They have great alloy option wheels with competitive weights, tubeless, and the price isn't crazy. Only downside with them is that sometimes you have to pre-order. Torn between the revolt and the ar1. Liking the ar1 a little better I think cause like you said it’s still a road bike at heart. If I get one I’d love a second wheel set. Likely a 650b with wide tires for gravel days and a 30-35c road tire for the high mile road days. Also would really like to upgrade to either the carbon d fuse bar or a other carbon bars to cut down the vibration. That would likely make it the perfect bike for me. Been riding a aluxx defy with 105 for years now. Love the bike but sick of being limited on tire choice by rim brakes.
@BlackWaterCyclist4 жыл бұрын
You would really like the Contend AR is what I'm thinking because I feel the Revolt will feel just a little too sluggish compared to what you're used to riding. I know disc brakes have really changed the game with road bikes and tire clearance. In my opinion, companies need to make their road bikes have enough clearance for 35 to 38c tires and be the light gravel bikes and then the Revolt for your more rugged long distance gravel rides. If you go with the AR1, it already has the carbon seatpost so you would just need the upgrade the handlebars.

Hi Tim, thanks for the question. I usually don't like to go lower than 38c on gravel with 40c+ as ideal but depends on your gravel roads. The Defy Geo is very similar to the Contend AR. Can the front derailleur be lowered to accommodate the smaller crankset? It appears to be bolted on and I do not know how that would work. Thanks so much.

Hi Alan, where the derailleur attaches to the hangar, it should be able to slide up and down when you loosen the bolt. You will have to also loosen the cable and adjust the front derailleur again. You should be able to make it low enough to work with the 46/30T. If not I am sure there are adapters you could use. If it doesn't work, let me know, I can try to find an adapter for you.

Dude, thanks again for your videos! I got the contend AR 1 with SLR1 36 carbon wheels, gravel setup: Conti Terra speed in the back, Terra trail in the front. Any ideas on where best to save some more weight? Do you think the SLR seatpost is a good investment? It's about 125€ upgrade price from the standard D fuse seatpost and saves about 100g. The stem will be replaced by a kalloy uno stem- should save about 50g. The rs510 crankset will be replaced with my old r7000 crankset- saving about 200g. Also I replace the conduct brakes with the RT70S rotors, that should save another 100g at least. Have you got other ideas?
@BlackWaterCyclist3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the great feedback! You sound like you have a lot of great ideas for dropping weight. Something you can try to do is make a spreadsheet with all the parts and their weights listed and the price so you get an idea of what to change out next to save as much weight for the $. After Wheels and tires, cranks are usually your next largest area. I would even look at a lighter crank if you can find one but once again you deal with more $. A crank I have been testing on the MTB is the Xcadey Power meter. That crank is only about 40 grams heavier than some of the lightest cranks out there and you get a power meter with it for around $375. I would change out the Seatpost bc the carbon will also help with comfort. Most of the time with drivetrain, I would ride what you have until it wears out and then look at upgrading.

Need a little noob help with the list you provided: What size handle bars and what size stem should I select? I'll be doing this to the AR2 I'm hunting for here in Japan land. Thank You!
@BlackWaterCyclist4 жыл бұрын
Ok so the AR 2 has the brake master cylinder on the front of the stem so you'll need to stay with the Giant stem. You won't be able to put an aero bar on that stem due to that master cylinder getting in the way. You would need a 31.8 handlebar. They make bars in different widths so depends on your shoulder width. They make them from 38-44cm ride (some make 46cm). I would just measure the width between your shoulders to help decide the width. I hope that helps. If you have anymore questions, do not hesitate to ask.

You’re the most experienced voice I know of on these bikes so I’d like to ask your opinion on bike sizing for an AR 1. I’m 5’8” approximately 170 pounds with an inseam of approximately 30.5”. On Giant’s chart that puts me between a S and M. Either bike would probably be OK but what are the pros and cons of going in the smaller or larger direction? I’ve bounced this around a while now. Thanks so much and my compliments on the video.
@BlackWaterCyclist3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, great question. You sound like me with a Large or XL. In my opinion it really depends on where you like to sit in your bike. If you have more saddle setback, then the small will probably feel better. On the other hand, if you slam your saddle forward like I do, you will prefer the longer reach of the Medium. It has more to do with balance within the wheelbase in my opinion. If you slam your saddle forward on the small, you will weight the front wheel much more than medium. A small will feel a little more lively bc of the shorter wheelbase. You can make changes with your stem or saddle position to have your body in the same position in relation to the cranks on either size so I wouldn't fret too much on that. If you have more questions on it, let me know.

I would like to thank you, this video convinced me and I got the bike 2 days ago. Also sometimes I feel a click sound while paddling from the gears, like when you shift but not as loud. Thanks
@BlackWaterCyclist4 жыл бұрын
So happy to hear you found the video beneficial. I am still riding mine today and love it. Is the sound coming from the disc brakes like a "ching" noise? That is fairly normal when you stand up to pedal but if it is doing it all the time, just need to adjust the brakes a little. Loosen the bolts, pull the brake lever hard and then tighten them back up. Since they are flatmount calipers, they can rotate when tightening them back up so may need to put a white piece of paper on the ground so you can then eyeball the rotor and the pads and manually center the caliper while tightening the bolts. I hope that made sense. As far as the ticking noise with shifting. That is probably the cable housing tightened up enough and caused a little slack in the cable which means it makes the rear derailleur off just a hair. You can adjust your barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur about 1 turn one way to see if it fixes it, if it makes it worse, turn it the other way 2 full turns. There are several videos on youtube on how to adjust a rear derailleur so that may help with the clicking noise. I plan to make a Bike 101 series of videos to explain all this and more and have it on my new site for everyone to use.

@@Piterrrxd Yes you can have a little rubbing when standing out of the saddle. That occurs on a lot of bikes with disc brakes, even mountain bikes. You can try to get your rotor as centered as possible in the caliper to reduce this but depending on the force applied when standing, you may still get that "ching" noise. It isn't harming anything mechanical, just more annoying than anything. Just be sure your axles are tight and try to center the rotor the best you can on the caliper.

Hi Sean, thanks for watching. I really think that is the sweet spot for this bike. It feels like a road bike but gives you the option to ride on dirt if you wanted or had some friends who were going on a gravel ride and you wanted to join them. The Contend SL Model has a little more of a road geo with shorter chainstays but the tire clearance is 32c and can maybe clear up to 35c but I haven't had a chance to confirm that yet. So if your gravel roads are very smooth with very little sand, the SL would probably work great but if I were you I would go ahead with the AR if you can.

that weird cable on the fork. Giant, why?
@BlackWaterCyclist4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is actually a regular external hose routing but I like to run my hose behind the fork because it allows the hose to follow along the left shifter housing and I can shrink wrap them together. In my opinion it creates a cleaner looking cable routing instead of the front brake hose crossing in front of the head tube and rubbing the headtube like crazy. Just personal preference on my part, not Giant's cable routing.

Hmmm I know the TCR has more clearance than they have in the past. I believe they are at 32c now. If your gravel is pretty hardpacked then I would say the TCR. Our gravel here can be so many different things from one day to the next, sandy, washed out, choppy. It just depends on the weather so I would lean towards the Contend AR for my area but if you have some nice smooth gravel and will rarely be on it, go with the TCR.

Would it be worth to get this and slowly upgrade it? Or just keep saving for a higher end bike? Edit: Never owned one before
@BlackWaterCyclist4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerrel, that is a tough question because there are so many other variables like what type of riding you want to do, going with another company's bike or what. In the Giant's line up, the next model up is the Giant Defy Advanced but with that bike you get limited tire clearance down to a 35c so if you only plan on riding roads and very smooth gravel, I would save up for the Defy Advanced but if you plan to hit some rougher terrain and still have that road feel, the Contend AR really covers that. You can check out my review of the Giant Revolt Advanced comparison and it really felt sluggish as a road bike but felt more like one of those bikes you ride for like 6 plus hours. Now some other companies have similar features as the Contend AR but cost a lot more, like the 3T exploro where the frameset alone is $3000. So in that situation, get the Contend AR 1, upgrade the wheels and tires and you have a bike that is very competitive against higher end bikes without committing a lot of money towards it. I know I probably just made the waters muddier but I hope that helps.

Have you compared this bike to the 2020 Revolt? Just wanted to know if there are any major differences in the handling and ride of the bikes. Thanks!
@BlackWaterCyclist4 жыл бұрын
Hi Manuel. I actually have not other than riding a Revolt around in the parking lot. Just looking at the Geometry, the Contend AR has a slightly shorter chainstays and a little steeper head tube angle so the Contend will probably have a little more lively feel to it than the Revolt. Based on other reviews, it sounds like the Revolt also has more give to it than other bikes. So I think if all you ride is gravel, go with the revolt, if you ride mostly road but want to also hit gravel occasionally and want a lively bike, go with the contend AR. I hope to get a revolt to review in the next few months. I hope that was helpful.

Hey mate, quick question from Australia. I got a Contend AR 4 and I'd like to take it to some single track MTB routes. I know I can't take it to harsh routes, but what sort of upgrades would you recommend for it?
@BlackWaterCyclist4 жыл бұрын
Hi Douglas, that is great that you got a Contend AR. If I were going to take it on trails, I would put some 650b x 47c tires in it to help absorb impacts from small roots and rocks. Otherwise a 700x38c tire would be more prone to having your rims hit the rocks and roots on hard impacts. You may want to put some sort of protection on the chainstay so the chain doesn't slap the paint off eventually.

Love the video and very interested in the bike! Getting my first road bike and looking for something in the $1.5k-$2k range with an endurance focus for longe rides and some Olympic length triathlons. Pretty much down to this and a Giant defy. My thought is to go with this at the price point and upgrade the wheels to save the 2 pounds at a later date when I have more spending money. Should I just spring for the defy or do you think this would do well in endurance road rides?

Thank you for watching. If I were you, I would go with the Contend AR just because it has very similar Geo to the Defy, You can get some nicer wheels for it, and it will ultimately give you the option to try some gravel if you want to in the future. Nice work! I couldn't decide between a Revolt 0 and this bike until I watched your videos but now I'm convinced that the Contend AR 1 will do great on the road, dirt and gravel mix I ride on, and it's very upgradeable! I had to order one from halfway across the country since they're so hard to find now, but it's on its way to me now and I can't wait. A couple of questions: What are the stock pedals on this bike? I can't seem to find any specific info on Giant's site other than 'Pedal with toe clips/straps'. I emailed the bike shop where I purchased but they're super busy with orders so I haven't heard back. If they're pedals that require shoes with clips, could you suggest some fairly narrow platform pedals?
@BlackWaterCyclist4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kai, So glad that you were able to get one of the Contend AR bikes. As far as the stock pedals, they are just some basic flat plastic pedals that come on all bikes. They aren't clipless or anything. They may come with little cages but I do not recall them coming with my bike. People usually prefer specific pedals so companies do not try to guess what pedal to stock on their bikes. Happy that the videos were helpful for you.
@Breakbeat4 жыл бұрын
@@BlackWaterCyclist Thanks for the info! I can definitely see why they'd let people choose their own pedals - so many options and personal preferences to consider. After being inspired by your review I'm already researching which rims/tires to upgrade to save on weight (and increase suppleness) but coming from an mtb background (my current bike is 30 lbs) I'm sure the stock AR 1 will feel very light, even if it's "heavy" by road bike standards. Any thoughts on the Specialized Pathfinder Pro 2bliss ready 700x38Cs? I'm looking for an all-round tire that can handle some rockier gravel from time to time. Eventually I'll get a second set of wheels for off road but the Pathfinders look like they can handle a wide variety of surfaces. Any advice is appreciated! (:
@BlackWaterCyclist4 жыл бұрын
Kai, I am so sorry for the delay. The Pathfinder tires would be perfect! They have a really good tread pattern for rolling fast and some tread on the sides for turns. My favorite tires are the ones in the video, Continental Speed Rides but they aren't rated for tubeless although I was able to run them tubeless by adding an extra strip of tubeless tape in the rim. I could see those being an issue with rocks although I have never had a flat with them. Have you been able to find some Pathfinders yet?
@Breakbeat4 жыл бұрын
Black Water Cyclist I haven’t bought a set of Pathfinders yet. I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised by how the stock tires handle on rough gravel and even some sand. I really thought they’d just sink into looser stuff or be all over the place in terms of grip but so far they’re great! They aren’t very supple as you mentioned in your video but until I’ve saved up for some extra rims and a set of Pathfinders they’ll do just fine. Thanks for getting back to me - your thoughts are appreciated!

Do you have a link to the 40c tires you used or another recommendation? When I look for them I only see 42c and that might be a bit of a stretch with clearance considering their website only mentions a 38c ability. Also, do you know if the stock wheels can fit 38c-40c tires? I’m not sure how all of that works. One last question, haha. If I wanted wider tires I’d have to get full set of 650b. Would I have to adjust anything to use them or can they just be swapped out used without a hefty amount of adjustments?
@BlackWaterCyclist4 жыл бұрын
Hi Tyler, here is a link to the Continental Speed Rides I use. amzn.to/2TsBydN They actually measure narrower than 42c. Mine measured 41c set up tubeless. As a heads up, they are not tubeless so I just ran an extra layer of tubeless rim tape on my rim for them to work. The site says 38c but it can clear 41c or even 42c easily. Yes the stock wheels should fit those sizes with no issues at all. You really just need to but another set of 650b wheels and tires. If the hubs are a little different from your other hubs, you may have a little rotor rub so may need to adjust your brakes after installing the 650b wheels. Also the cassette may not line up just like your other cassette on the other hub so you may need a slight barrel adjustment on your rear derailleur. Both of those are worse case scenarios, most of the time you can just throw on the other wheels with no adjustments. Hope that helps.
