Why did you not use the same technique on tomb stone painting as this one. Just curious you added protectant to this one and not tomb stones. TIA
@IsaacAlexanderDIY3 жыл бұрын
@@leginagonzales4264 The reason I added foam coat to the pumpkin is to make the pumpkin stronger and have a hard coat on it. It’s not for protective measures from the elements. The gravestones are already hard because insulation foam board is a solid piece. You could add the foam coat to the grave stones but it would be money wasted since the Dryloc paint gives it the texture that is needed for the gravestones.

You can do all the shaping using the hot wire, including making the ribs (makes much less mess). You should only need to use the horse brush for the final surface. Then hit it with a heat gun or propane torch to eliminate the fuzzy balls. Then paint with “oops” returned paint, dark color (then light color). As soon as you paint use bedsheet or other cloth and cover entire pumpkin and paint over as you go. It gives it a strong skin. You can then sprinkle it with mortar mix while the paint is still wet (will creat a stronger skin) let dry and they paint with lighter or darker paint (to ensure proper coverage) then add coats of paint until you can no longer see the material) finally paint the last coats with the desired color.

For the hard coat, you can also use “monster mud” which is just a mixture of exterior paint and drywall joint compound in a ratio/mix of 5 parts joint compound to 1 part exterior paint. May be a little cheaper/quicker than the Foam Factory option. This will also help fill in smaller holes and give you a smoother finish if you couldn’t get it all sanded the way you wanted. Great video!
@IsaacAlexanderDIY3 жыл бұрын
For any future projects I will not be using monster mud as I have not had much success with it. We have wet Octobers and the various items that I have monster mud coated have ended up wilting, melting or becoming soft. I have followed a couple of different recipes - including the 5 to 1 ratio and still get same results. It’s perfect when it’s sunny or dry but once it rains it becomes soft. Not sure why I never had success with it
@fussguss30113 жыл бұрын
@@IsaacAlexanderDIY If you have a wetter season I definitely understand why monster mud isn’t your first choice. Maybe a different ratio would help it stand up a little better. Hollywood Haunter does a resin/gel hard coat on their outdoor props these days, but I’ve never used either of those since it’s just a hobby for me.
