The “Year of Return, Ghana 2019” was a major landmark marketing campaign targeting the African - American and Diaspora Market to mark 400 years of the first enslaved African arriving in Jamestown Virginia. The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture led the project in collaboration with the Office of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President, the Panafest Foundation and the Adinkra Group of USA.
The Year of Return sort to make Ghana the focus for millions of African descendants reacting to their marginalisation by tracing their ancestry and identity. By this, Ghana became the beacon for African people living on the continent and the diaspora.
The United States Congress had 2018 passed an Act H.R. 1242 - 400 Years of African-American which was in itself a historically significant milestone. Ghana is the gateway to Africa capitalised on its unique position as the location for 75 per cent of the slave dungeons built on the west coast of Africa. The favourable government policy of making it a national priority to extend a hand of welcome back home to Africans in the diaspora served as the catalyst for the campaign.
Currently, there are still numerous imposing European forts and castles harbouring harrowing reminders of an intense and complex history of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade in our land over centuries. This on its own has made Ghana the focus for millions of African descendants.
Since the initiative began, numerous diasporans and African Americans have troop the country.. Dentaa spoke to Prince Anthony Bart-Appiah & Del Titus Bawuah
to find out the need for Diasporans and if we have the right structures in place to receive our brothers and sisters?

Great interview and input by both interviewees. However, we have to accept not all diasporans will end up settling. Changes needs to be made to systems in Ghana. I don't believe they should be solely targeted at making things comfortable for the diasporans. It should be for all Ghanaians, both local and returnees.

I’ve seen this happen here when so many people from NY moved to Atlanta. They caused the prices if the homes there to go up making prices too high for the locals there.

Ghana has some work to do. The infrastructure, the road, affordable housing and housing regulations and making sure they have legitimate agents, they also need to have more stable jobs for the locals. A lot of African Americans want to relocate to Ghana and they have been to Ghana and have stayed in Ghana..the people of Ghana are wounderful however a lot of infrastructure needs to be done... especially with the roads and making sure the youth have opportunity. I have personally stayed in Ghana and it was a good experience and I will be returning.

For kids you have to give them a business regimen and an outlook without using defeatist terms like “you gotta work hard, you must crawl before walk” Instead uplift them. Teach them to work smart. Most of all us African Americans must put Ghanians first and work to help one another. Another term I hate is “that’s western science”. These terms hold us back tremendously. As the term goes - Science is never wrong, it only gained more information.

This is awesome. As a successful repatriate, now in my 9 year since I first touched the Motherland, this perspective is SOOOO REFRESHING and NEEDED. I think not only do we also need an "opposite" perspective (from the diasporans), but also, something I have been thinking of being a party of developing, a platform where both "slave descendant" diasporans and 1st & 2nd generation Western Africans can UNITE on a platform similar to this and have productive discussions. There are some of us that are in our 60’s and above that are retired (some twice or more) that would like to just return to the home of our Ancestors. Maybe not to start a business but I’m sure we can contribute in other ways. As for myself I have a BS in Business Management and a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. @@Oyzatt It is indeed muddy water for us who are much over 60, who will not be good fits for the youthful dynamism that this original home continent needs. In my case, managing my arthritis is enough work for me, but as a former senior computer analyst I wish this consciousness had been there 30 years earlier. Africa needs rapid advancement into the technological age. Agriculture and agricultural science need to be top priorities. It is a heavy lift to sustain a rapidly growing population of 1.5 billion people. Much of the investments could come from the rich diaspora to supplement the wealth that’s already there, but is now focused on foreign tax havens. There needs to be a growth of awareness all around. I read of Mao tseTung saying triumphantly at the Gate of Heavenly Peace, ‘Never again will the Chinese people be insulted’. Black and brown peoples’ situation is far more complicated than the Chinese situation was then, but, in the interest of survival, a start must be made. In my opinion, Kwame Nkrumah could have been the Mao of Africa., but the weak links that contributed to his demise were there, and are still there to be exploited.

@@elbonde is a complex situation and depending on how one looks at it, will determine if one will eventually move to Ghana or not. Because is not just about moving physically but also mentally, because one must be willing to adjust and learn a way of living which in my opinion, not everyone is ready to unbuckle on that journey of transformation. I'm a young person who my father brought to Europe when I was in my young age, but I've decided not to spend much time abroad, because the more one spends time abroad in my opinion, the harder it becomes impossible to make the transition

Interesting interview, the people promoting the movement of people outside Ghana in the diaspora should do so with deep research, promoting cultural tourism and promoting relocation are two different things, why give citizenship to anybody just because he comes on holidays. It has implications ,economically and politically. So things like taxation, voting and social services need to be looked at. Then the fact of the matter is that the private sector jobs available are limited and poor paying.an influx of labour will have consequences on wages downward, those same people will also have problems with insufficient pay, especially as accommodation and cost of living is high,especially if your family lifestyle is foreign, think imported foods, expensive education, holidays abroad. I have noticed that non African economic migrants are more realistic, they stay in low cost accommodation and even eat local foods, they take tro tro. And try to live within a tight budget. African returnees feel they are superior to the local Lower Middle class and working class and feel they need to live like Wealthy people. Getting caught in showing off etc. They soon run out of cash and return disappointed. My Advice is that they should use social media to communicate and form partnerships, pooling resources, financial and skills, to go into the areas of Agriculture, light industry, technology, finance and hospitality and tourism. They should leave the big cities if possible and start in big towns like Nsawam,Winneba,Sogakope,Ho , Cape Coast, Takoradi, Tamale Sunyani,and the likes. Cost of living is lower,ability to make an impact is greater, it will also get you closer to the raw materials needed to industrialise. If you stay in Accra, you can only do import dependant business or services, there is too much competition and not enough disposable income to support most. Most important, remember not every one is a gifted entrepreneur, most people are salary workers so know yourself, if you can't hustle for 3 to 10 years before making it, don't try. Just come for holidays at Christmas to enjoy and go back to 9 to 5 in the cold.

@@deloresgupton3567 I am in support of diasporan immigration, but I am talking from long experience, even members of my own family found it hard to make a living here. If you are a salaried employee the amount of good paying jobs is limited, I don't know if you are resident here, but it is far worse for this movement home, to have a high failure rate, its better for a few committed people to be successful examples, than to have large numbers of failures,eroding confidence and creating doubt in minds.it will take time for things to change in Africa. But the future looks brighter for the next generations.

I have been seeing all this conflict arising around diasporan vs. lets say "locals". I beg that we consider not looking at it as a competition. I agree that those on the continent should not be overlooked. This dynamic reminds me of this scenario..... I remember when my sister was out in the world going through difficulty, I told her to come home where my mother an I lived. I gave up my room. I eventually didn't do eough for her, I was told, but I understand the perspective of the person taken out of their home who just needs to return and then we can all regroup. then I understand the person at home waiting for their opportunity and having the comfort and familiarity of not having to start all over, but can be overlooked and surpassed. We must transform our thinking and ALWAYS THINK HOW CAN WE HAVE A WIN WIN. I THOROUGHLY BELIEVE THAT WE CAN ALL WIN IF WE THINK ABOUT EACH OTHER ALWAYS. LETS MAKE THIS TRAGEDY RIGHT. Those Tech companies in 🇺🇸 and the 🇬🇧 could never had happened without the minerals and other resources of Afrika. So, one hand feeds the other. I believe Afrika would be far more advanced if the same attention was given to Afrikans as it were to the rest of the world. Collaboration between AA and other diasporians including the help of 🇨🇳 for development has already put Afrikans ahead in a short period of time. Imagine another 2 yrs.

Positive takeaway: I would agree when he says that the productivity is lacking and needs to be improved. Also appreciated that they acknowledged that they need to involve the rest of the country and not just focus on city Center (Accra/Kumasi). Also appreciate them mentioning the lack of political engament towards to youth and the abysmal customer service. Also appreciated about discussion about developing indigenous companies. What Dentaa says about building training centres, to improve the quality of the workforce. Loved that they mentioned that the online presence needs to be improved - the shallow interconnectivity is a big issue throughout the continent particularly west and central Africa. Great analogy about the West is a step parent and Africa being a bio-parent and you cannot deny what and who you are nor give up on it. Crafting the workforce of tomorrow…really enjoyed the video.

I agree it’s not easy to get a visa. I went to Egypt and paid $25.00 in cash at airport for my visa. Not everyone in the USA can obtain a passport so the screening process is detail. So Ghana doesn’t have to screen us so intensely. I was there for the year of return. It was hell getting my Visa to come . I won’t even get into the cost. I will not let this keep me from returning and seeking citizenship. I am coming with a business not looking for a job.

Dentaa, the ghanaian diaspora are different from Afro carribeans and african Americans...at least the ghanaian diaspora understand the culture of Ghanaians, because most of them are born here and some are born in the diaspora but have first generation parents from Ghana... the ghanaian diaspora are those sending remittances to Ghana, so make that clear, and don't generalized it as african diaspora.

Dentaa, I like your question about where I would like to work as a member of the diaspora. I would start with Sanitation. There is no excuse for trash and choked gutters and there is no reason why our streets and beaches are not lined with trees. What are we waiting for? The public sector must also be sanitized. If departments want to charge premium fees for express services, they should do so instead of the unnecessary delays to attract bribes. Frustration is what drives away the diaspora. Heads must roll. We are hesitant to fire but internally, those same incompetent bosses we keep, do not hesitate out of vendetta, to transfer hard workers to remote areas. Let's challenge incompetence. Accountability is often lacking. The waiters and waitresses are not the only ones to blame for poor customer service. The government sector is worse.

Charity begins at home. I think there is an awful lot of work to be done. Customer care attitudes to ourselves and each other. Also there are lots of Ghanaians living abroad who also wish to return with skills and money. Where do they fit on this plan? How receptive are locals who have stayed home and worked hard through tough times to the entire concept of return. How primed are they to be part of this? If not efforts will be sabotaged.

They dominated Liberia and a big part of the reason for the civil war was historical resentment between these groups. People should learn from history to avoid repeating mistakes.

Still waiting for an apology from my brothers in Ghana, one of the main slavery post, for what their ancestors did to my ancestors. The unspoken secret was tribes raiding and capturing other tribes and selling them to the white man into slavery for a few pots and pans. The white man was not the one running into the bushes to capture my ancestors. these actions brought more than 300 years of enormous suffering to my ancestors in the west. I will migrate after an official apology. I am not sure who was more culpable for the enormous suffering of the slaves-the slave owners or those who captured my ancestors and sold them to the slave trades. A few African tribes got rich selling to the slave traders. The current generation of these people are well know and still rich in Africa. That is Ghana’s dirty little secret. First, apologize for the hurt your ancestors caused to mine. Over my dead body will I repatriate without an apology. You need to face up to the sins of your ancestors.

One way to resolve the diaspora problem is for the diaspora and Ghana to invest in a company that will build housing projects with the basic necessity, nothing fancy , four stories high with one, two, and three room apartments where they can rent for a very reasonable price until they are able to acquire a house. Ghana is not ready to have the diaspora relocate to the country. My wife and tried to move to Ghana from the USA but found that the Government of Ghana has not put any policies in place to encourage the diaspora to move to Ghana. For instance, the Ghanaian High Commission has no diaspora desk or phone number for the diaspora to answer questions. There is no information whatsoever on the Embassy website for those of us wishing to move to Ghana. What we realized is that Ghana's pronouncements of the Year of the Return and Beyond the Return is 'hogwash or hot air. The visa system for African Americans and other African diasporas must be reviewed to encourage them to want to move to Ghana.

There are Parks in Accra, but that's not enough, the legon botanical gardens have a play ground for children, there's also afua Sutherland Park for children, and currently a private investor is building a water park at Adentan, so my brother, don't just complain, and if you think things are that bad, just roll your sleeves and get your hands dirty, because government alone can't do it all.... The Europeans and Chinese are investing in the ghanaian economy, some are building private schools, some are investing in industrialization, some are building malls, and they're not complaining, they already knew the challenges, and they're making a lot of gain by solving the problems, that's what we want from the diaspora but not people like you.
