I think it's totally possible for it to be successful. I'd want to see new mechanics like ... "gunner mode" where your car goes on auto pilot while you aim and shoot. ... and when your.car dies the 1st time your driver gets flung from the car and you can try to get back to your car before you get run over. -- just little mechanical fun additions and upgrades. And I think there would need to be a bunch of ok online multiplayer brawl modes and ability to do custom modes. And you'd need modern rock like Gojira

An interesting thing to note about Twisted Metal Black with regards to the darker narrative. Since it was a darker story, most contestants who get their wish granted with no strings attached are those that have a malevolent desire. Junkyard for example, wishes to kill the man who stole his wife and so, he gets his wish. Outlaw on the other hand gets punished for actively wishing to help others. I found this detail incredibly fascinating.

Well, what else would happen in Needles' mind? Needles hates cops, feds, preachers, etc. It makes sense their endings showcase their demise as he would like it. The unhinged get their wish because it seems Needles appreciates petty revenge. And the evil get their wish, but nothing that outdoes Needles himself. Case in point is Warthog; who needs implants and surgery to achieve the homocidal tendencies that Needles has naturally. In Needles' mind he IS the greatest of all time.

I dont care what anyone says, Small Brawl is peak Twisted Metal. Me and my homie got super into black "3 months in the nuthouse" is still something we randombly crack to eachother to this day, and neither of us really touched the og PS1 games at the time, my closest connection was a couple games before jumping backing into Digimon World 2 with a friend, so we went back and played them all and Black and Small Brawl despite being so different aesthetically are the most fun. I am honestly kinda suprised anyone would think Twisted Metal 2 is more fun to actually play over even 4. But I will put it above 3. I think this is kind of why (and alluded from the last 2 hours of jaffe talking with you I heard) why the franchise could never take fully off with its split opinions.

You do a remarkable job of making things we already knew sound new and interesting. There are a few things wrong - like stating Jaffe was an employee at Singletrac - he wasn't. I also understand that while Jaffe thinks that dodging was a happy accident, he was one member of a huge team. Later he doesn't seem to know the game ran at 60 fps for example, which would have been a big deal for the team to make happen. He also has no idea about Warhawk as playable. Other people were in charge of tweaking car and weapon characteristics - that wasn't Jaffe. They almost assuredly knew a great deal of what they were doing.

2 other things worth pointing out about Twisted Metal Black. First, they put a lot of attention to the Instruction Book, it reads as the journal of one of the contestant complete with hand written notes and scribbled drawings. The other thing that still kinda impress me to this day is that the intro movie for all characters features an opening sequence where the camera travels from outside the asylum up to the door of their cell. But almost each character has this sequence edited in a different way that showcase the psyche of the character. That's like more than 10 different ways to edit the same piece of animation that could have easily be kept the same for all characters.

Then I started Sweet Tooth’s story and it scared me so much I had to pick a new character. I went to Brimstone next and the shot of him with red eyes and a demonic voice gave me nightmares. This put War Of The Monsters in context for me. They wanted to make a brawler with cars, and people weren’t understanding it So you take similar 3D movement controls, but instead of forcing cars into combat you use anthropomorphic things and give them combos. The only changeup is being able to climb and impale other fighters. War Of The Monsters is a car combat game if that makes sense.

Twisted Metal, 2, Black and the 2012 version are all masterpieces to me with a shitload of nostalgia. Parts 1 and 2 I played through with nearly all characters and a shitload of split screen versus. Two was an amazing improvement. They all had thier own feel. I definately viewed the series as a kind of fighting game. Playing versus in splitscreen really had alot of depth, even though you could see the other persons screen. Black was an awesome introduction to the PS2 along with Grand Theft Auto 3. Really enjoyed DMC on a smaller scale as well. Great launch period. Unfortunately the 2012 version didnt seem to do that well. It didnt help that the online crashed for about 3 months , mid game, before it was finally fixed. Alot of players probably dropped off during that period. The online was one of my favorite online games , but after a brief period it became very hard to even get in a game, once it was finally fixed. Tons of replay with the singleplayer as well. The hardest setting was alot of fun. One of the games I want to see most on PS5 is another Twisted Metal. Not a cash in though. Small Brawl had a horrendous story, but I had some fun with it on emulation gameplay wise. The environments are cool since it makes small areas like a kitchen seem huge. No where near as good as the main entries but a fun game to playthrough. I recently went through on hard mode. The boss fights were not the highlight. Head On was one of the better unknown versions. The ps2 version has the most content. Id like to check out Rogue Trip Vacation 2012 again. I returned it years ago. Its made by the same company but I dont know who was involved. There is also a submarine combat game on PS1 by the same team. Not sure if that is any good. Forgot what its called.

If this were remade today we would get 90% of the characters and levels locked behind a paywall. And a lot of development time would go towards the mandatory battle royale mode.

Actually if this was remade today.you would get a similar result to Shadow Of The Colossus 2018/Demon's Souls 2020 with nothing being locked behind a paywall nor have developers waste time on adding a pointless tacked on mode thanks entirely to Twisted Metal being a Sony Interactive Entertainment/PlayStation IP

18:23 I'm replaying Black right now, and honestly, yeah, I have to agree with you to some extent. I typically dislike comic book cutscenes for their lack of... Presentation. But in Black the animation and sounds are presented in such a way that even the stills come to life. I was honestly sickened to my stomach by the game because of the combined grotesqueness of the game's dark stylings: from the character bios, to the cutscenes, and the frantic gameplay with screams galore; I had to put it down and come back later. And that I did. Now I am having a great time trying to unlock Minion once again.

I think one of the major changes from the PSP version to the PS2 version of Head-On was the massive decrease in speed, something that probably contributed to some preferring the pace of the PSP version.

While I couldn't capture the footage myself, I played the PSP version again and it feels a tad slower to me. But I think that has to do with the fact that the framerate is much lower. Still great for its time and platform, though.

My problem with Twisted Metal 2012 was that it limited the characters… I really wanted the narratives to return. :’(

I remember reading the tmb booklet and it gives you the impression that crazy 8 had ESP which is how he was able to “see” things even without his eyes

It was always so tragic that instead of having their life fixed, caused by whatever someone did, they just wanted revenge on whoever screwed them over...

I bought my copy of Black day one, but couldn't play it cause I couldn't afford a PS2 at the time. lol Really seeing the first interviews pop up for Black at the time made me save my money to buy the system just to play it. Still have my copy as well.

Will never forget Twisted Metal Black being the flagship PS2 Summer of 2001 game playing on large promo screens at the food court in an up-scale Canadian local mall.
