Cartier is no less a watchmaking company than a jewelry company. At least Cartier made the first successful man’s wristwatch and several iconic watch collections.
@MrGrentch
@MrGrentch 3 жыл бұрын
They didn't. Men's wristwatches had been around for at least a decade before the Santos, and the same Santos, or at least the original first one is remarkably missing today., as are the actual details beyond the marketing bumpf The production run of the Santos came along in 1912, by which time the man's wirstwatch was well in production, but really kicked off in the Great War.
@MrGrentch
@MrGrentch 3 жыл бұрын
Seems to have been a glitch on the Tube at my end as your reply vanished. :s Anyway... _MrGrentch That’s why I added the word “successful”. There are many sources that claim that Santos and Cartier popularized the idea of men wearing watches on their wrists. Before they did it wrist watches were regarded as female prerogative. Yes, the WWI forced mass production of wrist watches for very obvious practical reason. This, however, cannot take away from Cartier the glory of the creator of the very first famous wrist watch_ The Santos wasn't even close to "successful". If it had been there would be far more survivors from the time than there are. And there aren't. Even Cartiers example in their marketing is the later production run and with a redial. Like I pointed out men's watches in the military were well established for at least a decade by the time the Santos came out and nearly two by the time it was inactual production. Your average man who knew about such things would have been far more familiar with Omega and Longines and Zenith than Cartier, even at that early stage. Indeed most watches carried the retailer's name on the dail rather than the Swiss brand's. Oh and BTW "many sources" also claim Girard Perregaux supplied wirstwatches to the German navy in the 1880's, which is a nonsense and GP's example has a radium dial which couldn't have existed before 1912 at the earliest. The same "many sources" reckon Rolex invented the waterproof/diver/screwdown crown/automatic/GMT/Date window/insert other innovations here watch and yet nope, not a one was their innovation. In fact it's difficult to name a major Swiss watch brand who innovated _less_ than Rolex, except in marketing. A dead brand like Helvetia had more aviation history than either IWC or Breitling could dream of and longines would blow both out of the water. Zenith's Bleriot watch in their marketing is about twenty years too late for his channel flight. Many sources Versus actual Horology; the latter wins, but doesn't make good copy these days.
@ikirikchi
@ikirikchi 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrGrentch Sorry, but I do not believe that so many different sources were wrong in this particular case (not talking about GP fake legends). Here is just one of many very consistently claiming the same facts. A Brief History Of The Cartier Santos. The story of the origins of the Cartier Santos has become the stuff of legend. In the early 20th century, a Brazilian aviation pioneer named Alberto Santos-Dumont was living in Paris. He was the heir of a wealthy family of coffee producers. This allowed him to dedicate his life to aeronautical study and experimentation. In fact, many claim he was the first to achieve powered flight in 1906. As opposed to the Wright brothers who did achieve lift-off, but not unaided, at Kitty Hawk 1903. But that’s a story for another time. Santos-Dumont had a problem though. Using a pocket watch during his field tests was proving impractical. Downright dangerous even. So, he turned to his friend for help. That friend happened to be Louis Cartier. The grandson of Cartier founder Louis-François Cartier. He ran the Paris branch of Cartier and is responsible for some of the company’s most celebrated designs. After listening to his friend’s complaints, he created a flat watch with a distinctive square bezel. Critically, he attached a leather strap to the case so it could be worn on the wrist. And just like that, in 1904, the first Pilot’s watch was born. Santos-Dumont loved his new watch. He wore it every time he flew. A celebrity of the era, it wasn’t long before people noticed something unusual on his wrist. At the time, men did not wear wristwatches. Instead they carried pocket watches. Santos-Dumont, being one of the original influencers, helped change all that. Queries started to flow in from curious customers. Louis Cartier recognised the opportunity immediately. So, he commissioned movement maker Edmond Jaeger to mass produce the watch. In 1911, the Cartier Santos became what is considered to be the first wristwatch for men. Launched during an era defined by an obsession with progress it was an overnight hit. It’s no exaggeration to say the Cartier Santos played a key role in the move away from pocket watches.
@MrGrentch
@MrGrentch 3 жыл бұрын
@@ikirikchi I'm sorry Igor and with the greatest respect that reads like advertising copy and not fact. Just because the same thing is repeated doesn't make it true. Though this is very common on the interwebs and not just with watches and their history. 1) straps had been attached to watches, pocket and wrist for decades before the Santos. 2) Men did wear wristwatches before the Santos, military men in particular. There are many references and photos of same from the Boer war in the late 1880's 3) If Cartier "recognised the opportunity immediately", why did it take them six years to mass produce it? 4) If this watch was so important and such an influence where is the original? Where are the photos of Santos wearing it, or contemporary references to it? If it was an "overnight hit" in 1911 why are so few, pretty much none, of that original run around? Why didn't such an apparently popular design catch on more widely? The "Trench watch" manufactured by a host of companies was _the_ design that did. 5) In 1903 the Swiss company Dimier regsitered a design for men's wristwatch with wire lugs and a strap. They weren't the only ones. I have a lot of respect for Cartier's place in watchmaking, especially their designs, but the "first wristwatch" for men thing is far more legend and current marketing than fact. The first men's wristwatch had many many mothers.
@ikirikchi
@ikirikchi 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrGrentch 1. Fine. I willingly believe. But few people know about this, most likely because it was an exception rather than common practice. 2. See previous reply. Plus if wristwatches for men were such a common thing by 1904 why the hell Alberto strained Louis and asked his friend to make him a wristwatch. Wasn’t it easier to buy one in the nearest military shop? 3. I would put it this way. If it was just a marketing stunt in 1904, why Louis waited for more than six years before starting benefiting from it? May be it just took some time before he realized that the watch he made for his friend changed the paradigm and decided to follow the trend that he created before others took away his laurels? 4. How can you expect the original to be available if even twice younger Buzz Aldrin’s Speedmaster has been lost when sent to the Smithsonian Museum? (Couple of sources reported that it has been found recently in one of the NASA scrap boxes. But this news looks rather fake as it has not been supported by reputable news issues). 5. I agree that there were many mothers. But mother Louis was the most famous and in that sense the most successful of all. Non surprisingly Louis Cartier is called by many a watchmaker and a jeweler, not just a jeweler.

Wow, lots of different points in this video. First, very surprised that Omega didn’t make your podium. I get Rolex being favored for style, marketing, and popularity. But I think Omega makes an objectively better watch. So, very surprised that you passed them over completely. Let me see, ah yes, about bracelets without micro adjust or half links. Hate them. Especially when integrated and impossible to swap for something else. Everyone should always be aware of their surroundings. And don’t assume that bad people aren’t going to show up at your door. Hopefully never happens, and probably unlikely. But use common sense when wearing valuables in public. Chickens! That’s kinda funny. We live on some acreage in Kansas (near Kansas City MO) and my wife keeps chickens and bees. 😊 🐝 🐓

You are spot on about watch winders. They are a fine convenience for high complication automatics that are in a rotation and in earlier days the lubricants benefited from being in motion. Old style lubricants slowly evaporate into a shellac. Modern lubricant volatility more fully goes into gas than before. So unserviced vintage watches develop gunk in the gears and modern unserviced watches slowly become unlubricated.

Hi Jenni, Jewellers watches could be as good as watchmakers watches! Cartier has an history of watchmaking. It’s not Michel Kors! And I would like to see a feature about L.U.C. A brand with an over 160 years history of watchmaking. And for the last nearly 60 years it’s practically a German company. Kind regards, Claus

Hi Jenni, I hope I'm not asking a question that was answered at some point earlier, but what are your thoughts on Baume & Mercier watches? Their Clifton range seems to have decent accuracy, huge power reserve, not too big of a case size and the price seems reasonable too. If you were looking for an understated/sleek smart-casual watch (no bulky cases, no large digits or thick hour/minute hands) with a case diameter of no more than 40mm within a similar price bracket, would you consider their watches or would you rather go for something else? Thank you!

Quite amazed about your subjective palmares. When speaking as watch enthusiast, there is no doubt that at least Patek Philippe, A. Lange & Söhne or Vacheron Constantin should figure amongst the winners. Indeed, it is a question of taste, but still. Just in case, I've got a Sub' 126610 LN. I think I would have cited Rolex in third position, JLC in second and Vacheron in first.

I think a video of you building your own watch would be very interesting. You seem to be a very competent and detail oriented person, so I think it would be very informative. I have raised chickens as pets and they are great fun. If you limit the number to no more than 5 and spent a lot of quality time with them, they can be quite intelligent. The down side is that they often don't live more than five years. It is still worth the experience.

Jeweler watches thoughts: The Cartier Santos has a long, long history. So this market segment has been part of wristwatches since virtually the beginning. "Fashion watch" genre has a checkered reputation with social media marketing brands and brand licensing deals for prêt-à-porter labels that push low end, inexpensive drop shipped product at huge markups. A haute couture product carries the expectation to be apiece with other luxury goods in terms of craftsmanship though. Is the distance between a Rolex Day-Date with diamond indices and a Piaget so great? A continuously growing product style since the 70s is "luxury steel sports watch", especially if a Gerald Genta design. That umbrella includes Bulgari.
