The de Havilland DH.88 Comet is a British two-seat, twin-engined aircraft built by the de Havilland Aircraft Company. It was developed specifically to participate in the 1934 England-Australia MacRobertson Air Race from the United Kingdom to Australia.
Development of the DH.88 Comet was initiated at the behest of British aviation pioneer Geoffrey de Havilland, along with the support of de Havilland's board, being keen to garner prestige from producing the victorious aircraft as well as to gain from the research involved in producing it. The Comet was designed by A. E. Hagg around the specific requirements of the race; Hagg produced an innovative design in the form of a stressed-skin cantilever monoplane, complete with an enclosed cockpit, retractable undercarriage, landing flaps, and variable-pitch propellers.
Three Comets were produced for the race, all for private owners at the discounted price of £5,000 per aircraft. The aircraft underwent a rapid development cycle, performing its maiden flight only six weeks prior to the race. Comet G-ACSS Grosvenor House emerged as the winner. Two further examples were later built. The Comet went on to establish a multitude of aviation records, both during the race and in its aftermath, as well as participating in further races. Several examples were bought and evaluated by national governments, typically as mail planes. Two Comets, G-ACSS and G-ACSP, survived into preservation, while a number of full-scale replicas have also been constructed.
Filmed by Dom Mitchell at the BMFA Power Nationals 'Show Line' for the 'Essential RC' KZbin channel using the Panasonic AG-UX180 Pro 4K camcorder.

one of the most famous and iconic British planes of the 30s. If, as I read in the posts below, it is the same model that was built 20 years ago I would say that the materials are excellent. By heart the original propellers were larger but even those were two-bladed, so here too, a well-rounded historicity! Thanks Dom for sharing this video. See you in the next shootings. Cheers!

@@EssentialRC I was not commenting on the fact that it is underpowered, only the fact that the props make it look goofy as they are so small for the plain that it looks ridiculous! I have and always will feel that part of making a scale replica includes proper power plant to support the proper sized Prop! Putting ridiculously undersized Props on a replica detracts from the overall look of a plane that it to me is unacceptable especially if the event is juried on accuracy of the replica, and even still it just masivally detracts from the overall look. And the insurance they have to carry in case they mame some kids or something. What happens during a mechanical or stuctural failure of this "large" model airplane flying such close proximity to spectators? The F.A.A. would never allow this to happen, so why is this size model allowed? Tis a catastrophe waiting to happen.
@EssentialRC

@@EssentialRC Utterly clueless? I voiced a legitimate concern. Just because a "model" is built under strict safety guidelines and the model aircraft is reviewed during construction is NO guarantee it won't fail at some part/point. If your position were 100% foolproof - then, NO RC would crash/fall apart or run in to something - not to mention its very physical flight performance is dictated by radio wave - which has a failure rate also. Instead of mocking my concern - perhaps you ought to address it with compassion and scholarly concern. FYI. Just ask the engineers responsible for the 737 MAX.
@EssentialRC
@EssentialRC 4 жыл бұрын
You didn't state a concern. You are scare mongering. "Tis a catastrophe waiting to happen." Large RC model models have been around a long time. The technology involved improves all the time, the safety measures are review/improved regularly and in this case the model aircraft was built by a very experienced engineer. Your logic applies to any vehicle operating anywhere not just RC planes. If you are that worried best you stay inside and don't go out the front door. Yes, you are clueless regarding this unless you ACTUALLY are familiar with what is involved with a project like this. There are plenty of RC aircraft in the US that are this size or larger. Just use google buddy.
