Container turnover was growing by about 15% every year until 2008. The industry was booming. The first container ship was able to carry just 700 standard containers (TEU). Giants with a carrying capacity of 8,450 TEU are currently being built and an 18,000 TEU ship has already been designed as part of a Dutch study. How big will the container giants of the future be?

We show the construction of one of the largest container ships in Japan, take part at the first test voyage in the Japanese Sea and look over the shoulder of the shipbuilders. We show how the technicians crawl through the 93,000 hp diesel and how they control the paint coats under the colossus in the dry dock.
Which technical problems arise during the construction of ever larger ships and what changes are there for the crew? Can the giants of the future continue to reach German ports with their draught? Will the ports master the logistical challenges?
All recordings were made exclusively by fact+film after difficult negotiations about the filming permits. Locations were Hamburg, Germany and Kure, Japan.

I would hate to do an oil change on a ship like that. Go to Auto Zone, "I need 243,000 quarts of oil, 60,000 drain pans, 900 rolls of paper towels, a Snickers Bar and this cute little key chain". lol

Ports should charge much more for the oversized dinosaur ships like these to recover the costs that they impose on the ports with the specialized oversized equipment, oversized docks, dredging of deeper channels, etc etc.

Amazing what happens in 17 years... 13,000 TEU was a dream on a drawing board. 18,000? Ha! Who's gonna make the running gear to safely and efficiently power those vessels? Will the ports load and discharge all of those boxes from a single ship? Is the drayage adequate? Questions answered - the engineers were more than up to the task, as were the port owners/operators. The future is here - Gulsun class, nearly 24,000 TEU...

What services do they get while passing through shipping channels like Panama etc? What fees do the pay to use certain paste ways?is it calculated as a whole of the cargo, weight size?

Was watching a KZbin a few months ago. A very large ship had to go thru the Panama Canal. The toll for the ship was $1 million. Since the canal saves so much time and fuel savings , it's worth it to the shippers. They just bill the shipping companies bc they know they will pay up.

Emma Maersk at the time she came into service was declared as 11550 TEU capacity. Later they increased the figures up to 15000+ TEU. But she never been 18000 TEU. First ships of this capacity were Triple-E of Maersk in 2013 and later on.

Everything is temporary. Technology makes it possible to grow bigger, better and faster - hence cheaper. Today in 2021 the biggest ship is 24,000 TEU and 400 mtrs long . But whether that is good for the environment is debatable. Looking forward to the renewable energy sailing vessel.
