The developers have mentioned that you start the game not being very good at anything, but you can train to use more Samurai or Ninja weapons down different weapon paths. They also mentioned there will be a defense stamina bar, where you will be invulnerable for the duration of that bar, but almost instantly die if you can't block.

About the player character holding his blade sideways: I saw a video on a gaming channel where they made the observation that the developer playing the game always held the triangle button, only releasing it for the actual strike, so it could well be that this stance is the result of the character "holding" a strike.

Personally, I feel the way Jin holds the sword may be a reference to Lone Wolf And Cub... Considering that the game is more about capturing the spirit of samurai media, like Akira Kurosawa's films, rather than the historical accuracy of the period, it makes sense (at least to me) that it would also reference one of the most well known samurai comics out there.

Not only Tsushima is located between the korean peninsula and the japanese islands, but we have to say that the mongolian ability to build ships was inferior to the experience of the koreans, then the fleet was directly of korean production. Moreover, formally the request of invasion of Japan was sent directly by the Wang of Korea (Chungnyeol) to Kublai Khan (probably forced, because Goryeo was formally free but in practice was slave of the mongol empire at that period).

Im Mongolian and i do study medieval history relating to mongol empire. I got couple of things to mention. 1. Mongols launched their invasion from korean peninsula. Majority of the soldiers were Koreans and some Chinese. I know this will not be mentioned because they will not wanna piss off Koreans and especially Chinese fans. So they will just change this fact. I don't care how many mongols they kill. We are like the Nazis at this point. But for sake of god, keep some accuracy there. By that time Mongol empire was unification of hundreds of ethnic groups under mongol rule, there could have been so many variety of people represented. 2. The language was just horrendous. Atrocious accent. Why couldn't they hire Mongolians living in America for voice actors like they did for Netflix Marco Polo. How hard would it be? They would gladly do it for you, since Hollywood and the west show our culture with so many error we are literally dying for a correct portrayal. 3. The armors were questionable. You can find accurate armor photos from museums all over the internet. Since the team went for anachronistic aesthetics for the Japanese themselves then why would they even bother. Again, don't tell me oh this is just a video game man chill. I wont. And also don't tell me to wait for the game to be released and then make my statement. This is what they show to us.
@Lo-tf6qt6 жыл бұрын
It's nice to see a Mongolian on the internet , you hardly see any these days
@GrahamChapman5 жыл бұрын
1. While true, I can still understand their decision if they decide not make the enemies we'll cut down in droves too varied. After all, there's probably only so many NPC faces they can squeeze into one game. It's basically a question of pragmaticism. 2. See, this is the kinda criticism that I care about. I don't understand the Mongolian language, don't even know what it sounds like with proper pronounciation, but for the sake of authenticity and immersion, I still want it to sound right, and I don't think it's too much to demand of Sucker Punch that they hire a dozen-or-so Mongols to record voice lines. 3. They've already covered this in interviews: Sucker Punch are not aiming for an accurate historical portrayal of the invasion of Tsushima with this game. Rather, they're trying to capture the spirit of what people associate samurai with in order to make it the best samurai experience. They basically take inspiration from Akira Kurosawa's movies rather than history books.

Excellent video! Many of these are the points I have brought up in my facebook page, but you have presented them much better than I did. I would also like to add that the mongol warrior's armor should look more like Yuan Dynasty armor since it was Khubilai Khan who sent the invasion force and he had conquered China for a good number of years by that time. The Monk's robe also looks Korean instead of Japanese. It might be explainable by the fact that Tsushima is very close to Korea, but it is still looked strange at a glance.

@KnightsWithoutATable6 жыл бұрын
Yari and bow added to this with stances would be really cool. Each has an advantage and would suit different play styles. It would also be cool if there was a Kempo option that used bare hands and/or bare hand and tanto. Have a skill tree with major branches of each for more options and play styles. You could also add in weapon pick ups on the battle field (get more arrows, pick up a yari) and have disarms and weapon damage. A sword could need repairing after some time in battle if it took a bad block or hit hard armor. It wouldn't be broken and could still cause injury, it would just be ineffective, so picking up another blade even though you are not used to it would be a good idea. As far as disarms, even the ray or shark skin handle wraps can not prevent a weapon from slipping out of your hands in battle. Fatigue of you hands, mud, water, sweat, and blood are going to loosen your grip. This is why swordsmanship has you train to have a solid grip, but it will not always guarantee that you won't loose your sword. Weapons breaking if used after being damaged would be a nice mechanic too. Applying all these to NPC's as well, except for maybe picking up other weapons, and at a higher chance (since they are not the protagonist and a badass) would make the combat really satisfying and add even more depth to the game. Another weapon that could be added would be kanabo of various types (i.e. tetsubo is one), but I am unsure of the historical use of them, but they are iconic and would make a fun weapon to use for for the player and great for NPCs to have as well.

The style of combat you are talking about is in the game “sword of the samurai” it has 3 stances and each stance has unique attack which each slash or stab is chosen by you and the deferent style of block, you can actually choice how you attack and what attack you use it is very realistic in this way. The blocking is ALL about timing and if you miss you can get hit and die. There are also attack parry when opponents use combos and counter the attack with a one hit kill. Each stance has a maximum of 7 hit combo or 6 and it has multiple counter which can kill at first attack. All stance of kenjutsu and kendo is implemented. Everything is all about timing and right stance to use or attack against opponents choice of stance and attack. As you get older also your stats varies in skills, speed, power etc etc, there are many stats. Now if you implement this type of combat of realism into this game it would be the most realistic game of samurai combat ever created. But it is very very tactical style of gaming, which in this days days of gaming I am not certain if people might handle is mechanics since games now days is mostly about spamming the buttons. It’s a very old game, same era as the way of the samurai in ps2. Check it out. Sword of the samurai.

The stance used by the MC exists because from the 3rd person perspective it is the best way for the player to see the blade or the whole katana. It's the same thing as in "star wars: force unleashed 1/2" the MC holds the blade/s in reverse so you can actually see the weapon most of the time.
@MrCyclos19856 жыл бұрын
Hey, Metatron! I really enjoy your videos. In fact, I have just subscribed. I am also a practitioner of Kenjutsu and, to me, it seems that the protagonist´s stance is a very stylized version of a katate wakigamae. The Heiho Niten Itchi Ryu has a similar kamae, however it has two swords instead of one (the tachi being held in a similar position). In any case, the use of such style would be completely anachronistic during the time period being shown in the game. Would love to discuss further, if you wish to. On another note, the bending over during horse ride with a katana puts me off. Any one who ever held a real katana would know that the sword would simply slip out of the scabbard. Thanks for the great video.

Interesting video, mate :) Though there is something you should know, there is actually a trailer before this one that shows off more of the environments, armour and narrative. The general gist is that Jin, the protagonist, is defeated by the Mongols and has to change up his tactics, he starts killing from the shadows and becomes a Shinobi (The Ghost of Tsushima). So while I expect some historical accuracies, it is an open-world action/adventure stealth game first and foremost. The stance changing would definitely be a welcome feature though.

a lot people claiming they got the armor of Mongols wrong. We don't have many surviving specimen, the best exhibits can be found in Russian museums, but the armour of Mongols likely have been different from the ones worn by warrior in the Invasion of Japan. In Mongolian historical dramas what is usually shown are mail armour with a chest plate, leather armour with chest plate. I haven't seen much lamellar. But these movies show a period after the fall of Yuan. Although, I can't say much about the armour, the haircut on the Mongols are spot on

Thanks for this video, Metatron. I was interested in finding out some historical perspective on this game. When they were talking about this game they kept on referencing samurai movies and I believe most of them were set in the edo period. Plus, I think some historical accuracy will be sacrificed to fulfill the iconic samurai image from pop culture. So, don't be surprised if they mention bushido and feature the really iconic samurai armour from later periods. I think bows might be in the game, but I'm not sure about the yari. To your average joe, samurai = katana. I'm not sure what the combat will be like. There is only so realistic you can make combat in a game with the controllers available to us before it become tedious and not fun. I agree with having stances (but you can't have that many) for different types of attacks. The key is just making it simple enough to easily memorize and complex enough to be challenging for your average gamer. (thank you for spelling armour the proper way, like a civilized man.)

Graphics look good and I think they will look kind of the same in release too, but I wouldn't go that far in saying it will be the best looking game. Cleverly, the camera was almost constantly facing the setting/rising sun, which makes every game, even an old one, look good. During the parts when the sun and its reflections weren't in-your-face the game looked much more standard. Still a very good standard mind you. AI also doubt there will be directional stances, for a very simple reason: the camera isn't facing your character's back during combat. That would make choosing direction of attacks and blocks pretty unconfortable and confusing. By the way great and interesting video, Metatron. As always.

I think the developer said they are not going for historical accuracy. It's set in a real time period but as for the story and combat, it's fantasy and their interpretation of real events. I think the developers could be excused from mixing time periods, but it's good to know nonetheless. Combat looks pretty grounded which is awesome. It looks like it won't take many well-timed swings to kill people, so I don't think it will feel like the Witcher. That stance looks very awkward. What I learned from my stint in kendo and kenjutsu was that the hand closest to the handguard is not the "driving" hand when performing a cut. The hand gripping the bottom of the handle (closest to the pommel) is where the force is. And from a perspective of physics, it makes the most sense since the further up the handle you grip the sword, the LESS lever action you get. In kendo, the hand closest to the handguard is supposed to be the "guiding" hand that manouevers the blade.

Ive seen a similar stance in a kung fu demostration, but doesnt look exactly the same it was the blade in front and the other hand was at the back with the palm showing as if pushing something something back with it
@gingercore696 жыл бұрын
that there MIGHT be a stance like that, so we should look for other martial arts that may or may not have that stance, just to know if there IS such a stance in a martial arts... it wouldnt make it historicaly acurate, but we would know a bit more about something, and knowledge is rarely a bad thing... even less when its about something trivial, it cant be bad to know about it...

Bushido blade was an awesome game. I was very young when I started playing that, pretty sure my old man still has it

I think it's called Iaijutsu, a technique of counter-attacking from the draw (correct me if I am wrong). I'm really hoping for that discipline to be available. It appears to be in the trailer...kind of. I am still excited for this game. Love the video as always.

I don't think deeper complexity necassarily makes a game's combat more satisfying. I really hate it when people make that argument. The Souls games and Bloodborne don't have particularly complex combat, but the combat in those games is pretty top notch, at least in terms of the boss fights.

Is there any truth to what I've heard about the use of lacquered bamboo armour?

Nioh does have 3 stances? Also - blocking just before the sword hits you IS in these games, and it does give you an advantage - they just call it parrying. They keep the just hold a button to block system in because frankly, parry timing is just too hard for a lot of people. They said they are going for a difficulty like say Horizon - they want it to be accessible to the average gamer - not only hardcore skilled gamers. As long as it is diverse and fluid/responsive and fun - it does not need to be overly challenging.

Could you give us a sort of history lesson on this event. I would love to see more about this battle and how it actually unfolded.

You should check Sekiro out as well...it has the parry mechanics that you were talking about...

That sword fighting gameplay mechanic remind me of ps2 game Fu-Un Shinsengumi. In wayvof samurai your style is based on your sword, but in Fu-un Shinsengumi you can build your own fighting style based on several stance and can switching your stance in game.

Shadows Die Twice appears to primarily feature parries without constant blocks. Just what you want!
