gasped out loud hearing sean’s description of his compulsions, this whole conversation about OCD was so validating and relieving, no one ever talks about the guilt - years into recovery now, there are dozens of years-long tics i stopped in therapy or do automatically now

i am so relieved to hear about OCD talked about in a real and raw way. i saw a therapist the first time bc certain sounds caused intrusive thoughts of harm. as i’ve gotten older they’ve gotten grosser but less common. you really do just have to accept the thought and keep going. in HS i didn’t do that and felt like i was delusional and that i was “hallucinating a normal life while doing horrific crimes”. i was sitting in math class.

@Carebearritual28 күн бұрын
@@crinyx3388 yeah. being a decade out from the start of my treatment now, i really find a lot of the ocd thoughts almost funny. like, okay brain why did you show me that? wacko. it’s easier if you separate “you” and “your brain” because in reality, the part of your brain that has OCD is specifically NOT you

@@Carebearritual easier said than done… especially with certain subtypes it can be so challenging.. I’m a geotechnical engineer who studied hurricane katrina. The problem with the levees in New Orleans started in the design phase. The army corps of engineers did not follow their own specifications when designing the levees and ignored “outliers” in their soil data. Once the hurricane hit that did begin diverting water from “important areas” to minority and lower income communities but ultimately the levees failed bc of bad design and overlooking soil data. and that bad design and ignoring specifications for the levees in lower income areas is corrupt in it of itself

A lot of us there knew that beforehand too. Maybe not to the degree that you did, but there was knowledge mixed with deep cynicism about what was told to us. I'm 40, and for my _entire life_ I heard "All it's going to take is one bad storm, and we're gone." I lost everything in the hurricane I was in NOLA at the time and that's where the minimal, important things went. My journals, birth certificates etc, family photos. I was being represented by a gallery who hadn't stored my work properly, lost all of that too (that was a ton of work gone and a ton of money I will never make, insurance covered practically nothing for me). Friends & I evacuated to my Mom's house in Alabama, then her house lost the roof & everything was destroyed. My Dad's & sister's places in Alabama all flooded badly too. I know people who died needing medical care, one who died evacuating when he had an asthma attack. I know someone who was shot & left to die in the dirty water. I saw things that still give me nightmares, and probably always will. I didn't think about it for years, just shoved it down & woke up screaming & sobbing a lot. I've gotten help. But I don't think I will ever get past it. New Orleans isn't the same for me now. I've been back a few times. I have friends who are working hard at bringing it back, but that's not where I am now and I don't want to go back even though it was my first & deepest home. I feel the same way about Baltimore now (though I also don't live there anymore), and I'm still enjoying exploring the DMV area.

Oh wow... I've never ever felt this seen, hearing someone with OCD speaking about OCD and how OCD truly is. I could relate to everything Sean said 100%. The age OCD started to fully raise its head, for me too the same age, around 14/15. I also had day long panic attacks before I got medication. Was really cathartic to hear his OCD story.

Yes I love thst its getting more common to talk casually but also accurately about mental health stuff. Alot of times the medical descriptions are so formal it doesnt resonate as much as hearing another person living it day to day
@daughterofaking90037 күн бұрын
Usually us with OCD know that our ticks are ridiculous and or not going to “save us” but we have this NEED to do it regardless. If you don’t do your ritual or thing it will eat you all night or day and give you anxiety attacks, you’ll get paranoid , etc. As an adult now I’m able to stop myself from wanting or needing to do random things but that doesn’t stop the thoughts from coming and me needing to remind myself this is all in my head. It’s a very lonely and scary disorder. You are in constant mental survival mode and no one around you might even know what you’re thinking or going through. My faith and prayers honestly is what has helped me through the years.

The intrusive thoughts while driving are some of the scariest. Not that they aren’t all scary but being in the car feels so vulnerable. I came here from the reddit clip and loved every minute. Y’all touched on a ton of interesting topics and it was nice to get that info and perspectives from an organic conversation. Will definitely be watching more of these. I appreciate more conversations about ocd and what it really is popping up lately. It’s sth that has been misdiagnosed and misunderstood and it makes it difficult to talk about, so yeah it’s soothing somehow to see this talked about on an authentic level. Anyway i am blabbing

His description of OCD Is one of the most accurate I’ve ever heard and like mine. The only difference was my biggest intrusive thought was slicing my Mas bewbs off. I’m sure Freud would have a field day with all our boobie intrusive thoughts. I think it’s just because a mother is often a present figure. I cope mostly well these days now I’m older, though losing my Ma earlier this year has sent my anxiety to the stratosphere.

It will leave you with a greater appreciation for the resilient people of New Oreleans and an intense anger toward the powers at be who turned their back and let Americans die.

As someone who’s lived with ocd for a good portion of my life since i was a kid, without knowing it. It’s really refreshing and safe to hear it be talked about. Especially the taboo topics also, it’s something nobody wants to mention because of how taboo it is but it feels really reassuring to hear someone who’s actually got ocd acknowledging it.

I think comics should have the right to say shit in their comedy - but I also think that there is a kind of codex of comedy within which you have to move as a comedian to have this rule applied to you. Things like Gianmarco pointed out: At a rally vs. at a comedy club is a big difference. Or whether or not sth is actually sat up like a joke conceptually/ form wise.

@DjinneratorАй бұрын
These aren't my views but just how I interpreted what he meant by that. I agree that if you don't have any qualities of being autistic, then you're not on the spectrum. I think he meant that by first thinking of the spectrum as a range that includes not having characteristics of autism. So the farther you are from, say, the origin, the more intense or pronounced the set of characteristics you have that you're moving towards from the origin. Since where someone would fall on a spectrum is in relation to not being autistic, it would imply that not being autistic is fundamentally on the spectrum. But someone not autistic wouldn't actually or accurately say they're on the spectrum and autistic.
