@@junejuniejune stop with the strawman you disingenuous pos. I am ONLY talking about trimming/cutting claws. Stop bringing up declawing, its not whats being discussed. Trimming is not 'maintenance' for a cat, if you had any idea about a cats anatomy you would know that their claws do not grow outwardly from the tip so even if they weren't allowed enough exercise their claws wouldn't overgrow like some animals. A cats claws split down the centre and old layers break off from each side. The only reason people trim cats claws is for the owners sake and isnt necessary. Cats look after their own claws by simply climbing and scratching on trees and self grooming. No organisation setup for the welfare of animals would recommend trimming, anyone can quote misinformation from unreliable sources like you have.

For anyone curious, cutting a cat's nails is not only safe, for indoor cars it can be a necessity. Their nails can grow into their paw pads, and older cats are not good at removing the dead parts of their nails, which can lead to infection. Declawing, on the other hand, is a permanently disfiguring procedure where the first joint of each digit of the paw is completely removed. It's the equivalent of having each of your fingers cut off beyond the first knuckle. Declawing can lead to early onset arthritis in cats and make them more aggressive because their main defense tactic has been taken away. Please cut your cat's nails, but don't declaw!
@h.s.62693 жыл бұрын
Another thing on why clipping nails is necessary. With the way the nails grow if the cats don't actively scratch to wear them down and you don't trim them, they can snag and rip off very painfully. But if you are new to trimming research how to do it properly so you don't hurt them by cutting too much and making them bleed! Also totally 2nd that about NOT declawing your cat! My family did it to all our cats while I was growing up because they didn't know better and the internet wasn't really prevalent. When we got it done to our black male, he had an absolutely horrible time healing and has never had confidence the same way again. We took his main means of defense away from him and he felt vulnerable ever sense.

@marywagner71203 жыл бұрын
@@s_spiritstar yes, that is correct. There's a nerve and blood rich structure called the "quick" in both dog and cat's nails. If you cut that, it will bleed and hurt. However, in cats especially, it's very easy to see if you look at the nail from the side. It looks like a pink copy of the shape of their nail. As long as you don't cut that, you're good.

I own a half Maine Coon... as for the "as close to a dog as you can get in cat form" thats terrifyingly true... he is more of a dog than my Husky lab mix is. he is 20lbs (not overweight) and refuses to play at all ever unless I throw a tiny ball he can go retrieve for me... ... seriously. He is the most cuddlie cat I have ever owned, seen, or even heard of, as if he could he would sit in my lap and never, ever, leave... he cuddles with me all night usually near my feet (a dangerous place in my case) but sometimes he takes the easy route and comes up and cuddles in my armpit while my arm is extended holding my head at the perfect level... this usually wakes me up at some point as I choke on that signature long coat you see here... He is the single best cat I have ever owned, he is 9 and I am glad cats are long lived because it gives me time to figure out what I will do when he goes as I do not know if I have ever been so emotionally attached and entangled with anyone in my entire life (including my parents and siblings yes.)

My elderly Maine Coon cat has a rug on the kitchen floor. He sits there daily in expectation of being combed. It is part of the daily ritual after breakfast. He has always had too much fur to take care of it himself, and now, that he is close to 15, I think he relies on me for most of his grooming. As the groomer said, they do mat under the arms and on the belly and this can happen pretty quickly. His brother, who is no longer with us, had belly fur that I can only compare to sheep wool with a laye of longer strands of silky fur over top. It was really odd and matted super easily. He was the most gorgeous cat I had ever seen and he may have been stolen.

Some owners are like a lot of parents these days - their little darling is never to be criticized and is always wonderful. They are offended to be told otherwise. That said, unless I would wind up in the ER from an attack, I admit, I lie like a rug to the owner if their dog is a pill or nailed me. That is because I once worked in a shop where someone's dog nipped the owner of the shop. No big deal but on pick up the shop owner did casually mention the nip. She wasn't upset about it, dogs will be dogs, a little H2O2 and a bandaid and she was fine. Happens all the time. The owner didn't comment about the nipping, paid for the groom, loaded the dog in the car, took the dog to the vet and put the dog down. We were told about it after the fact and were horrified. The owner told us he absolutely would not keep a dog that bit a human for any reason. Any dog that did so, end of the trail for that pooch. After that, I have never admitted to any owner their dog nipped me.

I had two Maine Coon mixes and this is exactly how I described them. Best personality ever!

Yeah I had a MC that was definitely a demon. He never got matting tho, so that's a blessing.

imo from the domestic breeds the Siamese and orientals generally have greatest d-g like behaviour and attachments to human owners.

maine coon cats arent considered full grown till at least three years, but they dont generally fully fill out until their fourth or fifth year. this little fella has a lot of growing and filling out to do.
@Sadoodi2 жыл бұрын
He still has 2 or 3 years of growing to do! Maine coons are fully grown between 3 to 4 years old
@wuestenfucks91732 жыл бұрын
the one year old main coon is a young cat. Main coons get full maturity at 4 years old. that cat has 3 more years to grow. Main coon cats grow very slowly.

He’s still got a lot of growing to do. They reach full size within 4 years of being born, much longer than a dog. Yeah, they get THAT big, and yet the breed is still healthy.

Can you blame him? I mean I don't like getting my hair cut how would it feel for an animal who isn't used to it?
