I am also very surprised by this test. I have similar configurations, the S5+24-105mm OIS and the GH5+12-60mm OIS and I always felt that GH5 stabilization was much better for handheld. Not so much for stable situations where S5 internal IBIS is great but for any situation where I had to shoot while walking or moving. I always kept my GH5 as B-cam only because of its great IBIS, furthermore, I just decided to replace my GH5 by GH6 for that precise reason.

Yessir, I believe I agree with your assessment and conclusion. A couple years ago I photographed a family wedding using M43 Panasonic gear...I was quite unhappy with the results. Certainly some of that could be attributed to my lack of experience at the time, but the small sensor made it so much harder in my opinion. In the last couple months, I have filmed one wedding and photographed another with a couple of S5's and lenses and everything just looked so good. My wife (who has very little experience with cameras) helped during the reception and even many of her very underexposed shots looked great with minimal work in lightroom. Like you said, the choice really isnt between the IBIS, but other factors. I definitely prefer M43 for my hiking and adventure photography.
@JoshCameron2 жыл бұрын
Hey Christopher, glad you agree with me on this. Sensor size does actually have quite a large effect on the actual image rendering in my opinion, and I could immediately tell the different between the GH6 and my S5 when I first got hands on with the crop sensor. The M43 stuff still has its place though, but if we're going for pure image quality then you can't beat a full frame sensor :)

Great content Josh! Your video + other commentaries confirm the power of the GH6 but as an S5 owner, I agree with how well it holds up against this new release, considering it's an entry level Full Frame camera that's almost 2 years old; I can also imagine a lot of people are concerned about the trade-off on sensor size, given the differences in price, but then again i'm still blown away by how good the GH4 units (6 years old!!!) look when I use them for multicam shoots alongside the S5 as a handheld unit. Both the S5 & GH6 excel at image quality & stabilisation and would clearly work well together too! Fingers crossed for a firmware update on the S5 to add some cool features! (I doubt they'll ever add All-Intra compression codecs for 4k despite the UHS-II compatibility - although this keeps my Atomos units busy haha!)

Thanks for the support and the kind words, truly appreciate it! Yeah it’s crazy how good the Lumix cameras are, even the older ones. The GH5 is still an absolute beast and I love the footage I see from that thing. The S5 will have superior image quality for years to come I think. It would be great to see ALL-I in the S5, but tbh I think my first request would be 4K 120p as that was an amazing feature to use in the GH6!

I had the gh1 all the way through the gh5s - and have had the S5 since it came out. When i go back through all my footage over the years the shots that resonate were the fast lens shots on the gh series - especially the Voigtalnder 25 f.095. and the Panny 42.5 f1.7 They just resonate. And this look is close to what the S5 at f2.8 and f4.0 looks like I have huge regret that so many of my GH shots from the years look totally boring (ie when i didn't shoot with fast glass) - although to be hinest those shots were functional for things like building site shots and wide angle architecture. But for anything with people in it f2.8 and above in M43 just doesn't cut it. For sure the GH series (and especially the GH6) are crazy full featured cameras - but when it comes to having an image that sings - the S5 sensor with the good Pro glass (not so much the 20-60 and 25-105 kit lenses though which get you back to a more GH m43 look) is just too gorgeous - the Gh series images just look boring in comparison. A valid option is GH6 with ONLY fast glass (f 1.7 and faster for anything under 35mm ) -
@JoshCameron2 жыл бұрын
I really agree with you here. The S5 paired with a decent prime is just sooo nice and the image it creates is incredible. Unfortunately I didn’t have any super fast lenses to use with the GH6 when I tested it out, but I’m sure I would have enjoyed the image a lot more if I did have something faster!

Hi, it’s not an IBIS comparison is it. Would it not have been better to test the IBIS in both cameras? In all tests you had the lens stabilisation on. So as a Consequence we still really don’t know how comparable they are or which is better.
@JoshCameron2 жыл бұрын
Hey Chloe, good to hear from you! I understand totally what you're saying, this test definitely doesn't show the IBIS as a standalone thing and is more so about how the IBIS works with Lens IS too. Of course, if someone is really wanting to utilise handheld video to its full potential, then chances are they would favour a lens with I.S since it makes more of a difference than anything else in my opinion. I wish I could have done a test without lens IS as well, but the lenses I had available to me and that would have been a fair comparison between the two were both lenses that had IS, and unfortunately you can't switch on the IBIS and have the Lens IS off; as soon as you switch off lens IS, it disables the IBIS too... Sorry about this!

Thanks Josh, another good video. I'm currently straddled between two systems, with an S5 and a G9, and currently unsure which way to leap for the future. One thing that becomes obvious is that the difference in lens sizes and weight becomes quickly more apparent as soon as you go beyond short telephoto in FF. I recently added the 70-300mm (too heavily discounted to pass) but actually now question how much I'm going to use that lens, as I don't do wildlife for example. That said, I do prefer the look of the S5, and also appreciate how I can switch between photo and video modes and retain last settings on both, whereas the G9 just remembers your last adjustment. Have they fixed that on the GH6?

I think the GH6 is better in stabilization than the S5. Both are amazing, and world's better than Fuji or Sony, and also clearly better than Canon. In my view when you're shooting hand held stabilization is more important than autofocus. One can, with practice, learn to perform excellent manual focus, and have the control with it that cannot be achieve by any AF systems. But this is not true with IBIS. No amount of practice can fix it when it's poor. And this, more than even the color, is Sony's achilles heel. Why? Because they did not have the foresight to abandon the E mount system, which is too small. Everyone else has made the switch to a larger diameter mounting system. Big problem for sony.

Good comparison man, I see kind of a "subspace warp" stabilization (aka AFX warp stabilizer) effect on the GH6, not sure if it's my perception only, but I see it very faint, and I know it's not the actual focus of this video, but the image "texture" or quality from the S5 to me wins hands down, it comes across "softer" or more like what you would get from a blackmagic (I know it could be different settings on the GH6, lens etc) , very good comparison
