I believe that the master collection uses linear scaling which is why mgs1 looks like blurry sheeet, they should have used nearest neighbour for the cleanest piexels. I have heard that they may be addressing this in a coming patch, but still shows the minimal effort made for these repackaged ports

The blurriness in the MGS1 emulation is due to the default configuration of the emulators, which has the bilinear filter enabled, so they didn't even configure it.

Especially when the content of the game is divided based on discs, I think it's really cool when that's preserved. It's also a thing in games like Final Fantasy VIII Remastered where you're traveling through the overworld, and while it doesn't remind you to switch discs if you go back to different regions that haven't changed it _will_ tell you when you've cleared the story content of a disc on a brief intermission screen just as the original did. Those disc split points dramatically changed the structure of games to accommodate them so there's really no way to ever fully remove their influence on the original title.

One thing I would push back on is that I like that they left in the disc swap animation. It reminds me a bit of the intermission built in to films like Lawrence of Arabia. Yeah, you could just cut that out of the home video releases, but it would take away from the context around the film.

Another thing I push back on is the pressure sensitive buttons. I know some like them but you guys have won this war long enough I find them very difficult, often inconsistent, quite exhausting to use for prolonged periods of time, and its way to heavily dependent on the quality of your controller, something a simple button to aim would solve for all of those problems that was generated by it being pressure sensitive. I like a button that can just be used to aim so Ill agree to an option to enable it but I will not agree to it being the set standard.

The coolant spray being on the right stick was part of the Xbox HD collection too. It’s intended to replace the pressure sensitive control of the spray. It never made sense anyway considering spraying lightly with the coolant spray doesn’t actually have any function in gameplay besides maybe waking guards up slower

No. I think it's a cool feature of the PS5 controller, but I also don't find the PS5 controller to be the most comfortable.

MGS2 and MGS3 absolutely had content removed from their PS2 versions. MGS2 had a skateboarding mode where you could play as Snake or Raiden in a Tony Hawk Pro Skater style game mode, complete with a punk rock rendition of the MGS main theme. Removed from the HD collection and still absent here. MGS3 had a lot of content removed, including two game modes (online multiplayer and Snake vs Monkey mode) as well as all of the associated items and extras that came with those modes, such as Banana camo and Monkey Mask. The nightmare sequence was also removed, along with the radio conversations that referenced it.

Never played a MGS game in my life. Been waiting for a way to play the entire franchise on one console (and ideally a modern console, I really dont like digging up old units). Was really stoked to see the announcement of this collection and that there would seemingly be more collections to fill out the rest of the series. That said, even if this collection was perfect with all the features diehard fans wanted, I'd never drop full price on a collection of 20 year old games. I'll be picking this up when it hits $20 or if it goes to PS+ for free.

_The_ _Legacy_ _Collection_ was the ideal way to play these games (to include _4_ and _Peace_ _Walker_ ), though that's two generations removed now. Licensing is definitely holding it back. _4_ had Apple and Sony licensing imbedded into the game itself. _The_ _Twin_ _Snakes_ was licensed to Nintendo and Silicon Knights; legal litigation still surrounds this one. The later will probably _never_ get a re-release.

Not really going to be hard to get rid of the Ipod, just change the texture on the in game item, change the UI to say MP3 player and change the icon for it so it doesn't resemble an ipod. Could probably only take a week of work to get that done. What will be the legal issue with apple is if they had some sort of X amount of years licensing agreement. As for sony though, there is too much integrated in the game to easily rip out, let alone the actual PS3 architecture/cell processor defining how they could get it to run on modern systems. Not like sony would allow konami to have a integrated PS3 OS emulator that can be sold on nintendo and xbox consoles...PC too! They are not that stupid. Not also do you have many references to PS3 like its disc drive and a PS3 in game but snake controls the mk2 with a PS3 controller, possibly the mk2 has an aibo sony reference to it as well as it looks similar and entire mechanics revolve around the six axis. Six axis might not be too much of an issue to get around on a technical level as gyro are innately inside switch, PS5 and Possibly xbox controllers???? but there are entire dialogues on how to do things in game that references the six axis. They would have to cut these, or redub from the original VAs. I doubt konami has the will to do it, too costly. Only logical way would be to remake it from ground up on a new engine but octocamo is probably too complicated to port to say UE5 by any random team. Only skilled devs like kojimas team could do something like that. Then you will have loads of licensing for the songs and other things like food products that will need to legally be allowed or cut. Lots of legal and tech work needed to get MGS4 off of the PS3. The more fun is waiting to see how they mess it up, what they have to cut and what they attempt to do with it, I mean specifically that game. This vol 1 collection is simply emulated with certain things cut for licensing.

People forget that if you bought the MGS legacy collection the code for MGS1 is already expired since it only lasts for 10 years (2011-2021) also MGS1 doesn’t have trophies on PS3 but they do now on PS5! - also performance of 2 & 3 on PS3 dips pretty regularly down to like 30 fps at times during heavy scenes. On PS5 it’s pretty much lock 60. My only gripe with the master collection is that MGS1 is a bit blurry since it uses bilinear filter instead of integer and MGS 2 & 3 having worse texture than the PS3 version (most likely due to a bug) but those literally the ONLY negative of this collection, I dunno why people are blowing this out of proportion like it’s the worst release since GTA trilogy smh

The control scheme was changed, and not necessarily for the better, influencing how you interact with the in-game environment. An improved framerate is secondary to the fact that there are now *graphical* *tradeoffs* to consider when comparing these games to the originals. Hopefully this can all be patched, but, as is, it's a deterrent. I don't think many serious MGS fans are concerned about a 10 year old voucher or trophies.

As someone who hasn't played any of these games since their original release, This collection was always going to be a must buy. The only concern I really had was how it would be monetized and if it released in a technically compromised state. Vol 2 will be the real test though, especially if they finally manage to get MGS4 on other hardware. There's also the spin off games that could very well be included like Rising and the ACID games....

You can already do that via emulation. You need a pretty strong pc but you boot up citra in Bigscreen and change a setting in the emulator I don't remember the name of but it's pretty straight forward something to do with the 3d setting. Unless you really LOVE MGS4, don't platinum it because it'll ruin MGS4. It usually takes about 7 to 8 playthroughs to get all the emblems and if you play it over and over again, it gets tiresome. However, going after the Big Boss emblem is a lot of fun.

The dual shock two has analog face buttons that allow for the pressure sensitive feature that you talked about. It will be very difficult to simulate analog buttons on a digital controller and have it work well

My biggest concern and what I know isn't gonna happen is the special scenes from the PS2 version are locked into that version and we're most likely never gonna see them, the special The End death, the special dream sequence when you're in jail etc

For those curious: The PAL / NTSC difference came from the televisions back then. In Europe they used PAL TVs with 50 Hz and in Japan and the US, they had the NTSC TVs with 60 Hz. This is also the reason why in most Nintendo consoles (that use cartridges) there are different shapes of cartridges or even "obstructions" that made non-compatible cartridge impossible to fit into the Super Famicom / SNES or even the N64. However: Nowadays the TVs dont care for this difference anymore. And monitors even less. It would have not mattered to have used the 60 Hz version except for: Thats probably how Hideo Kojima intended it to be since it was his known and used set up.

Usually the reason 50hz versions of old games still get released is because those are the versions that are localised for European regions, so for licensing and language support it's easier to use those versions than to use the American 60hz versions. Not sure if that's specifically whats happening in this case for this collection, but it's what often happens with other rereleased games in Europe such as Code Veronica

MGS released with only 1 language option localised to you’re country even here in europe. So thats likely not the reason. More likely its that the original PAL releases contain additional content and a lot (a shocking amount) of bug fixes compared to the NTSC version.

slight correction, the PAL version runs at 50hz yes, but is capped at half refresh rate, so it runs at 25FPS and the game speed isnt adjusted, therefore it runs about 17% slower

Modders will likely find a way to increase the internal resolution of the PC versions beyond 720p, and hopefully increase the output resolution beyond 1080p too.

I really encourage people to actually watch the video instead of commenting too early. The biggest issue that this video highlighted is MGS 1 running in 50hz for european players, which you can at least fix by picking the US package when prompted before running the game. Everything else is really great. The video is arguing that its underwhelming because it didn't do much more than what it's supposed to (and that it was also made by bluepoint first and just a copy paste job of that). It's not a bad collection at all.

MGS was always like this. Every single entry. It always starts off somewhat realistic, and at a certain point (usually 2-3 hours into the game) it starts to get weird, and by the end you have huge robots fighting each other. What sold me as a kid back then, is how they sell you everything that is happening as legit, and make it look legit.

Yeah it's insane that in many ways they're still far more advanced than modern games, the enemy AI and the amount of ways you can mess with it is just far far better than the vast majority of AAA games. Snake Eater of course being the best. Being able to destroy or poison food supplies to make guards weaker in the surrounding areas is incredible.

Playing through mgs1 on ps5 I’m more than happy with this collection. No it’s not a love letter (Konami is incapable of love) but it’s still metal gear. I’m just happy to not being forced to find and buy a ps3 and HD/legacy collection as retro prices have ballooned out of control. You can either be upset that the games aren’t flawless ports that offer the most minor of details, or you can be happy that you can play mgs on the same console you’ve got Spider-Man 2 on.

Yeah, basically, agree. If you never played these games, I'd recommend getting it. If you dont want to go through the trouble through emulation or just dont want go through the trouble of getting the master collection on ps3 get this. Its a good entry to the franchise for new casual players even if it doesnt have all the bells and whistles of emulation and modding which I'd recommend if you have the tools.

i never expected this to be anything more than a current gen port of the HD collection. so im not going to complain too much here. i'll assume it still has that awkward pause of lag when loading up a codec in MGS2 and 3. and its a shame they didnt put in the effort to bring back the Dracula nightmare. but, again, Vol 1 being "fine" is exactly what i expected. Volume 2, however, is where they're going to pass or fail. if they actually put in the time and effort to create a miracle port of MGS4, then they will deserve my praise. but im not expecting that. if i had to guess, id say the three games in Vol 2 are going to be ACID, Peace Walker, and Portable Ops. which would be gross, but...unsurprising.

Downloaded the collection today. Haven’t started playing it yet, but only ever played MGS on PS1 (one of my favorite games as a teen). Been wanting to play 2 & 3 for years but didn’t want to have to use my PS2. I replayed MGS when the PS Mini came out and still love it. Don’t care that it’s not a perfect collection, just happy to have the games on my PS4. Will be nice to play at night while the wife is sleeping with a wireless controller & headset plugged in. I’m not into most new games (hate micro transactions & most online stuff) so I’ve held off on a PS5 although I’ll be getting the slim when it releases. All my PS4 games are stored on an external drive so I can just plug that into the 5 and start playing. Gonna cook a steak tomorrow evening, open a nice microbrew beer and get down on the games.

How does MGS1 look on the big screen? People say it looks blurry due to it’s upscaling but I remember playing the original non scaled 240p version on PS3 and it was a complete pixelated mess on my TV

How was it? I remember when i first played MGS2 back then. Remember the game came out in 2001. The graphics in this game were INSANE back then. I couldnt believe my eyes, and the 1st person aiming in a 3rd person game was actually extremely insane aswell. The cutscenes with the motion tracking, everything felt like the future. THESE games were truly next gen games, unlike the laughing stock of launch titles on the PS4 back then, like Ghosts or BF4 which looked only slightly better than on PS3

My parents bought me a used PS2 from a relative when I was about 13 or 14, with the console the guy included three games: NBA Street Vol. 2, DMC 2 and MGS2. Out of those I played MGS2 the most, I must've beaten it at least 4 or 5 times, I still remember the impression that mind-blowing crazy fuckery that is its ending sequence had on me. Then I learned there was a MGS3 and I remember watching videos and seeing listings online for months and months until I saved enough money to buy it. My parents didn't trust online shopping at the time so my only hope was to go to my local gamestop and pray they had a used copy lying around, this must have been like 2010 or 2011 so the game was by no means new at the time. I still remember how I felt when I saw it, it was the original red/orange cover art, no manuals tho but still, I was pretty lucky to find it. I beat it only once because pretty soon after I had to sell my console but I kept my copy of MGS3, at the time my favorite game of all time. After moving I displaced it and to this day I don't know where it is. I'm writing this minutes after beating it for the second time in the Master Collection. Sure. I can't believe how much of the game I still remembered. The first few hours were really really familiar, up until the point you learn about The Boss' defection I felt like I had played it a thousand times over. After that I remembered mostly cutscenes, the boss fights and a few gameplay segments/areas. It speaks to the impact this game had on me that after playing it only once as a pretty young teenager I was still able to recall a lot of key moments.

I think a lot of people don’t know, MGS1 Integral and MGS2 Subsistence exist on PC with keyboard/mouse support. They were both released natively on PC just a few years after each game’s respective release.

Oh boy, do I wish I could say that I'm surprised it came out like this. Despite it being slapped together from other remasters, it is still nice to be able to play them on modern hardware. I am a huge metal gear solid fan, and I'll probably pick this up on sale for the Switch.

Personal opinion MGS2 and MGS3 on PS2 are ahead of its time in this master collection and Even now it’s still impressive. My only issue is the price, I can wait until get lower.

Fully agree with you about the lack of pressure sensitive face buttons, I loved that in MGS2 on PS2 and sorely miss it, it's such a shame that hasn't been brought back to modern controllers. While I agree that they should have put some effort into the emulation software in order to improve the visuals [or contact modders to get the rights to apply mods to improve textures/hire them to do the work,] I can't personally call it an underwhelming collection for two reasons: 1) We finally have MGS1 on Xbox [PLEASE let vol 2 include a port of MGS4, even if just the unreleased 360 version, since I doubt even Konami can get the PS3 MGS4 running stable through emulation.] 2) You get a minimum of 4 versions of MGS1 to play. - Original PAL - Original US - Original Japanese [complete with lack of difficulty modes to make getting Fox/Big Boss rank easier.] - Integral [Plus Special Missions, and, VR Missions.]

I have to disagree with you on getting mgs4 on modern consoles ps3 emulators are getting more and more accessible most decent pcs can run them just fine so modern consoles would easily be able to if konami actually put a bit of effort into it, not even mentioning they could remaster the game instead making it run and look better like the hd collection

@@thescottishbant2298 ps3 emulators are getting better, but MGS4 still isn't stable on them. The PS3's architecture is just so wierd that even devs struggled with it. That's why, if the files were retained, they should use the unrealeased (unfinished?) 360 version as the base for a port.

Though even with a remake, I'd still want a port (though It would HAVE to be at least semi-remastered to replace the stuff that required six-axis, like the knockoff mantis dolls.)

I do find it interesting that NTSC/PAL versions run at different speeds due to their framerate, because it still happens to this day! Instead of using deltatime (which devs should), some parts of games rely on framerate for things like movement. Even Fallout 76 was like this at launch, which was why looking at the floor made you walk faster because your framerate would go up. This is also present in a lot of FromSoftware's work, which is why they're limited to 60fps - and it also might be a reason for why theres no rerelease of Bloodborne, because its designed to run at 30fps

as for the blurry look, they might be upscaling it from it's original resolution using a bicubic or bi-linear filter - while the PS1version obviously didn't. They might be using this upscale as a way to make up for them just emulating the original, and as such not being able to render at an actually higher resolution

It is not really they run at different speeds, its more of an optical thing, the screen is refreshing frames at a slower rate on 50hz, even if the game is playing at 30fps on both, its why high level PC monitors with high refresh rates look better for games than TVs, and visa versa for movies (films). Visually it will look smoother but in reality the speeds the game is playing is the same. This is only an issue for people who played the game at 60hz back in the day. They wont be used to the 50htz refresh rate. Keep in mind even on a 8k TV this is a PS1 game playing at 50hz so it will look even more sluggish than it did on CRT TVs Still if you complain about petty stuff like this for 20 year old games its stupid. If it was a 2023 game playing in 50hz I would understand but all it is doing is emulating the OG 50hz game. i would assume it was more feasibly viably to rip the NTSC audio files over the PAL game than the other way around. Also to add, NTSC IS the inferior version. That is the one that has censorship, in 1 or the other locations it is censored. the European PAL will be the better version out of all to emulate as no censorship. Like MGS2 (and 3?) never got EE so the European version is always the better version. They got EE in the re-releases. I still see Americans cry about the difficulty of MGS2 EE to this day while I was playing it as a teenager, no kills no death, no rations under 3 hours. They even nerfed the torture sequences in the HD remake because of american tears of the difficulty on EE that was included with substance.

I do all of my gaming on PC these days; I'm very familiar with emulation but had so many little issues running MGS2 (PS2 and PS3 versions) that I bought it on Steam just to try. Has definitely been the most painless way to play on a modern PC for me. Mods easily to high res too. Not a fan of modern Konami but they seem to have at least (mostly) preserved Bluepoint's quality work.

Don’t know if it was a review copy thing but you definitely can change aspect ratio, add scan lines even change the banners to the side if you’re not in full screen for MGS1. So I think that’s less of a problem for the actual product now. Might also have updated the look overall because the image didn’t feel blurry at all for me.
