Episode 97
Ghouls 'N Ghosts is not just the incredible sequel to Ghosts 'N Goblins, but it was also developer Capcom's debut on the Sega Genesis! It was a bold move to bring one of their biggest arcade hits to Nintendo's rival.
The original Ghosts 'N Goblins is notorious for being one of the most difficult video games ever made, but it was also a huge commercial success in both the arcades, and on the NES! The sequel manages to deliver a challenge that will get your blood pumping, but doesn't feel as frustrating as the original game. There are plenty of new weapons and abilities to help you out in this one, and overall it makes the entire experience more enjoyable.
So how did this game get made? In this episode we'll find out, then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
* The best way to complete EVERY STAGE!
* The SECRET of the TREASURE CHESTS - Where to find them, and when to open them!
* Strategies for completing the more difficult SECOND LOOP!
* SHORTCUTS to get you through difficult areas quickly!
* How to fight a RED GARGOYLE (Red Arremer) and live to tell about!
* TONS of SECRET CODES! Stage Selects, Japanese language mode, and even invincibility!
* HOW to get the ULTIMATE WEAPON!
* Secrets to surviving the MONSTER TONGUES!
* MULTIPLE STRATEGIES for EVERY BOSS, even LOKI himself... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

The most underrated channel on KZbin. I don't care what genre you pick, when it was released, or what console it was on. If it's UCBVG I'm going to watch the entire thing. The disciplined timing of weekly uploads, with some of the highest quality content, is a workload most people just arnt capable of. Not to mention two of the most adorable helper pups on KZbin. For all the hard work you put into our entertainment, thank you sir. Please remember to take time for yourself whenever needed. Comments are usually family friendly here, so I won't say what I think about anyone who would disagree with that. edit: 100K is coming up! Hopefully people are getting the word out to support this awesome channel!

The original arcade version of this game weighed over 5 megabytes. Yuji Naka was able to pare the entire thing down to 5 megabits (640k) for the Mega Drive home release which is really something.

I've played this enough to make an educated guess that the one thing Naka-san wasn't going to sacrifice when whittling the code down was playability. Everything felt smooth and responsive, with no input latency. If you missed a jump or walked into an enemy hitbox, it was all on the player.

Yuji Naka does not get nearly as much credit as he should most of Segas elite get ignored. He should easily be up there with Miyamoto. The dood was a God tier coder in the days when that was insanely difficult and you had no tools to help smooth the process

I really wish they had given him a larger ROM size to work with. The graphical detail is quite compromised in comparison to the arcade version, or even the 8 megabit SuperGrafx port. For the Sega port, they cut the intro, and really had to cut down on the number of unique graphics tiles in the Sega port, to squeeze it into that 5 megabits. This gives the port a rather plain look, even though the Genesis is graphically capable of much more. Gameplay-wise, it really nails it though.

@@homiedclown Yeah, that is so damn true. Look at Golden Axe. It was damn good, but if they had a bigger size cartridge to work with, who knows how much better the earlier arcade to Genesis game ports could have been...

I agree, but dont agree. Super metroid has horror elements.. but in my opinion, it is less horror oriented, and more isolation and exploration oriented. It has the rare jump scared like resident evil, or silent hill, or even the suffering had. Those were made to be horror, and scare the plauer through environment and gameplay. Metroid was exploritory and anticipatory fear, not the environmental fear developed by games like resident evil, or silent hill. I agree, but i disagree.

This is the first one I beat. My brother owned it. Didn't own the one for nes until after the snes was out but a kid in my neighborhood had it. God it was great back then. We owned damn near everything between us kids. We had the most and then almost 40 cartridges were stolen. You know it was a kid because they broke in and games were the only thing touched(glove, and joystick but no systems. Oh and 1 co2 pellet gun lol).they didn't take any of our turboG16 stuff and we still had games to play as they only took stuff from downstairs and all our systems were left. The cops did not care in the least. Sure it was a crime but They got in without damaging anything (we had several ways to enter when we didn't have our key) took only games ...Mom said he didn't believe that many could have been taken anyway. I didn't know that at the time. Eventually did take down the nes though.

I absolutely love this game, I finally beat it. I had to search the Internet to figure out what I was doing wrong, I did not realize you needed that weapon. Everything about this game is the most awesome of awesomeness. The music is what caps it off for me. The gameplay is fantastic, the bosses are a bit weak, but there’s enough difficulty in this game to make up for that. This game is the pinnacle of the 80s in my opinion.

I'm not sure which Makaimura game is my favorite (assuming the Firebrand spinoffs don't count), but I do think that the SEGA Master System version of Ghouls & Ghosts is the most interesting. The stages are largely the same as in this version, but you get upgrades to your weapons, armor, helmet, etc. that are permanent, and you get to choose the order in which you obtain them. It's a really neat twist on the franchise, and since the armor upgrades give you an actual lifebar, it's a lot less intimidating than many other games in the franchise. The GBA version of Super Ghouls & Ghosts is cool too; nothing quite to that level, but they have another mode (I think it's called Arrange Mode) that switches up the order of the stages, even throwing in a few from this game. Both are definitely worth checking out.

Back in 89 the Genesis came with some card that you sent out for a free game and Ghouls n Ghosts was one of the options. So I selected it and sent the card out. I wound up totally forgetting about it because things took forever back in those days. Like a month later the package with the game finally arrived and my mom picked it up from the mail guy. She then asked me, "who the hell is Sega and why is he sending packages to a 10 year old".

Starfox 64. Its where the 64 started, and where i suppose the series will as well. Asking for super mario 64 or donkey kong 64, is an investment, and we can expect 2 or more weeks to see that video. But starfox 64 is possible to film in a week. I dont expect to see goldeneye, or jet force gemini anytime soon though. For him to maintain a weekly schedule, we would be looking at three week long parts. Im okay with that, cause those games are involved, but hes trying to keep it simple where he can. Plus there is a ton of 16 and 32 bit games he can work on, so the 64 is probably a couple years out. But if we keep supporting him, im sure he will progress to there. I mean, he is slowly progressing through our childhood nostalgia. Its a growth process, so be patient, he will get there. I like that he takes the time to relive what we remember, bjt he doesnt progress too fast, it was a learning and growing experience, and his channel reflects that.

"get the magic power from the goodess of power" It's as if Google Translate went back in time and scripted the ending for the first loop. 😆 Oh, and the second loop has its own Google Translate moment, but this one just appears to be jumbling 2 letters at the end of one word. "the Ghouls'n Ghosts' world migth be restored someday" Just some moments that amused me, since I haven't actually played the game myself and don't see an opportunity to do so arising for me unless/until Ghouls 'N Ghosts gets added to the Sega app on Nintendo Switch.

This one of my favorite Genesis games. It’s the only Ghosts n Goblins franchise game I’ve ever finished but I’ve finished it dozens of times. When Genesis first came out, it had the pack in game Altered Beast. Not too long after to promote console sales, they started packing in a coupon for a free game among select titles. I started saving when the Genesis was released and my best friend got one, and by the time I had enough money they were running this promotion. By this time, my friend had nearly half of the games offered so I grabbed the one of the two he didn’t own that wasn’t a sports game… and that game was Ghouls n Ghosts. I was so blown away by the graphics and creepy music… being a long time of Castlevania, it was right up my alley. It was a long time before I completed this game… I remember finishing the first loop and not completing the second because I could never hang onto the required weapon and hitting a point where you couldn’t (or at least I couldn’t figure out) how to proceed without starting a 3rd loop. By this time, I got distracted by other games… your Sword of Vermillion, Phantasy Star and countless clearings of Streets of Rage. Right around the time the Sega Saturn was taking a market share turn for the worse… Sega seemed desperate to push units. Toy stores and department stores were discounting Sega Game Gear, Sega Nomad and the Genesis 3 consoles for only $50!! I bought the Nomad and started playing my old Genesis games before bed, or mornings I didn’t want to get out of bed. This is when I really out the time and effort into mastering Ghouls n Ghosts. Once I finished it for the first time… I started beating it like once a week to remember all the patterns. I would beat it for friends so they could watch and they were always really impressed because they had all quit thinking the game was impossible. It was probably the first game people considered “really hard” that I could beat that my friends couldn’t… which only endeared the game to me more.

Man, you sound like the Sega nut I was back in the day too. It's a mixed blessing being a grown adult and having tons of games in my collection now, but back then, I and most of my friends only had 7 or 8 different games each. So, we played our same games again and again till we got really good at them. I did eventually do the 2-loop clear on this game too.

Great video, but you missed two secrets: 1. In level two you can shoot the spinning fire windmill, and sparks will fly off. 2. When getting the key at the end of the levels, if you jump towards the key, press up and shoot up as you're getting the key it will say nice catch! Also, I think you are misunderstanding the ending text, it is in past tense , before the game.

Love your channel, I’ve been watching since Zelda II! Do you post sources for your introduction anywhere? Your intro’s are great and sometimes I want to know a little more. It’s great to watch your subscribers count steadily grow each week, keep it up!

This was a game that I kind of enjoyed in the arcades BUT once I got to the moving tongue statues Argh! I was getting swallowed everytime I jumped. You Can Beat Videogames (and his dogs) help me to ease those Vietnam arcade memories and the post traumatic stress.

The Ghouls 'n Ghosts games are great fun, even if I end up dying hundreds of times before beating them. One strategy I use for the second run is to get the Psycho Blaster on Stage 4 and use it to kill the Gatekeeper. That way I already have it on Stage 5, and can use it to clobber the Red Arremers!

Resurrection is actually my favorite in the series now. Controls and plays a lot like the Genesis version but with expanded magic, levels, and difficulty options. Legendary difficulty makes the previous games seem easy.
