929 got the same transmissions too. Some early Z31 Turbos got a Borg-Warner T-5 World Class transmission from the factory thanks to the Aisin Warner partnership. Z32s got the JATCO RE4R01 (non-turbo) and RE4R03 (Turbo), which Mazda used in the Cosmo, named R4A-EL and Q4A-EL respectively. And in an ironic plot twist, both were used in the R32-R34 Skyline too. If they had made a R32 GT-R with an automatic, it would undoubtedly be a RE4R03, the same one Nissan put behind their V8s. So all of the groundwork was in place for Mazda to call Toyota (Aisin Warner) and ask them nicely to send over a prototype Viper T-56 6-speed manual. Most of the patents were already on file in 1990 here in the US. Name would probably be something like Q36M-R or something.

No. an FD, FC or FB might be more like a "s13" (tbh the miata is the s13 of the mazda world) but the JCES Cosmo is more like a 90's mazda Infiniti. A luxury performance car, Not a simple "sports" style car. Think like a cadillac CTS-V vs say camaro or corvette. A Toyota supra vs the Toyota soraer. Maybe be pretty fast just like the main line sports cars of their counterpart, but is also about luxury AND performance, not just performance.

The Cosmo is such an interesting car and quite rare, depending on where you live. I would love to own one, but with the pricing around $10,000 - $15,000, for a car that's almost 30 years old, it's a bit out of my price range. lol. It's still an awesome car, though.

I want to buy one of these with the 20b and not molest it, but where can I find aftermarket body kits for it? Some of them came with very generic and bland bumpers and side skirts, I just want a sportier looking set of bumpers, small wing (like the one in video) and either air suspension or lower it an inch on coils on some high quality wheels
Corrections required....... Eunos lasted from 88 - 02 L10 Cosmo was "not" the 1st rotary powered car in 1967. The NSU Spider was in 1963 JC Cosmo production ceased JUN-1995, not in 1996 Your "feature car" is a 90-91 Type-S version, as shown by the trim Production was 1990-95 The most valued versions today are the series-2 (94-95) Type-SX Mazda USA almost imported LHD versions under the defunct Amati sales channel scheduled for 1992 & there was debate whether to go with the 20B-REW or develop a new V12 engine due to emission's difficulties from 3-rotors & CAL regulations

The luxury coupe bodystyle was very popular in Japan at the time. All the different brands had some version of this style. They also did sports coupes like the 300zx, supra, 3000gt, rx7, etc. These days of the late '80's and early' 90's were the genesis of the JDM legend.

nah. rotaries can be made very quiet like the rx8 was stock... the 3 rotor even more so because it's so smooth and well balanced

Rotarty engines are way more smoother than inline 6s and v12s and they can be quieter by adding more mufflers. This guy seems to have removed some.

Enjoyable video, lovely clean looking car. However... I have to correct you. The first gen Cosmo was not the first car ever to feature a rotary engine. It might be the first Mazda ever, but not the first car. That would be the German NSU Spider. Many NSU's had rotary engines before Mazda started it. Another word for the rotary engine is a Wankel engine. Mr.Wankel was the German fella who actually invented the rotary engine. So I gather you are a Mazda enthousiast, but some credits are not theirs.
