You will hear all kinds of songs that people claim the opening piano is a riff on, but it's actually an homage to an ABBA piano opening... and it is being played on the same piano. And the melody is a riff on Alice Cooper's "Poison." Tobias wears his inspirations on his sleeve and doesn't shy away from noting them. People will say he "ripped off" a song, but it's not like he's pretending he's not leaning into established musical progressions. But then so were the people who wrote the "original" on which he based his. He writes to hooks. He writes to musical memory with his own twist. That is why almost all his songs feel both familiar and unique.

Even the happiest-sounding pop-heavy Ghost songs have dark lyrics hiding behind that amazing sound. They tackle some heavy topics while staying catchy as hell. They're also often written in such a way as to have more than one meaning. Don't feel bad about discovering them late - there are a few other reactors that are in the same place.

You don't need to be ashamed. I can tell you that Joe Elliott of Def Leppard loves this tune so much he decided to reach out to Tobias and ask if they could release it together. So there is another version with Tobias and Joe on vocals you can listen to. You could also see Ghost Chapter 15 to get the full story. The quote is Job 10:1 by the way.

The piano opening hit me as Foreigner - Cold As Ice, so I know what you mean! So glad you reacted to this song, I thought you’d vibe with it and the vibes were immaculate! This is an interesting conundrum of dark lyrics wrapped in a pretty poppy package that makes it easier to jam out to, but still underlying sinister feeling. You’re right about the band not being heavily featured in most videos, I think they create a more cinematic experience to go along with the songs instead of just a performance. High key recommend the Rats music video next, great track with a whacky video!

For me, the piano reminded me of Hold the Line by Toto. I just "discovered" Ghost this week and I am down the rabbit hole

The quote is what was at the start of the video, Job 10:1: “I loathe my very life; therefore I will give free rein to my complaint and speak out in the bitterness of my soul.

The beginning of the vid - as the piano starts - gives you the key to the onscreen quote at the end of the vid -- a Bible passage. Job 10:1 “I loathe my own life; I will give full vent to my complaint; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul."

Ghost's live shows are something to be experienced. It's like going back to the late 70s or 80s when rock shows were BIG and fun. And I do still love seeing bands that are stripped down and aren't flashy and just play the music, but Ghost is a level of live performance that has an important place in the rock world. As for the perception they are going to be "heavy" due to their look, it is Tobias' whole subversion of expectation that probably amplifies the experience of seeing them play, because you expect it to be something, so when it's something else it tickles something in your brain. Not to mention, the whole lore and stage antics are meant to be funny, like Monty Python or something, where it's humor with a message about powerful establishments having way too much power and influence over what you are SUPPOSED TO feel. And this is probably why it works on people from all political spectrums, even though Tobias is very clearly an uber progressive minded Swede. Because we do sense that some entity has too much power. There is this human condition that makes us fall in line, then refuse and resist it whether it makes logical sense or not. EDIT: I forgot to mention, Tobias' first band was Repugnant which was death metal. He used to wear blood on his face and dark makeup around his eyes. That is actually the most likely reference in "Mary On A Cross" when he says "just like Blood Mary." He's referencing his character from Repugnant.

You might want to go back, and start at the beginning, and move forward through their excellent catalog.

Listen to Hold the Line by Toto. You’ll know why there is familiarity to the pianos. Tobias is PERFECT at pulling from the 80’s and making new. Spillways is in the top 5 songs I absolutely will always love.

Apparently, that's Abba's piano that was left in the studio and they used it.

There's a ton of great stuff on the Impera album, but you've now looked at three, I think? Looking back into their catalogue, I'd recommend *Cirice,* which means a lot to the fans, *Square Hammer* and *Rats.* For darker stuff, Year Zero (especially live versions) and Faith. For beauty, He is, Life Eternal and Darkness at the Heart of My Love (that one is also on Impera). So many good songs in their back catalogue though. Also Kiss the Go-Goat if you like to laugh (it's supposedly set in 1969!).
