Yes, the Amiga version's music was amazing. One of the few games I used to just leave running so I could listen to the music. I see OSG doesn't agree, but I thought it fitted the game beautifully with its folksy Jethro Tull-ish vibe that complemented the fairy-tale feel of the game. I mean, c'mon: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHLEpKRmit2gqc0 It was amazing hearing such subtle flutin' coming out of my humble Amiga :)

yeah i've always been Amiga/C64 headstrong but in recent years Ive found, well, the 'competitors' I never gave a chance because of my blind worship are actually pretty awesome and I am finding myself rarely playing the ports I used to. Having said that I still wouldnt trade my time again with those systems -- trading tapes and disks at school was one of the best things ever! :D

Honorable mention for your honorable mention: the version of Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts included in the Capcom Classics Collection for PS2. It runs much smoother than the original SNES game, which had a lot of slowdown. I'm not sure if this is due to accidentally inaccurate emulation timing or if they intentionally overclocked the emulator. I'm also not sure if the OG Xbox version is like this because I don't have it. These Capcom Collections also have really ugly video output due to bilinear filtering that cannot be disabled.

I can't really fault your list, even though I am a Spectrum and Amiga fan given the list I can see why the home computers placed so low. As for the ST and Amiga versions, I think they are pretty close. I have played both versions and I can't actually decide which is better. In terms of gameplay they are pretty much identical. Graphically they are similar although the ST looks a little more zoomed in (possibly to help with scrolling) and it also lack some of the detailed backgrounds that the Amiga version has although that doesn't actually impact on gameplay. Musically however is where they differ wildly and I am very torn. On the one hand you have the ST which has more of a spooky, eerie title screen tune and first level whereas the Amiga has gone for a heavy folk song style for the title screen reminiscent of Jethro Tull. I don't know why the Amiga didn't have a souped up version of the music used for the ST. Levels 2, 3 and 4 have the same tune although again it is a choice as to whether you prefer the sampled music version of the Amiga or the AY chip verion of the ST. If I have to give an edge to one of them in terms of the tunes themselves it would be the Amiga but I much prefer the title music on the ST as a game tune. However I feel both of them lose a little for not having spot effects and such during game play, only music. I would love to have seen the Amiga have essentially the ST soundtrack and free up a channel for some sound effects as it is an empty experience playing in silence and games like Turrican showed that the Amiga was more than capable of doing music and sound effects together (heck Ghosts & Goblins on the Amiga showed that).

Hi from up the road in Walker mate. Great video as usual but disagree with a few things. The Amiga version and the Tim Follin soundrack is amazing, atmospheric, spooky, and in my opinion, fits in well with the subject of the game. And the Snes super ghouls n ghosts was by far the best version of the game, admittedly, not a true conversion, but still in the family with the same music, characters etc. but hey, it's all about opinions, and that's what makes video games great! Ghouls 'n' Ghosts already had music that was perfectly appropriate for the game (it's one of my personal favourite video game theme tunes) and gave it much of its character. I didn't like the Amiga or the C64/Atari ST versions. I like the start of the Amiga tune as far as taking a darker more ambient approach but then there's this more frantic section which just spoils it for me. While the C64/Atari ST music is kind of cool in its own right, it doesn't seem to fit the game. For some reason I think it would have fit a game where you're a spy or something. What really gets me though is that the Amiga version of Ghosts 'n' Goblins was an incredibly well done arcade port (minor control issues such as not being able to turn and fire mid-air aside). This felt SO amateurish! Unfortunately it's something that was common on the Amiga. So many of its ports and even a fair amount of games that originated on Amiga had a janky, homebrew vibe to them. I know that homebrew vibe is part of its charm for some, and allegedly part of the reason so many ports turned out how they did is because developers of home ports for computers often didn't have access to resources such as source code. They essentially had to play the game and then try to recreate it. The Amiga also received quite a few ports from lower spec machines and the games weren't optimised to take advantage of its hardware. I just can't help but wonder how some of the ports would have turned out in the hands of talented developers that could get the best out of the hardware with all the resources they needed (time, money and relevant code/assets). Its hardware at the time of its release was extremely powerful and we could have had some really impressive arcade ports. Something I felt hurt the experience of gaming on the Amiga was the adherence to one button control schemes. The Amiga could support at least three buttons and I read somewhere that four button controllers were theoretically possible. At the very least, two button controllers should have been standard from the beginning. So many games would have benefited from not being restricted to one button.

Why do people say that Super G&G Is a different game to the original G&G? 🤔 I've played the heck out of both this and the original G&G and they are very similar, the only difference is that Super has double jump and not multi directional firing. Its a bit slower than the original but the levels, graphics design, music and gameplay is almost the same! I just find it strange 🤷‍♂️

I think that it was correct to place the C64 version that low. Two things that I really like about it though is the music and the characterful exaggerated cartoonish arm swing of the main character when he's running. Polar opposite to the really stiff looking main character on the Amstrad.

Android version should be at the lowest place, because no serious gamer even plays a game with crap controls. Otherwise you are not judging the game, but only the graphics... Also: obviously comparisons spreading over generations of hardware usually are balanced towards the lower end system in so far, that you usually rate the game in relation to the possibilities of the system and not on an absolute scale, because the later scheme doesn't make any sense, as you would for 95% only rate the hardware performance instead of the individual versions quality. It's kind of common to put 8 and 16 bit systems on one scale, because these mostly coexisted the majority of their lifespan. But not 32 bit systems, because these where released much later and of course differ too much. Also the later release date makes the versions of older games which got released for the 32 bit systems more like remakes than being an 'original', no matter what they are called..
@oldstylegaming

I compare all official releases mate. The android one I think can be used with a controller too... I didnt have a wireless controller that could connect to my phone so I had to go with the screen controls. I compare them on all aspects gameplay sound and graphics ... the hardware doesn't really come into it as a game is an experience ... I dont play a game and thing this is actually better than other versions cos it pushes the 8bit to the limit .... there is no way that the mobile version is lower than the amstrad or spectrum even with the crappy controls
