Gibson J45 vs Martin D35 - Acoustic Shootout!!!

This is an acoustic guitar shootout between two classic guitars. A Gibson J45 Standard versus a Martin D35. The Gibson was built in 2020 and the Martin in 1988. Both have fresh strings. 12-53 gauge. Elixir 82/20 Bronze on the Martin and D'Addario XS Phosphor Bronze on the Gibson.

Nice comparison. I like the Martin . Alive sounding to my ear. Then again, I have three D-35s, and one is reimagined. One vintage and the other 2010. The 2010, however, blows the others out. The J4-5 is nice, and I almost bought one. Then I played an Martin SPD-16 KOA, and that ended that purchase.

I was going to buy a J45 but I bought a Gibson Songwriter instead because I liked the sound better.I still want a J45 though!

As others have commented both sound great, but as I own and bought new in 1986 a D35 I have to go with it. The biggest tonal difference is caused by the Martin having rosewood back and sides, whereas the J35 has mahogany. Rosewood is brighter sounding, whereas mahogany is warmer sounding.

my D35 is a 1988 so ours are very close to each other in terms of the build.

I see you are fortunate like me. I also have both these guitars. I play the d-35 plugged more because I like lr baggs anthem pickup I had installed. My j-45 is a 2020 model with the vtc pickup in it and it sucks but acoustic I love j-45. They are both great.

My D35 is from 1988 and does not have electronics in it. I plan to keep it that way. As for the Gibson J45 and the LR Baggs VTC, I actually think it sounds pretty good. Regardless, they are called "acoustic" for a reason. I have never heard a pick up of any kind on an acoustic guitar that can match the depth and breath of a quality acoustic guitar and natural audio. Enjoy both of yours!!! We are both luck to have them!!!!

J-45 seams to be a little bit brighter with more mid range. I own the 45 and wouldn't change.

I'd be happy owning either one. I happen to have a D-35, so I don't need the Gibson. But, I certainly wouldn't turn it down. Mahogany has a beautiful sound, until you hear rosewood. Each has its place, one can't take the place of the other. Some of the best sounding guitars are made of one or the other. Go figure.

D35's are awesome. The build quality is exceptional and the warmth provided by the three piece back is just outstanding. Enjoy your instrument!!!!

Tough call. I like the J-45 a little better. A better comparison would be the Gibson hummingbird vs. your D35. But I totally understand why you’d own these two and not a hummingbird.

hummingbirds are super expensive. I have always been intrigued by them and the J200 too. But you can only have so many acoustic guitars, or not!

My D35 is about 35 years old. For three and a half decades it has either been on my lap or in its case. It has a sweet, rich sound!!!!
