Glad to see more unknown French submachineguns. I hope one day we can have an episode about the French SMG developpements of the 20's, especially the STA 24. A good 9mm Parabellum gun that would have been the standard issued SMG of the French army at the end of the 20's. But then someone decided that all small guns had to be in 7.5mm....

What a coincidence - I was very recently watching a repeat of the 1978 series "Return of the Saint" (S1 E8 The Poppy Chain) and the shoot out with the Camargue based drug runners saw them armed with a MAT-49 and an unknown (to me) other SMG, then lo & behold this video drops and it is the same gun, the Gevarm SMG (can't recall if a D3 or D4). The series was known for lots of location shooting around Europe rather than bringing the world to Elstree Studios hence the readier access to French weapons.

I have a Gevarm E-1 rifle. Straight blow-back, open-bolt, .22 with a great huge ridge down the centre of the bolt that all but crushes the end of the cartridge when it slams home. It's a backpack gun with a big knurled takedown screw to remove the barrel and forestock. Fun little gun.

The supposition that those holes in the lower receiver are for the sliding wire stock is half right, according to photographs the rear one is for the wire stock but even the wire stock version shows the forward holes with nothing in them. There is a photo of the Gevarm in Maxim Popenker and Anthony Williams book “Sub-Machine Gun” but the book identifies the D4 as the collapsing stock version and the D3 as the wooden stocked one.

Believe it or not, a few of these SMG with the wire stock were used in Nicaragua during the 1979 Revolution. I would love to see a modern CAD version of this gun with modern upgrades, also I think the hole directly behind the trigger group was for a sling swivel for use without the buttstock ALA 80's hip-shooting ALA CQB, the rear hole would most likely be a spring detent for a over/under folding stock. either way this would be a great modern SUB-GUN to re build as modern "STEN" variant.

It reminds a bit of the Spanish Republic Labora Fontbernat M-1938 SMG: the radiator type barrel shroud, long magazine well, pistol grip, relatively large wooden buttstock... However the Spanish one was quite expensive to manufacture as It was mostly mechanized if I am not mistaken. Not too many were built, around 1500, maybe 2000. I hope Ian could get his hands on one some day and make the mandatory video.

Could we have an episode on the HK45 and modernized FALs? HK45 was developed to be used by Delta Force, being kinda a modernized 1911, but I think it was never adopted. It was supposed to be THE pistol, but it's now forgotten, what happened? Also, there's an episode on modernized G3s, we could also have one on fals. It's another forgotten weapon, and people only talk about rhodesia when they remember the fal, but there are a lot of countries who still uses it, I think it would be cool if modernized fals become a new trend like it was the alpha ak.
@JD-tn5lz
@JD-tn5lz Жыл бұрын
The HK45 is still produced (or was until very recently) and found major success on the civilian market. It is one of those firearms that HKnuts argue with other HKnuts about what is the best .45 that HK produced.
@genericpersonx333
@genericpersonx333 Жыл бұрын
When you say modernized, what do you mean? Modernization comes in two flavors: One can change an old gun design to have new capabilities, producing entirely new guns made specifically to have those new capabilities. One "modernizes the design," rather than modernizing the guns themselves. The other way is to take produced guns and replace old parts with new parts to change capability. One is modernizing the guns themselves. In general, most users of the FAL have not significantly modified produced FALs to have new capabilities. FN is noted for encouraging customers to buy new-production FALs that have new features built in, rather than offering major upgrade kits for existing FALs. Several major users of G3, conversely, have opted to actually take their old G3s and replace significant portions of the old guns with new parts intended to change capability. H&K is known for promoting modularity in their designs which facilitates post-production upgrade or modification.

@@JD-tn5lz I was curious to know specifically what happened with the hk45 in the army, the pistol met the delta requirements, why did they choose glock instead? I know that they didn't like the finger grooves, but in general, that's it.
@leandrovm45
@leandrovm45 Жыл бұрын
@@genericpersonx333 With modernized I mean: add a railed dust cover, different stock, grip...not really made a new gun. Dsa makes fals with aluminum parts, and they have the same weight as a fn scar, but have a non reciprocating charging handle, and it doesn't break optics AFAIK. It would be interesting to see a comparison between a modernized fal and other rifles. Everyone likes the ARs, but some people would like to have a side charging handle and a folding stock.
