@CatchupGirl71 The newer viewers never saw this, so some think somehow that the fans of L&L condone rape and geez we were taken on such a ride which included re-writes as well, to make this couple work(once they made Luke Spencer stick around for more than 13 weeks). .part of the reason that made me want to post this. It is controversial.. but also so much more complicated than some choose to think. That controversy, complications is what made it such deep, thought provoking entertainment.

It was a RE-WRITE and we all knew it, and accepted it... because it meant we could watch and route for Luke and Laura with a clear conscience.. and we wanted to because there has never been anything like the chemistry between Tony Geary and Genie Francis. (which they realized after the fact) But it was there, did exist, so everyone who talks about the L&L fans as some sickos who condoned the act of a rapist just need to see the scene... doesn't matter what it was before this scene really.

I don't understand how grown women can't get past the rape of Laura turning into love. Kids, teenagers, yes. But most women have seen enough of relationships to know women can forgive almost anything. Even if a man hits them, they'll believe he's sorry bc they love him. They're NEVER sorry! But Luke was, and his pain was obvious and long. And over time, not only did he prove she could trust him, but he risked his life multiple times for her. Put that together with the fact she'd been attracted to him to start with, and he encouraged her to report it ( until it was no longer safe bc of Smith), it's very easy to believe. Considering the level of respect he always showed her, and the way Scotty never did, I don't get why anyone was surprised at all.

They were changing the story, but about 20 years later, they did a great job of bringing it back, and giving it a grim reality that was necessary for closure for the characters and the fans. IMHO I don't think the revisit of the rape was necessary. It was "required" because of the times that had changed in the late '90's. Society has become very sensitive about so many things. And now there is a need to overcompensate with things from the past. The past was the past, things were different, people were different. It is unwise to put today's values and mores onto another era. After all this show was just entertainment and Luke and Laura were fantasy. All of us in those days "knew" it was fantasy. That's what we loved about it. Years later, in a "reality" era, people wanted to throw cold water all over it. And nowadays people want to rob us of our joy of these two characters, because its the "in" thing to do. That's a sad commentary about this world today. Rant over, returning you back to your regular scheduled program. ;-)

@@2006bbbb1 I agree that the past should be left in the past unless the past somehow has a way of rearing its ugly head in the future. LNL were such an iconic couple that did translate for some in such an emotional way that I think the writers did give the rape revisit some justice. It's significant for some to acknowledge that it was rape (can call it date rape)...especially with soaps drawing in a majority female audience. You would like to believe that truth, values and tenets stand the test of time no matter the era. So acknowledging that an intimate violation in a relationship like what took place between LNL is rape is a good thing...especially for scenes like this where Laura adopts a different philosophy 🙄. You are correct, LNL are fantasy and most should be able to divorce fantasy from reality. But I have come to appreciate for some, that is not always the case especially based on what they may have experienced. Just two cents to add to the conversation 😊.

Nope. As Laura just said. They made love at the disco. End of subject. The wonderful adventure began from here and the Wedding, the return with Lucky and getting Frank Smith and then LuLu's birth. Writers decided to recreate to make a political statement (note the Jackilyn Zeman ad when Elizabeth was raped). This was politics in hollywood. Now in 2021, it's much much worse.

After watching the story from the beginning, I can see why Laura was conflicted over the rape, and now is admitting that it wasn't, that it was love. The way she acted after the rape, and the way they grew closer, she grew up. It may be confusing, but the way the writers handled the chemistry and the whole rape story was brilliant in a way. It was brutal and it was rape, but the aftermath turned out to be a brilliant love story.

@stefan103 It was rape. Luke called it rape when he talked about it but there were several times when Laura said she didn't know if it was really rape because she wanted him. She is in denial about it and the look on his face when she says "just like we made love in the disco" shows that he knows she is in denial about what really happened. He knows he messed her up and that guilt carries over into what is going on with Luke on the show today.
@zannemarie65915 жыл бұрын
The rape is very complicated and it has to do with many things including the times in which this was written. You can't really look at that through the lens of today and have it make sense at all. In the 1970's when this is written, it's an acceptable writing trope, hard as that is to understand, to have a "forced seduction" and there were sociological reasons for that. You have to remember that this was written at the beginning of the rage of bodice rippers with all of their forced seduction scenes. Luke and Laura play very close to that model, the difference being that we're seeing it with two actors with amazing chemistry benefiting from amazing writing rather than in a bodice ripper. The reason for the popularity of bodice rippers and why this story could be turned to seduction during that time is because of the way women were viewed. Women were good girls or bad girls with no inbetween. If you were raped back then, it was your fault no matter what happened. It was the way you dressed or talked or where you were or whatever. In addition, the view of sex was still very repressed. The "free love" concept was still not generally accepted. Good girls did not have sex with men they didn't marry if they didn't want to be labeled and married girls/women who found out their lives were dull and a prison did not verbally acknowledge that anything was missing because that would get you labeled a bad girl. Hence the bodice ripper is born. It lets good girls off the hook. They can read about amazing chemistry and hot sex between couples because it's cloaked in rape. "She couldn't help it." Once the heroine is forced into it, she can gradually acknowledge she likes it and tame the wild, alpha male into marriage thereby making the whole thing legitimate. If you look at them through that lens and you know the story with the clips between Luke sabotaging the car and showing up at college to take classes, it starts to make more sense. Luke and Laura talked all the time. She confided in him a great deal about her real feelings. The bond was there already when she used the credit card to get Scotty's books. I don't think these clips include Scotty's reaction to that, but you see enough to see that Scotty infantalizes Laura and treats her more like a father than a husband. Luke is the one who understands why she did what she did and gives her a job to pay off the debt. He understands the need for independence. He has his own hang ups which is why he's attracted to her, but Laura is attracted to Luke exactly because there is a side of Laura that has always been wild. She ran away and joined a cult. She had an affair with Rick's friend at 15. Laura is not a goody two shoes but she feels she has to be so she suppresses that and tries to play the role of Doctor's daughter and Lawyer's wife. It's only Luke who can see Laura as she is and not judge her. Many, many of us who were older and saw the very early parts of Luke and Laura thought she was attracted to him before the rape scene. So when the rape occurs, knowing Laura's willingness to live in denial (see also David Hamilton's murder), we hear her say no, no, but we don't know what happens between then and afterward. We don't know if this is rape or forced seduction or just Laura can't accept that she has now slipped of the ledge of good girl to bad girl and can't face it. We don't know and any of those can be true. In addition, there is the common trope of the day which says good girl has forced seduction, realizes what she's been missing, complication bring her and anti-hero together and they fall in love. It's something recognizable and known in that time. The fact that she won't name him afterward just puts the nail in the coffin. Writing that there will always be a part of her that loves him is another nail. (By the way, no one in PC believed she was raped as soon as that came out.) The final nail is when she rescues Luke and goes on the run with him. In that time period, they didn't have a soap audience over 18 that believed it was rape because that was the general society belief at that time. The change hadn't occurred yet. By the way, this was part of what was studied in Feminist Literature classes. Not just LnL1's popularity, but the whole popularity of the bodice ripper.

Thank you for sharing that. It helps make sense of this was it rape or not debate. I know the writers were under pressure to declare it wasn't in order to move Luke and Laura back together. At 18, I bought it. It wasn't rape in our minds then after seeing this scene, but the whole societal view of rape as being the woman's fault and girls"crying rape" so they would continue to be seen was very prevalent and damaging and this scene perpetuated that. None of the teens and young adults watching this at the time realized this until years later or after experiencing it ourselves.

I have a few questions. Laura was supposed to be 18 in this time line but she’s in a bar drinking wine. In 1980/81 was the drinking age younger then 21, or is ok because this a TV show? Also when this first aired I was like 12 and was hooked on Luke and Laura and never realized the age difference was like 12 years.

The drinking age was 18 in 1980, raised to 19 in 1981, then to 21 the year after that. All those who were 18 in 1980 were grandfathered in and could still drink even though we were not 21. I was one, same age as Laura/Genie.
Leslie: Rick stop making father noises. ROFL! Laura is his daughter Leslie! :) Of course he is going to make father noises. :)

As a rape victim myself, I'm always disgusted when Luke refers to it as making love in the sailboat scene & Laura refers to it here the same way. Let's not forget that many rape victims are murdered & will never get to tell their story. And i don't have any problem with how GH depicted the story, just don't insult our intelligence & call it making love. Maybe our sweet, little, teenage Laura likes it extremely rough but I'm not convinced. Granted, she must have been intrigued by something because she hung out with him a lot more after the rape. She certainly had no fear of him. Maybe she liked the dance or the kiss, then things went sideways. It was written that she liked Luke & was attracted to him prior. They were probably alone at the disco many times at closing time. She was tired & probably having "50 Shades of Grey" fantasies about Luke - i would. I like how conflicted Laura was about it for a year because that's what happens in real life. GM could have been decades ahead of time if she could've called it date rape & extreme workplace sexual harassment. Maybe it could've been an incentive to pass laws to protect women. I like that soaps can explore topics like this over a long time, as opposed to movies. Her understanding and forgiveness were great qualities that the world could use today. Luke's redemption story was the Summer on the Run. He was patient and didn't force himself on her, even though everyone could understand the temptation. He let her decide, on her own, without any seduction. There was no need to throw in these random scenes referring to it as making love.

You are entitled to your opinion... mine just doesn't typically include thinking the worst of people... saying that the writers made a mockery of their fans is not something I would ever agree with. There are so many factors that come into play... mostly business, the bottom line, and the almighty dollar. I do not believe it was anybody's intention to make the "fans" look stupid. Just circumstances, and pressures from higher up, and show business in general.

Yeah u got that right! It was basic ratings to get more fans. Look bottom line it was a rapewhich turned into a subduction . Because of mostly out of fear on Laura’s side because ofDavid Hamilton. Laura’s fear was so great things became confusing dark and very mix up in both there mines. Love turned into forever. The children came realty came back hit them square in the face. Love sometimes dose some crazy ass life altering chances later on in life. We come to a crossing the road then we have to make better decisions we never thought possible. Love goes into a different direction and you find yourself either alone or with someone you thought would ever happen.you are not alone but still are still breathing from one day to the next. Not happy just excepting life until the end. Thanks Love. Rosie.

Well sorry Sus but between you and me the higher up don’t know anything about being true blue . The last thing they don’t either is being true to there storyline . They wrote it ...as for money and rating. I say bull, bull all the way those writers lied to us just to keep us watching... well you guys mess up really BIG...and that dear Writers is My Honest Opinion on the truth about The storyline of Luke & his Laura’s true love on GH.. So go ahead and lie all you want you men lead us to the sweet waters of there love. Then throw ice cold water on what was once a brilliant storyline ever written on day time TV. You guys ruin a very happy GH fans like no other. Well there you go right out the GH window. Unhappily yours. Rosie

supermom23 I know, Lesley is so cool you want to hang out with her. Lesley was the reason I tuned into GH when I was really young before Laura came along. I did not have a good mother and Lesley represented to me what a mother should be. I loved her and I was very very sad when Denise was let go.

Rebekah Gore Not exactly. It was rape and we all could see that (remember her shock when Jessie helped her in the emergency room?) but at this point in the show, the writers were doing some fancy backpeddling, trying to "reframe" it as a seduction type thing because of the huge popularity of these two together. Tony and Genie were just reading the lines given them, neither was that comfortable with the "rewrite."

To quote character Luke, "she was bruised, she was battered and she was destroyed". He said it over and over, a crazed, drunken, broken shell of a man. He pleaded guilty to her, asked her forgiveness over and over. She felt conflicted because she wouldn't desert him at the disco, she wanted to help her friend who said he was going to die, but she said Scotty and I can help you. She forgave him because Laura knew he loved her, she wanted to help this man because she is a caring compassionate young 17 yo.

@@sharonjonsy9412 That quote of Luke's is also a rewrite. After the rape, in the hospital, when Jessie talks to Rick on the phone, she specifically tells him that she was not beaten or cut, so decide for yourself the true reality. Each of us do. YMMV

Drinking age was 18 in NY then.
@christineadams12844 жыл бұрын
Ione Stevens The drinking age of 21 had not been upped until 1985 for NY. New York's drinking age was raised from 18 to 19 in 1982. Legislature raised the drinking age from 19 to 21, effective December 1, 1985.

Yes, you TOTALLY HAVE IT. It was a rewrite. They didn't realize at the time that they had magic in a bottle & they tried to rewrite the rape. It wasn't a great idea, and IMO they should've left it alone & ignored it like they had been doing but it was a TOTAL rewrite & it's the one time I've been disappointed with GM, but what can you do. She made her choice & we all had to live with it.

No they weren't which makes their acting all the more amazing. IRL, TG was a lot older than GF. He was very aware of her age and very protective of her, but they had acting chemistry that was out of this world. It was magic. Just pure magic.
