Each year I take groups of students doing a Coast to Coast Route. This will be our 5th . We have done the Way of the Roses Route a few times the route that goes through the Lakes and also finishes at Tynemouth.
The students carry their own gear, put up and take down their own tents and plan and cook their own meals. In the past the students were aged between 13 and 16 and we took group sizes of forty eight! yep 48!. It was an amazing right on the trip. This year we are taking students as young as 11 years old so the group size is twenty.
I am doing the route again to get it fresh in my mind for the students and also to see the campsites the students will be using.
First I had to get there. I got the train to Kirkby Stephen and then rode to Allonby. The route was exactly 100km and I stopped at the Spring Lea campsite where the students will be starting their tour.
The route that I took to the start is below. It was a lovely ride. No traffic.

I also include a review of the brilliant 12 speed Microshift Shifters and Paul Components Thumbies. Please Paul keep making the Thumbies. They are ace! or Microshift do some top of the bar 12 speed levers with a 31.8 clamp as well as your straight bar ones cause I love changing gear at the top as with flared bars the bar ends can be vulnerable to knocks and this method solves that problem.

Those look like lovely lanes to ride. How many students do you take? What subject(s) do you teach? When I was at school I wish I had had a teacher prepared to do this for his students. Sill didn't stop me making trips on my own though. Lots of jam and marmalade sandwiches for the journey and a big heavy cotton canvas 2 man ridge tent. Those were the days.

Hi, this will be our 5th C2C with students. We have done the way of the roses three time and the Lake District route once before. I have now done the Hadrians Wall route twice but this will be the first time with students. In the past the students were 13 year old to 15 year old and the group size was 48…… yep 48 teens on the road was the craziest sight to see. This year we have a lot of 11 year olds doing it so we have decided to take a smaller group of 20 with 4 teachers. I teach computer science……..jam sarnies are so nice, with some creamy butter. Might have to have one for breakfast now you mentioned them.

@@RidingBicycles Sounds brilliant. Wish I was 11-12 years old again! Must be a logistical nightmare but so rewarding when you get them all to the destination safe and sound. Getting more youngsters cycling is so good. Good luck with it all. To warm dry happy endless days of summer.
