Giant Smallies in Oklahoma??

Some places are just too good to pass up, even if you only have a few hours to fish, and its cold and rainy. The day after the Kayak Bassmaster Championship, the @thecreekcrawler and I decided to get out on the Illinois River with our @OldTownCanoeKayak peddle drives and go downstream about a mile than work our way back up. The effort was well worth it!!

That's awesome you and Brian finally hooked up. I was hoping it would happen. I live in S.E. Ohio on the Muskingum River and have fished many of the places Brian has but with far less results but always fun. That spot in Tahlequa is awesome, you lucked out John in the summer I wouldn’t be anywhere near that section. I grew up on the upper section of the Illinois just across the Arkansas border. The big smallies are up in that area and is way less fished. Good video bud!

@thecreekcrawler I've been telling John about it for a couple of years. Was good to see you guys finally fish it. There is another creek up there that has excellent wade fishing. Might not catch that size of smallies but you can catch 30 to 40 in a few hours. Any time you want to hang out and fish up there, just hollar.

That stretch you did is one of my favorites when I’ve only got a couple hours to fish. That fast current where the power lines run usually hold a good-sized smallie. Next time your in the area you should try and float the section after the Nohead hollow public access area. We were getting bit everywhere there was a combination of cover, current (but not too fast), and deeper water.

If you are ever in the area again hit up Baron fork creek. There is a public spot right off the bridge on welling road. It's an even clearer creek that runs into the Illinois right before tenkiller lake. about 20-30 minutes from where you guys are at. They always seem to be biting there!
