Great fish! Next time please dont grab them by the gills
@JasonMitchellOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
We grip the gill plate and our hands don’t actually touch their gills. For immobilizing a big thrashing fish like a big pike, sturgeon or musky, I believe you do a disservice to the fish if you think you can control them by bear hugging them. Grip the gill plate firmly, hold the fish horizontal and get it back in the water. Thanks for watching!
@riverfreakfishing38864 жыл бұрын
Yes and thank you for that👍 but with the bigger fish especially its still possible to rip the gill plate and would be in the best interest of the fish to not do anything that could harm it. Thank you!

I think the best way is to just to put the net into the bottom of the boat with the fish in it. Then grab them by the belly + tail, take your picture, then put them back into the net and use the net to release them. Putting a finger in the wrong spot could kill these old dinosaurs, too risky.

Actually River Freak is 100% correct. Sturgeon gills are not like other fish, they're super delicate. Never gill hold a sturgeon unless you intend to keep it. Tail and belly grab next time. Great segment though.

Hey Jason, Was it crowded at the boat landing that you launched from on this day? And if the fishing pressure was relatively light, was it because others were more focused on the Walleye fishing in the Rainy River? Fantastic Show!!
@JasonMitchellOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
+Todd Center the ramps can get crowded during the walleye season but this was filmed last week and there was no more than three rigs.
